Ihite community rejects newly elected traditional ruler, petitions Soludo to cancel election

    By Ovat Abeng

Crisis is gradually brewing in Ihite Community of Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State, following a disagreement over selection of a traditional ruler.

Already, some members of the community led by the community’s traditional council have disowned a new king, Mr Timothy Ifurunwa, who was last weekend elected by a section of the community, under the prompting of the President General, Mr George Madu.

The community is currently polarized into factions, with many members of the community rejecting the process that led to the selection of Ifurunwa as king.

The community’s traditional council has petitioned Anambra State governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo, urging him to intervene to avert crisis in the community and to also disregard the process that led to the selection of Ifurunwa.

In the petition signed by their lawyer, Barr N.I Onyeakpa, Chiefs Ahamkonye, Daniel Ifemkpa, Anudu Ephraim and Geoffrey Okeke, all members of the traditional council accused the president general of the community, George Madu of jettisoning the constitution of the community in the selection, just to favour his candidate.

Onyeakpa in the petition told Soludo that: “Ihite town in Orumba South Local Government Area of Anambra State lost their Traditional Ruler Igwe, B.O. Ofu in 2020.

“Under Ihite native law and custom, after two (2) years of transition to glory by the Royal father, there shall be a joint meeting of the Ihite traditional council and the town union wherein the two important bodies in the town will discuss on how a new king or traditional ruler of the town should be elected.”

Onyeakpa said the president general, Madu did not following the guidelines of the constitution in the process. He urged Soludo not to issue a certificate of recognition to the newly elected monarch, Ifurunwa.

He said it was a surprise to the community that Madu could continue with a selection process, even when his authority to singlehandedly select a monarch and sidelining the traditional council of the community was still being determined by the court.

He said: “Our clients filed Suits in both customary court and Magistrate court challenging the purported dissolution of Ihite traditional council by the President General, and illegal process of selection, nomination and screening of a would be traditional ruler of Ihite without reference to the traditional council of Ihite.”

Two members of the traditional council who spoke with journalists; Chief Geoffrey Okeke and Onowu Dominic Ahamkonye called on Prof Soludo to a null the process, and not to be deceived into issuing certificate of return to the new monarch.

Meanwhile, in his reaction, the president general of the community, Mr George Madu who spoke to journalists insisted that the process was right. He said there were only few disgruntled people in the community who were unhappy, insisting that the process was transparent.

  • Anambra lawmaker knocks Soludo over lack of efforts to resolve oil-rich Ogwuaniocha violent crisis

Anambra lawmaker knocks Soludo over lack of efforts to resolve oil-rich Ogwuaniocha violent crisis

    By Ovat Abeng

Member representing Ogbaru Federal Constituency, Anambra state, in the House of Representatives, Hon. Afam Victor Ogene, has called on the State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo to make deliberate efforts to end the communal conflict in Ogwuaniocha community which led to the abduction of the traditional ruler, who is yet to be accounted for since 2021.

He appealed to the state government to set up a panel of inquiry to address the violent conflict and bring an end to the years of lawlessness, fear, reprisal killings and criminality in the community, adding that since 2021, there has been no progressive social or economic activities in the community as a result of the intractable crisis.

Ogene made this call in a trending video yesterday, where he lamented that the Anambra state government, since the last administration of Chief Willie Obiano, had treated the crisis in the oil rich community with veiled disdain, in spite of the fact that the community produces mass of the oil revenue that the state is currently enjoying as an oil producing state.

The lawmaker, who is the Chairman of House Committee on Renewable Energy, also, in the video, disclosed that he had earlier in February, written to the state governor, drawing his attention to the lingering crisis which has led to the sacking of the over 5,000 residents of the community from both their homes and farmlands, by criminal gangs who have now taken over Ogwuaniocha and its environs, leading to untold hardship and increased criminality in the local government area.

Hon. Ogene’s earlier letter to Governor Soludo, which he said the governor didn’t respond to was entitled: “Urgent need for government intervention in the lingering crisis in Ogwuaniocha community in Ogbaru LGA: A request for panel of inquiry.”

The letter read in part: “I write to draw the attention of Your Excellency and the state government to the lingering violent crisis in Ogwuaniocha, in Ogbaru Federal Constituency, Anambra state, which has unfortunately led to the sacking of the entire community from both their residences and farmlands, as a result of the activities of criminal gangs who have taken over the community.

“Note, Your Excellency, that Ogwuaniocha is an oil bearing community, (contributing over 20,000 barrels of crude oil per day), which earned the state its oil producing status, and thus, deserves to be protected from the devices of agents of destruction, essentially, as the security of lives and property is the primary purpose of government.

“It is troubling to recall that violent gangs have overtime, set up camps in and around Ogwuaniocha Community, sacked the residents, kidnapped the traditional ruler (Igwe Oliver Nnaji) – who is yet to be accounted for – killed and maimed many others, (mostly unchallenged), in brazen desecration of the traditional institution and erosion of our cultural values. And this should alarm both the people and government of Anambra state.

“It is, however, worrisome that while oil production goes on seamlessly in Ogwuaniocha, the people have been forced to stay off their community for two years now – since Monday, November 15, 2021 – with no farming activity, no school for the children, no business activities in the community, on account of the occupation of the community by the criminal gangs.

“It is pertinent to note that till date people in Ogwuaniocha remain in dire need of urgent government intervention, in finding a workable resolution of the crises, and also, as regards provision of relief materials and protection of their land and lives. Sadly, this expectation has remained a mirage, as the immediate past administration in the state allowed the crises to fester, without any meaningful step towards restoring normalcy to the beleaguered community.

“Just recently, there was a fresh resurgence of violence in the community and its environs, leading to abduction of several people who are reportedly yet to be accounted for, a trend that has kept recurring since November, 2021.”

The Reps member who is also Secretary, Southern Caucus, 10th House of Representatives,  further requested:

“That the state government set up, urgently, a Panel of Inquiry that would holistically address both the security and sociological dimensions of the crisis.

“Compel the security agencies to comb the Ogwuaniocha forest and environs, smoke out the criminal gangs and restore order in the community to enable the residents to return to their abandoned homes and farmlands.

“Provide urgent relief materials for the community, in order to alleviate the sufferings of the people who are living in fear, under inhuman conditions.”

The Muslim leaders led by Alhaji Sani Ejoh who is the Vice President-General of Jama’atu Nasril Islam Anambra branch were hosted by the Governor at the Governor’s Lodge, Amawbia

After jointly breaking fast with the Governor, the leader of the goup, Alhaji Sani Ejoh thanked the Governor for hosting them at the Lodge and for joining them in breaking the fast

Alhaji Ejoh informed Governor Soludo that the primary aim of the Jama’atu Nastril Islam of Nigeria as body is to safeguard and protect the interest of all Muslims in Nigeria.

He congratulated the Governor on behalf of the Muslim Ulma in Anambra for  his second term anniversary in office, specifically commending him for his sterling performances as could be seen from the visible projects and infrastructural development he has put in place across the State

Responding, Governor Soludo commended the group for their exemplary conduct as well as congratulated the Muslim community for the successful fasting period

The Governor reminded his visitors that the period of the holy month of fasting calls for purification of minds and also serve as a moment of re-awaking to all Muslim faithfuls. This period, he added, should usher in peace and joy in the land.

The Governor ended his speech by reminding his visitors that Anambra remains a home irrespective of one’s religious beliefs or inclinations

Interestingly, as a Governor and leader, Prof Soludo has consistently shown an unwavering disposition of non-discrimination based on religion or tribe of anyone  resident in Anambra State

And quite remarkably, this disposition has earned him an award as the “Father of Ecumenism” in Anambra State owing strictly to his stern beliefs in Ecumenism which he has consistently practiced and demonstrated to all Christian denominations in the State

His other non-discriminatory attitude in leadership was also recently seen when he appointed a non-indigene from Osun State as a Permanent Secretary in Anambra civil service aside other several previous appointments given to non-indigenes in the State.

The Deputy National Director of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association (MACBAN), Allahaji Gidado Siddikki also participated in the breakfast ceremony.

Our roads are still intact, very solid, Anambra residents reply Soludo’s critics

    By Ovat Abeng

Residents of Anambra State, on Thursday, held protests in various parts of the state against politicians and other individuals spreading false narratives about the roads constructed by Governor Chukwuma Soludo.

They said that the “ill-conceived stories” trending on social media that the roads constructed by the governor had failed were not true and should be thrown into the trash bin where they belong.

In Awka North, residents of the Local Government Area trooped out in their numbers on the 26km Amansea – Ebenebe – Ugbenu – Ugbene – Awba Ofemmili Road to tell the world that the very long stretch of road constructed by Soludo was still intact and very solid.

The people carried placards with various inscriptions such as ‘Ndi asili 2025 keep off, Solution is here to stay’, ‘Amansea to Awba Ofemmili Road is solid’, ‘Qaulity road, quality governor’, ‘Roads constructed in Awka North LGA are 100% perfect’, ‘Awka North is for solution governor 100%’ among others.

A community leader in Ugbenu, Hon. James Onwuka, made it very clear that he used the road everyday and that he had not seen any portion that failed.

“This road you’re seeing is 100 per cent perfect. In fact, this road is of European standard. In Anambra State we have not seen this kind of road before.

“The other time, somebody visited this area from Ebonyi State and he confessed that this road constructed by Soludo is of higher standard than the ones they have in Ebonyi State.

“We’re saying that based on what Governor Soludo has done for us, we are supporting him 100 per cent. And in the next year’s elections, we’ll give him our votes”, Onwuka declared.

Another community leader from Urum, Chief Amaechi Obiesili, said that he found the statement credited to some politicians that the road in Awka North had started collapsing as puerile and very laughable.

“We are standing on the 26km Amansea – Ebenebe – Ugbenu – Ugbene – Awba Ofemmili Road as you can see. Which part of it has collapsed?

“Can the political opponents of Soludo who’re spreading these false narratives step forward and show us which portion of the road had gone bad? They’re just lying against the good works of Mr Governor and it is not good”, he said.

Obiesili, popularly known as Chiefoo, commended Soludo for his good works and urged him not to relent in his efforts to develop the state for the good of the people.

In Awka, the state capital, commercial tricycle operators popularly known as Keke NAPEP, held a solidarity walk in support of the administration of Governor Soludo.

The Keke riders said that they no longer frequented mechanics workshop as before ever since Governor Soludo reconstructed the roads in Awka and its environs.

Coordinator of Anambra Keke Drivers Forum (AKDF), Comrade Osita Obi, while addressing newsmen on the newly tarred road near Prof. Kenneth Dike Library, said that commercial tricycle operators in the state were happy with Soludo’s road work.

“We were here when this road was under construction. This is one of the wonders of Governor Chukwuma Soludo. From here to Roban Store road through the back of the CBN to Club Road down to Ngozika Housing Estate, Soludo is working.

“So, we are here to see where our taxes are going. And we can see that Soludo is using them well. We can see the results.

“Again, there is a trending video about what happened in Ochanja area of Onitsha where a small portion of the road which is still under construction had small issue after the it had rained.

“The road was still under construction and it’s not fair to criticize the governor or the contractor on that incident because they had no control over the rain or the weather generally”, Obi stated.
