Cross River Government Says State Fully Prepared For APC National Chairman’s Cup

    …Promises To Make Tournament Colourful

As the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman’s Cup makes headway, Cross River Government says the state is fully prepared for the football tournament that is billed to take place in April 2024, across the nation.

The Commissioner for Sports Development, Hon. Agnes Atsu, stated this on Thursday when she received members of the National Organizing Committee for the APC National Chairman’s Cup in her office in Calabar.

Hon. Atsu while welcoming the committee members, expressed the state’s readiness to host the football competition for the South South zone, adding that Cross River would go as far as making the tournament to be more colourful so as to attract the spotlight.

She expressed confidence in the capacity of the Special Adviser to the Governor on Sports Development, who is the co-chairman of the local organizing committee, to deliver a spectacular tournament.

She then told the delegation that the sports loving governor, Senator Prince Bassey Otu “is fully ready to host more and more of this kind of tournament in Cross River because he is a sports friendly governor who has been giving us all the support, and has told us as a ministry to go out there and open Cross River State’s doors onto the sporting world.”

The Commissioner, however, informed that the football tournament is open “to all Cross Riverians to participate. It’s not meant for APC members alone. It is for all Nigerians to be part of irrespective of political leanings. We are calling on all Cross Riverians to come and support the tournament. We are mobilizing everybody to come and be a part of it.

“Bring your football teams to come and participate. We don’t want this trophy that came here today to go away from Cross River to another state. We want to keep it. We are calling on our best footballers in the state to come out and express themselves.”

Also speaking, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Sports Development, Mr Ekanem Ekpenyong, who also doubles as co-chairman of the local organizing committee, assured the delegation that the state would do everything possible to have a hitch-free tournament that would be worthy of commendation.

On his part, leader of the delegation, Amb. Moses Ebahor, said as a father to all Nigerians and lover of sports, the APC National Chairman, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, felt the need to empower Nigerian youths through sports.

Ebahor, who is the National Coordinator of the APC National Chairman’s Cup and President of Miss Football Nigeria, stated that Calabar was chosen for the flag off and center for the South South zone because, according to him, “Calabar is the home of tourism. It’s the home of football. When the Super Eagles played their qualifying matches here they always won. To us, bringing the opening ceremony to Cross River State and also playing the South south zonal elimination is not out of place.”

He disclosed that in the zonal elimination, 16 teams are expected to play the tournament from any club or football academy, adding that the two teams that would qualify from the South south zone would go ahead to compete in the national final in Abuja. The opening ceremony for the tournament, according to the team lead, is expected to take place on the 22nd of April, 2024 in Calabar.

Shortly after the meeting with the Honourable Commissioner and the SA on Sports Development, the delegation was then led to pay a courtesy visit on the state chairman of the APC, Barr. Alphonsus Eba, who pledged the support of the state chapter of the party towards the success of the tournament.

Highlight of the visit was the presentation of the APC National Chairman’s trophy and a pair of sports wear to the state chairman by the leader of the delegation.

  • Group calls for resignation of C’River APC Chairman over embezzlement of funds

Group calls for resignation of C’River APC Chairman over embezzlement of funds

…Party insists no fund is missing

The Northern Cross River Reconciliation Movement has called on the state chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Cross River, Barr. Alphonsus Eba, to immediately resign from office over allegation of financial impropriety.

The group in a statement signed by its chairman, Bernard Ingio, stated that “At the wake of 2023 General Elections, All Progressives Congress, APC, aspirants made bountiful donations to the party. These donations are outside the huge sums given to the party, by Senator Professor Ben Ayade, then governor of the state for the prosecution of the 2023 Elections.

“These monies were handed over to Alphonsus Eba, the State Party Chairman who pocketed every kobo of that money and a year after the election he has not given an account of the money or even an evaluation of the outcome of the election where the party lost woefully in the northern district where he hails from.

“A run down of few of the donations made by aspirants include:

Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong – 25 million naira

Chief Chris Agara – 20 million naira

Senator John Owan Eno – 10 million naira

Hon Okon Awuna – 10 million naira

Engineer Ekpenyong Nsa – 10 million naira

Hon Legor Idagbor – 10 million naira

Hon Joseph Bassey – 5 million naira

Hon Victor Abang – 5 million naira

These sums amount to 90 million naira.

“There were a deluge of other donations from virtually all aspirants seeking tickets on the platform of the APC across the state in the range of 4 million, 3 million, 2 million, 1 million and 500 thousand naira. All these monies amounted to over two hundred million which were handed over to Eba. The veritable question is, where are all these monies and who has he given account of the money to?

“This same APC Chairman collected a whopping 50 million naira for his official car and as I write this, Eba has pocketed the money meant for the official cars of other State Executive Council members. Many of them walk or take public transport to the office which is quite embarrassing for Exco officials of the ruling Party.

“This odious state of affairs makes the Party stinks and it breeds dissatisfaction, despondency and rebellion by the officials and members.

“It is clear that Eba is ruining our Party before our very eyes because of avarice, rapacious personal aggrandisement and should therefore be brought to book immediately.

“We in Northern Cross River Reconciliation Movement insist that Eba should immediately account for these huge sums of money in his possession and tender an APOLOGY to stakeholders and members for destroying our great party and then RESIGN.

“We call on stakeholders to demand the immediate RESIGNATION of Mr Alphonsus Eba or be forced out before he inflicts incalculable damage on the fortune of our dear party.”

Reacting to the allegation, the state chapter of the Party in a release signed by the Acting Publicity Secretary, Hon. Emmanuel Edem Inyang JP, said that the chairman did not embezzle any fund as no money of the Party was missing.

According to him, “The question is, can the state chairman unilaterally in an Exco of 38 members collect almost 200 million as alleged and squander same without any outcry from the Exco?

“Interestingly however, the State Executive Committee has spent in excess of 200 million to carter for official car support to over 21 Exco members / the welfare of Executive and non Executive members.

“The State Working Committee is responsible for the day to day administration of the party, therefore every fund authorized by the state Chairman is appropriated, approved and ratified by the State Executive Committee in tandem with the provisions of the party’s constitution.”

APC group demands chairmanship of Calabar Municipal Council

    By Our Reporter

An assemblage known as the All Progressive Congress, (APC) Legacy Group, Calabar Municipality Chapter has demanded that it be given the right to produce the next chairman of Calabar Municipal Council.

The group made the demand on Thursday in Calabar when it paid a courtesy visit to Chief Felix Idem, leader of the party in Calabar Municipal Council to congratulate him on his new position in the party.

It would be recalled that Idem was affirmed leader of the party at the council level during a meeting by members of the party on Sunday Jan. 7, 2024.

Speaking on behalf of the group Comrade Iso Edim said the APC Legacy Group was a assemblage of members of the original parties that formed the APC.

Edim noted that these were the members that had been loyal to the party through thick and thin over the years until some new members defected to the party in the state in 2021 and highjacked the party structure.

He said while they supported them so as not to cause division in the party in the state, all they ask for is the opportunity to produce the next chairman of Calabar Municipality.

According to him, “the next chairman of Calabar Municipality should come from constituency 1 that is to say from Ward 1 to Ward 5 of Calabar Municipality.

“Also, the next chairman should be a real Qua son as the House of Assembly Member, Hon. Stanley Nsemo is a non-Qua, so as to strike a balance as it has always been,” he said.

He noted that while that was all they were asking for as a group, never again would they allow leaders who were square pegs in round holes.

Responding Idem thanked them for the visit and for affirming him the leader of the party in the council

He also used the opportunity to call on other members of the party to come join hands with them to grow the party in the council.

He said APC has come to stay and that anybody that thinks he can wrestle power from the party both at the national and state level was making a mistake.

He called on the members of the group to put the council together because they were a people of integrity and truth adding that gone were the days when they believed in thuggery.

He added that Calabar is a peaceful City and if they were united it would give the governor more room to carry out plans and programs that would develop Calabar Municipality as they all want.

Anambra 2025: Stop frustrating our effort in taking over power – APC warns Ngige

    By Ovat Abeng

Anambra State Chapter of the All Progressive Congress (APC), has warned the former Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige to stop frustrating the Party’s effort in taking over power from the State ruling-All Progressive Grand Alliance APGA come 2025 governorship election in the state.

The party accused the Minister of been self-centered in the affairs of the party in the state

The Paradise News gathered that Ngige, while speaking to Journalists at his country home in Alor, Idemili South Local Government Area of the State, recently, said that there are two factions of the party in the state but maintained that the situation would not be a problem when the next governorship election comes up in 2025.

He said: “Of course, there is APC 1 and [there is] APC 2 in the state. I will not deny that. I am both the father and face of APC in Anambra. I am certain that some newcomers have joined us since 2021.

“Party is like a church in which you do not stop people from entering; you do not stop people from entering the party to look for salvation or to support the government in power.

“But the challenge is that the new entrants do not want to reckon with old members who have laboured for the party. The old members laboured for the party from the time we were in the Social Democratic Party, SDP, to Advanced Congress of Democrats, ACD, to Action Congress, AC, to Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, and finally birthed as APC.”

Reacting further in a statement signed and made available to journalists in Awka on Thursday by the State Publicity Secretary, Iyke Oliobi, Esq, the party noted that with likes of likes of Senator Andy Uba, Sir Paul Chukwuma, Sen. Ifeanyi Ubah, Sen. Uche Ekwunife and a host of others, APC is fully prepared to take over Agu Awka government house come 2025.

The statement read; “Our attention has been drawn to the recent interview by the former Minister of Labour in the Buhari administration, Senator Chris Ngige.

“We consider it necessary that some issues raised therein are put in proper perspectives. This becomes very necessary when we realize that no one ever fails an examination they set for themselves.

“There is no denying the fact that Ngige is one of the founding fathers of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Anambra state which transmuted from SDP to AD, ACD, AC, ACN and finally, APC. The question to ask is how well did the party fare during the period Ngige held sway.

“Undoubtedly, Ngige enjoyed a large followership of very loyal party faithfuls during this period. The reason people engaged in party activities is to better their lot. Many of Ngige’s followers soon became disillusioned as the only person whose interest was served during the saga was Ngige himself. It was a taboo to oppose him. He single handedly picked those that contested elections. Everything revolved around him. Ngige closed the door against popular politicians who are likely to challenge his authority and went on to contest every election from 2007 to 2015. In 2007 he contested the governorship election which was eventually cancelled by the Supreme Court in a landmark judgment that extended the tenure of Peter Obi to 2010. In 2010 he again contested the governorship race and lost to Peter Obl. In 2015 he contested the Anambra central senatorial seat and lost to Uche Ekwunife.

“The sheer determination of Ngige loyalists who believed that their fortune will only change if their leader, Ngige became a Senator yielded a positive result in 2011. Ngige was thus able to defeat Dora Akunyili who enjoyed tremendous support by Governor Peter Obi and clinched the Anambra central senatorial seat. Ngige went on to serve as Minister of Labour in the cabinet of PMB after his tenure as Senator and held the position for the two successive tenures of PMB.

“It soon became clear to Ngige loyalists that their much awaited reward will never come as none of them was considered for appointment by Ngige with the exception of his family members. In frustration and disappointment, they withdrew their support for Ngige in drove thus ending the Ngige era.

“The stunted growth of APC in Anambra state can largely be attributed to Ngige leadership style. It is on record that Ngige did not support the governorship bid of Tony Nwoye in 2017 neither did he support the governorship bid of Andy Uba for fear of losing his strangle hold on the party. He did not support the presidential bid of senator Tinubu. Ngige can therefore not claim any credit for the new look APC is wearing in Anambra.

“It is also not true that there are two factions of APC in Anambra state. Such factions exist only in the figment of the imagination of the conjurer. The issue of a faction led by Barr. Emeka Ibe was squarely put to rest when the Appeal court sitting in Awka which on the 22nd of February, 2023 dismissed the judgment of an Anambra State High Court seeking the nullification of the state congress of the APC in Anambra state that gave a four-year mandate to the Chief Sir. Basil Ejidike-led State Working Committee down to the Ward Excos, for lack of merit.

“The recent effort being made by the Basil Ejidike-led State Working Committee to re-position the party is bearing fruits with the influx of notable politicians into the party. It is high time Ngige repents of this his ego massaging attitude of ‘’I am the face of APC in Anambra’’ and join hands with the likes of  Senator Andy Uba, Sir Paul Chukwuma, Sen. Ifeanyi Ubah, Sen. Uche Ekwunife and a host of others to ensure that APC takes over Agu Awka government or stop frustrating the effort,” the statement concluded.
