C’River: APC cites volatile security, cultism as reasons not to consider woman for chairmanship position

Communiqué by the Enlarged APC Chieftains in Akamkpa Local Government Area On the Consideration of Chairmanship for Akamkpa Local Government Council

In recognition of the upcoming leadership primary for Chairman of Akamkpa Local Government Council, we, the chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Akamkpa under the aegis of APC Victory and Success Support Group have convened to deliberate on the critical needs of our constituency at this juncture. While we have unwavering respect for the women in our midst and acknowledge their potential in governance, we believe that the unique challenges facing our local government require leadership that is specifically equipped to handle the pressing realities of today. It is, therefore, our considered position that the timing for a woman to serve as chairman is inopportune given the present circumstances.

    1. Volatile Security System: A Call for a Brave Leader

Akamkpa faces an unprecedented level of volatility in its security environment. The complexities of maintaining law and order in the face of growing unrest demand a leader who can respond with both bravery and tenacity. The leader we need at this moment is one who can confront these challenges head-on, make swift and decisive security-related decisions, and restore confidence among the people. While we do not doubt the courage of our womenfolk, the gravity of the current security situation calls for someone with a proven track record in such volatile environments.

    2. High Incidence of Cultism: Daring the System

Cultism has permeated several facets of our society, creating an atmosphere of fear and intimidation. Addressing this menace requires a chairman who is not only audacious but also resolute in dismantling the structures that enable cult-related activities. This is not a battle that can be won through rhetoric alone. It requires a leader who will dare the system, confront entrenched interests, and neutralize these criminal networks. Such a leader must have the grit to face down threats and the stamina to endure the long and often dangerous process of rooting out cultism.

    3. Kidnapping: A Need for Unyielding Resolve

Kidnapping has become a scourge that terrorizes our communities, affecting the everyday lives of citizens. Confronting this evil requires more than token gestures—it demands a leader with the sheer will to challenge the status quo and confront the perpetrators without hesitation. The time for appeasement or hesitation has passed. What Akamkpa requires now is a leader who can inspire confidence through strength, who can take the fight to the kidnappers and restore peace and normalcy to our communities.

    4. Drug Abuse: A Leader Ready to Take Action

The pervasive spread of drug abuse, particularly among the youth, is a ticking time bomb that threatens to unravel the social fabric of our community. A leader who takes office at this time must be willing to roll up their sleeves and work tirelessly to implement not only punitive measures but also meaningful rehabilitation initiatives. The task ahead is enormous and requires an individual who is prepared to work round the clock to eradicate this scourge from our midst. Akamkpa needs a leader who can take immediate and decisive action to curb drug abuse before it engulfs the community.

    5. Akamkpa Needs a Reformer: The Call for a Dogged Leader

The docility that has characterized the political and economic environment in Akamkpa is a cause for concern. Our local government needs more than just political leadership—it needs reform. At this critical juncture, a dogged and visionary reformer is required to revitalize both the political and economic structures of Akamkpa. The reforms that are necessary to put Akamkpa back on the path to progress require a leader with the grit and determination to challenge the existing order and bring about meaningful change.

    6. Balancing the Narrative: Akamkpa is Not Defined by Social Vices

It is important to clarify that this communiqué does not seek to paint Akamkpa as a community deeply rooted in social vices and negative trends. Rather, it highlights the urgency of addressing the challenges that have recently taken root. These challenges, left unaddressed, will only further erode the gains we have made. We believe Akamkpa has the potential for greatness, but it will take strong leadership to harness that potential and steer the local government toward a brighter future.

    7. Womenfolk: Acknowledging Their Strength and Potential

We unequivocally acknowledge the strength, capability, and potential of the women in Akamkpa. This communiqué is not an indictment of their qualifications or abilities. We hold our womenfolk in high esteem, and we recognize their contributions to both governance and societal development. However, the unique circumstances confronting Akamkpa at this time require a specific kind of leadership—one that is equipped to tackle the immediate and pressing challenges we face.

    8. Restoring Normalcy as a Precondition for Seamless Female Leadership

Our position is grounded in the belief that the restoration of normalcy and stability in Akamkpa is a precondition for future female leadership. Once we have confronted and overcome the security, social, and economic challenges currently facing the local government, we will be in a position to embrace seamless leadership transitions that will undoubtedly see women ascend to the highest levels of governance. Now, more than ever, we must focus on stabilizing the political landscape to make room for future progress.

    9. Urgency of the Situation: Time for Decisive Action

The urgency of the situation cannot be overstated. Akamkpa requires decisive action and firm leadership to tackle the issues that have been festering over the years. There is no room for experimentation at this critical moment. The security, economic, and social challenges facing our local government demand a leadership that is firm, experienced, and ready to act without delay. For this reason, we believe that the choice of leadership at this time should reflect the seriousness of the issues we face.

    10. Strength in Political Stability

Political stability is crucial in times of uncertainty. A strong leader who commands respect and inspires confidence is essential for maintaining peace and progress in Akamkpa. Our local government cannot afford the potential risks associated with untested leadership. It is paramount that the chairmanship be held by an individual who has both the experience and the tenacity to steer Akamkpa through these turbulent times and toward a future of stability and growth.

    11. The Ethical Responsibility in Leadership Selection

As custodians of the political future of Akamkpa, we have an ethical responsibility to ensure that the choice of leadership is one that is in the best interest of the people. We must act with integrity, putting the welfare and safety of our community first. This responsibility compels us to support a leader who can rise to the challenges we face, lead with distinction, and lay the foundation for a future where women can seamlessly ascend to leadership roles.

    12. A Call for Unity and Support

In conclusion, we call on all stakeholders in Akamkpa—our fellow APC chieftains, political actors, and the wider community—to unite in support of the leadership selection process that prioritizes the security, stability, and progress of our local government. We remain committed to seeing a woman lead Akamkpa in the near future, but for now, we must address the immediate needs of our people. Together, we can work towards a more secure, prosperous, and inclusive Akamkpa.

Just In: APC to hold solidarity rally in Cross River from August 1st

    By Kelvin Obambon

The Cross River chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) says it will be holding a solidarity rally across the state. This is coming on the heels of the planned nationwide protest against economic hardship in Nigeria billed to take place on August 1st 2024.

Addressing a news conference in Calabar on Wednesday 31st July, state chairman of APC, Barr. Alphonsus Eba, said that the rally which will begin from 1st to 11th August, will highlight the achievements of the federal and state governments, while also appealing to the people to give the government more time for the policies put in place to yield positive results.

According to the APC chairman, “As a party we have to show solidarity with our governor as a way of encouraging him to do more. We shall also show solidarity with Mr President for all the wonderful things he has been doing, which we will use this rally to roll out to our people to know; and in doing so we’ve complied with the order of the federal government through the IG, that anybody who wants to be on the street tomorrow (Thursday 1st August) must do so by getting a permit.

“APC Cross River State in conjunction with right thinking Cross Riverians across party lines have written to the Commissioner of Police for permit to also be on the street. Our commencement point will be the party secretariat through the 12km carnival route. Our point of harbour will be the 11-11 roundabout. We will also intermittently spend time at Rabanna. We will also have time at Efio-Ete junction. These are the routes we have secured.

“To our knowledge, until this moment it is only APC Cross River State that has secured the permit from now till 11 of August to use these roads. From what we have gathered the only available roads for anybody that wants to foment trouble will be around Odukpani junction heading towards Itu head bridge.

“Please take note that we are not looking for trouble. We only want to be on the street to sing praises and thank God Almighty for giving us the duo of President Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu and the Sweet Prince that has brought sweetness to the land. At the end of it we will be having series of engagements with youths and students, religious groups, support groups, IPAC, farmers, civil servants, NURTW, Keke riders, independent marketers and the various groups, all in the name of telling them this is what we have done. The market women will not be left out.”

The meeting which was exclusively for bigwigs of the party in the zone was graced by the Senate President, Dr Godswill Akpabio and the Governor of Cross River State, Prince Bassey Otu.

In his remarks, President of the Nigerian Senate, Dr Akpabio, heaped praises on the NDDC, stating that “So far NDDC is doing a great job. It is now commissioning projects everywhere!”

Senate President rallies APC South South zone to support Tinubu

The President of the Senate, Senator Godswll Akpabio has called on members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the South South zone to continue to lend their support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to achieve his Renewed Hope agenda.

Senator Akpabio made the call at the South South APC National Executive Committee meeting in Calabar, Cross River State on Sunday. The stakeholders’ meeting witnessed a large turn out of members from the six States in the region.

According to Senator Akpabio who paid special tribute to the former Senate President, Dr Joseph Wayas, the South South was strategically positioned in the national scheme of things after 45 years of having held the position of the Senate President in the Second Republic.

“We need to be focused and aim at one vision and when we have that in mind we shall succeed. Here is the South South zone, sitting together. Every section is represented and nobody is left behind and we have to work in the same spirit.

“President Tinubu has assured us that he will never forget the South South region. That is why we have to continue to support the administration to succeed because if he succeeds, we all succeed together. For we lawmakers we were not elected to go to Abuja and fight but to bring the dividends of democracy to our people.

“The votes that the President obtained in the Presidential election from my Senatorial District alone was more than the votes he garnered in the entire five States of the South East zone combined together.

“From this zone, five states out of six were able to contribute more than 25 percent of the votes during the Presidential election of 2023 for President Tinubu. Don’t take this for granted because our party was not the dominant party in the zone before the election.

“That shows that if you are committed you can turn things around in your Senatorial District and your Federal constituency and your Local Government Area. With struggle we can reach our destination. And that is the reason why we are gathered here today,” he said.

Senator Akpabio urged the stakeholders to gear up for the upcoming gubernatorial election in Edo State and implored the party to work hard to win the election so that the South South APC can add another State to Cross River State in the zone.

The Governor of Cross River State and the Coordinator of the APC in the zone, Senator Bassey Otu said the South South APC must work hard to increase the strength of the party in the zone.

“As a person this meeting means a lot to me because the Almighty God detests loneliness. He said it is not good for the man to be alone. I read the President’s lips. He said it is not good for Governor Otu to be alone in the South South region. We are here to turn this into reality,” he said.

Governor Otu thanked the President for the ground breaking of the Lagos- Calabar coastal highway and said the zone will continue to support the President to achieve great successes in his administration’s developmental initiatives

Earlier, in his welcome remarks, the South South Zonal Chairman of the party, Chief Victor Giadom, thanked party stakeholders for their unwavering support for the party. He thanked the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio for his physical presence at the meeting, describing him as “a lover of the South South and unifier of the nation.

“Let me on behalf of the zonal leadership, thank the members of the 10th Senate and President Bola Tinubu, for their confidence in our own, Senator Akpabio for the office of the President of the Senate. There couldn’t have been a better choice for the position,” he said.

APC Group Calls For Sack Of Tinubu’s Minister

A prominent APC support group in Enugu State, Enugu Progressive Ambassadors has called on the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to sack the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Chief Uche Geoffrey Nnaji for what the group described as unworthy and shameful representation of Enugu State APC in the cabinet of the president. The group noted that Enugu State APC has many qualified party men and women with credible credentials, personalities and integrity that would make the state proud rather than Uche Nnaji that has been involved in many scandals thus, giving Enugu State a bad image among other states at the ministerial level.

The group in a press conference in Enugu noted with dismay that Chief Uche Nnaji since his day one in office has been working against the interest of building the party in the state but rather causing division and further polarizing the unity the party has been enjoying before he was made a minister. Chief Uche Nnaji has been fingered as mastermind of many internal party crises in Enugu State using his position as minister to wreck havock within the party. This is the reason many party faithfuls and loyalist has been threatening to leave the party if urgent step is not taken to address the issue in which Enugu State APC have unanimously agreed that the ministerial slot of the state given to Uche Nnaji is a curse rather than blessing to the state, hence demanded his removal as Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

According to the spokesperson of Enugu Progressive Ambassadors, Chief Tochukwu Obinna who addressed the newsmen said that Chief Uche Nnaji is too scandalous to represent Enugu state APC at the ministerial level and therefore saw it as a shame that APC members in the state could not bear any longer, hence the urgent need to address the president, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu through the press conference. In his words, “Enugu Progressive Ambassadors is speaking on behalf of Enugu State APC that we seek the sack of the minister of Innovation, Science and Technology Chief Uche Nnaji, a man we referred to as scandalous minister. We are not comfortable that a man with fraudulent national service certificate is the one representing us.”

“It is on record that Uche Nnaji has been the brain behind many crises in Enugu state APC. His ministerial position is not favouring Enugu State APC but we rather see it as a curse to us. This is the bitter pill we have been trying to swallow since his emergence as minister from our state. He has been using his position which should be a benefit to the state to fuel discord to the extent that majority of our loyal and faithful members have been threatening to leave the party just because of him. Here is a man that has been promoting drugs, giving money to young men and sponsoring them abroad for the sake of his drug business. These are not mere allegations but facts and realities that are in the open in Enugu state. We are speaking out to save the integrity of our party as we look forward to the coming 2027 elections in the state”

“We use the opportunity of this press conference to call on Mr President, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to save Enugu State APC from doom by relieving Uche Nnaji of his position and appointing a credible and loyal party man that would rebuild Enugu state APC to represent Enugu State at the ministerial level.”

“We also call on our president for the sake of his Renewed Hope Mantra to call on the relevant agency to investigate and prosecute Uche Nnaji for forging national service (NYSC) certificate. Enugu State APC deserves the best in this Renewed Hope Administration and we look forward to giving the president a landslide victory in Enugu State in the coming 2027 presidential election.”
