Anambra elders accused Soludo LGA’s Commissioner of imposing leadership in Nimo community

    By Ovat Abeng

Elders from Nimo community in Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State, has accused the State Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Matters Tony Collins Nwabunewanne, of imposing town Union Leadership on them.

They alleged that the Commissioner deployed people from their neighboring communities of Abacha, Eziowelle and even Abakaliki people residing within the area to vote against the wishes of Nimo people in the just concluded Nimo Town Union Election, held on January 4th, 2024.

The elders under the auspices of Nimo Elders Forum, made their position known in a communique jointly signed by the Chairman of the Forum, Ogbuefi Akuluouno Ayiba, Secretary, Ogbuefi Akuchukwu Muo and it Public Relations Officer, Ogbuefi Fred Awagu, during a press conference, held at Georan Hotel and Suite Nimo, on Friday.

They expressed displeasure with the way the Nimo Town Union elections were observed in breach by the Hon Commissioner for Chieftaincy and Community Matters, Hon Tony Collins Nwabunwanne, on January 4, 2024.

They described the development as an administrative rascality by Mr. Commissioner

According to them, what happened on January 4 were not elections but a flagrant abuse and rape of the Nimo Constitution. You must agree with us that any society not governed by laws will be like animal society.

“The Nimo Town Union Elections were originally scheduled to hold on December 27, 2023, a date usually set aside for such by the town’s constitution. But that day the town’s constitution was turned on its head in a manner that suggested a hidden agenda by the Commissioner.

“First, he said that those who had served the first of their two tenures as VP 1, 2 and 3 should not re-contest and they were disqualified against the provisions of the town’s constitution that stipulates two tenures. This is very strange.

“This decision was taken during a meeting in Awka presided over by the Commissioner with those he handpicked.

“Secondly, on the day of the elections a court order originated by a party, dissatisfied with his disqualification, was served on the electoral committee which, acting on it, announced the postponement of the elections. The chairman of the electoral committee and the secretary explained to the Commissioner that they would not go ahead with the elections because of this court service but the Commissioner went ahead with the exercise without the electoral body. Another strange development.

“Against the provisions of the Nimo Constitution, the Commissioner conducted the elections with an improvised register, asking the few people around to write their names and quarters. This led to strangers from Abacha, Eziowelle and even Abakaliki, writing their names and were allowed to vote.

“Now we ask, can elections be conducted in Nigeria without the electoral body and without a voters register? The Nimo Constitution provided that only those who are financially up to date can vote and be voted for. This was thrown aside by the Commissioner.

“Again there was a court suit querying the qualification of some candidates which was ignored too.

“For example, Engr Daniel Anakpe who was later declared the winner of the President General (PG) election by the Commissioner, only attended the meeting of the Nimo National Assembly once as against three years prior to the election year as enshrined in the Nimo Constitution. Some other candidates for other positions had same issue but were cleared in error by the electoral committee, while few others didn’t even purchase the form nor were they screened, but Mr. Commissioner allowed them to contest as against the Electoral Committee guidelines and as the Town Union Constitution provides.

“Efforts were made by people to be shown the register where those candidates marked attendance to meetings but the registers were not produced by the Nimo Town Development Union, NTDU, on the grounds that the Electoral Committee had postponed the election due to the assumed irregularities surrounding the election which metamorphosed into litigation.

Before then, one of the candidates for Vice President (VP) 1, Hon Chigbo Anadebe, who was a member of the electoral committee, had been suspended for partisanship and he has not yet accepted his suspension, but he went ahead to contest for the election without buying form or being screened.

“Again, another of the VP candidates just joined the Town Union about 4 years now but has never attended the Nimo Town Development Union (NTDU) General Assembly meeting for once but the Commissioner allowed him to contest for the election.

“The Nimo Constitution provided for secret ballot which the Town Union Electoral Committee adopted but the Commissioner insisted on Option A4 for his assumed inordinances.

“Also, the Commissioner has no right to conduct an election as he’s only supposed to be an observer but he conducted such in Nimo and this amounted to what we call administrative rascality.

“In all, we reiterate that the Nimo Town Union Elections were marred by gross irregularities and constitutional breaches and cannot stand.

“We therefore, as peace loving and concerned elders of the town, call on Mr Governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo, to not only call his Commissioner to order, but to put machinery in motion for the rescheduling of the elections as and when due.

“We insist that the process must be right so that justice will be served. It is total bastardization for your Commissioner who knows the law to come to Nimo, a great Community that has produced Supreme Court Judge (Justice A.I. Iguh Rtd), Chief Justices of Anambra State (Justice A.I. Iguh Rtd, Justice F.G.C. Uyanna Rtd and Justice G.U. Ononiba Rtd), Appeal Court Judge (Justice Chinwe Iyizoba Rtd), host of other Judges, SANs, over 10 Magistrates, over 100 Lawyers, over 30 Professors, over 55 Medical Doctors of high repute, Federal and State Permanent Secretaries and Directors, and a host of other dignitaries, and Mr. Commissioner out of his inordinacies made himself a demigod simply because he is married to a Nimo daughter and threw Nimo into anarchy and lawlessness; what an administrative and conjugal rascality!

“We trust on the sagacity of Mr Governor to do the right thing, address this anomaly and call Mr. Commissioner to order, knowing full well that Nimo Community is Soludo, and Soludo is Nimo Community.

“As we eagerly await the actions of Your Excellency Prof. Charles Soludo in curtailing some excesses of Mr. Commissioner, using Nimo and Neni as a case study of his administrative high-handedness. A stitch in time saves nine,” the elders concluded.

Anambra 2025: Stop frustrating our effort in taking over power – APC warns Ngige

    By Ovat Abeng

Anambra State Chapter of the All Progressive Congress (APC), has warned the former Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige to stop frustrating the Party’s effort in taking over power from the State ruling-All Progressive Grand Alliance APGA come 2025 governorship election in the state.

The party accused the Minister of been self-centered in the affairs of the party in the state

The Paradise News gathered that Ngige, while speaking to Journalists at his country home in Alor, Idemili South Local Government Area of the State, recently, said that there are two factions of the party in the state but maintained that the situation would not be a problem when the next governorship election comes up in 2025.

He said: “Of course, there is APC 1 and [there is] APC 2 in the state. I will not deny that. I am both the father and face of APC in Anambra. I am certain that some newcomers have joined us since 2021.

“Party is like a church in which you do not stop people from entering; you do not stop people from entering the party to look for salvation or to support the government in power.

“But the challenge is that the new entrants do not want to reckon with old members who have laboured for the party. The old members laboured for the party from the time we were in the Social Democratic Party, SDP, to Advanced Congress of Democrats, ACD, to Action Congress, AC, to Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, and finally birthed as APC.”

Reacting further in a statement signed and made available to journalists in Awka on Thursday by the State Publicity Secretary, Iyke Oliobi, Esq, the party noted that with likes of likes of Senator Andy Uba, Sir Paul Chukwuma, Sen. Ifeanyi Ubah, Sen. Uche Ekwunife and a host of others, APC is fully prepared to take over Agu Awka government house come 2025.

The statement read; “Our attention has been drawn to the recent interview by the former Minister of Labour in the Buhari administration, Senator Chris Ngige.

“We consider it necessary that some issues raised therein are put in proper perspectives. This becomes very necessary when we realize that no one ever fails an examination they set for themselves.

“There is no denying the fact that Ngige is one of the founding fathers of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Anambra state which transmuted from SDP to AD, ACD, AC, ACN and finally, APC. The question to ask is how well did the party fare during the period Ngige held sway.

“Undoubtedly, Ngige enjoyed a large followership of very loyal party faithfuls during this period. The reason people engaged in party activities is to better their lot. Many of Ngige’s followers soon became disillusioned as the only person whose interest was served during the saga was Ngige himself. It was a taboo to oppose him. He single handedly picked those that contested elections. Everything revolved around him. Ngige closed the door against popular politicians who are likely to challenge his authority and went on to contest every election from 2007 to 2015. In 2007 he contested the governorship election which was eventually cancelled by the Supreme Court in a landmark judgment that extended the tenure of Peter Obi to 2010. In 2010 he again contested the governorship race and lost to Peter Obl. In 2015 he contested the Anambra central senatorial seat and lost to Uche Ekwunife.

“The sheer determination of Ngige loyalists who believed that their fortune will only change if their leader, Ngige became a Senator yielded a positive result in 2011. Ngige was thus able to defeat Dora Akunyili who enjoyed tremendous support by Governor Peter Obi and clinched the Anambra central senatorial seat. Ngige went on to serve as Minister of Labour in the cabinet of PMB after his tenure as Senator and held the position for the two successive tenures of PMB.

“It soon became clear to Ngige loyalists that their much awaited reward will never come as none of them was considered for appointment by Ngige with the exception of his family members. In frustration and disappointment, they withdrew their support for Ngige in drove thus ending the Ngige era.

“The stunted growth of APC in Anambra state can largely be attributed to Ngige leadership style. It is on record that Ngige did not support the governorship bid of Tony Nwoye in 2017 neither did he support the governorship bid of Andy Uba for fear of losing his strangle hold on the party. He did not support the presidential bid of senator Tinubu. Ngige can therefore not claim any credit for the new look APC is wearing in Anambra.

“It is also not true that there are two factions of APC in Anambra state. Such factions exist only in the figment of the imagination of the conjurer. The issue of a faction led by Barr. Emeka Ibe was squarely put to rest when the Appeal court sitting in Awka which on the 22nd of February, 2023 dismissed the judgment of an Anambra State High Court seeking the nullification of the state congress of the APC in Anambra state that gave a four-year mandate to the Chief Sir. Basil Ejidike-led State Working Committee down to the Ward Excos, for lack of merit.

“The recent effort being made by the Basil Ejidike-led State Working Committee to re-position the party is bearing fruits with the influx of notable politicians into the party. It is high time Ngige repents of this his ego massaging attitude of ‘’I am the face of APC in Anambra’’ and join hands with the likes of  Senator Andy Uba, Sir Paul Chukwuma, Sen. Ifeanyi Ubah, Sen. Uche Ekwunife and a host of others to ensure that APC takes over Agu Awka government or stop frustrating the effort,” the statement concluded.

A release signed by the State Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs Mr Tony-Collins Nawbunwanne said the Governor’s directive is in exercise of his powers under Section Two (C) of the Anambra State Traditional Rulers Law 2020 as amended.

The release also required Igwe Ezeani to show why his certificate of recognition should not be withdrawn in line with the Traditional Rulers Law and advised Igwe Ezeani to stop parading himself as the traditional ruler of Neni Community.

The release explained that the suspension was because of the violation of Traditional Rulers Code of Conduct.

According to the release, the code of conduct for traditional rulers in Anambra State provides that no traditional ruler can confer Chieftaincy title on anyone outside his community without obtaining the permission of the traditional ruler of the recipient community while the state government has equally issued a directive to the effect that no such Chieftaincy title should be conferred by any traditional ruler on a recipient outside his community without obtaining clearance from the ministry.

It explained that the regulations and measures are to among other things prevent abuses and trading of chieftaincy titles for money thereby bringing the traditional institution to disrepute.

Reacting further on the development while briefing Journalists at his Palace in Neni, on Wednesday, Igwe Ezeani, said he did that out of ignorance, noting that he didn’t know that a law to that effect was amended in 2020.

According to him, I don’t award the Chieftaincy titles to Senator Ubah and others on political ground as being speculated in different quarters but based on their services to humanity.

“I was shock when I received the suspension letter from someone via WhatsApp message. I am presently 73 years old.

“I was coronated as the Traditional ruler of the community on 10th May, 2003.

“I am a Catholic, a Knight of Saint Mbolumba and the Anambra Central Senatorial District Traditional Ruler Council Chairman. I am not a pompous person. I am a humble person, a man of integrity to the core. I wouldn’t have do that if I have known.

“Since I received the letter, the development has set me thinking.

“I sincerely apologized to whosoever the Chieftaincy titles issue has offended to forgive me.

“And also if what I have done violated the State Traditional Rulers Code of Conduct, on behalf of myself, my cabinet members and the entire people of Neni community, I  begged the governor to please forgive me,” the Monarch appealed.

Chieftaincy title: ‘Soludo envies me’ – Ifeanyi Ubah’s response to suspension of Anambra monarch

    By Ovat Abeng

The senator representing Anambra South senatorial zone, Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, has reacted to the suspension of the traditional ruler of Neni, a community in Anaocha Local Government Area of the State.

A suspension letter by Anambra State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Tony Collins Nwabunwanne, accused HRM Igwe Damian Ezeani of not seeking clearance from the state government before bestowing titles on people, including ‘persons with questionable character.’

The monarch had, during the Yuletide, conferred on Senator Ubah the title of Odenjinji of Neni, which is similar to the title Soludo also holds in his Isuofia community.

In his reaction, Ubah,in a statement made available to Journalists in Awka, on Tuesday from his media office, said: “The entire game is all about politics. Soludo is frustrated by my rising popularity. I’m not the only person to receive a chieftaincy title. Former Chief of Army Staff Buratai was honoured within the same period; Vice President Kashim Shettima was also honoured; Mr President was honoured in absentia. Why is my own different?”

Uba added: “The governor is frustrated by my acceptance and popularity; he is jittery about the next governorship election, but I leave him to his conscience.”

Ubah, in October 2023, defected from the Young Progressives Party, YPP, to the All Progressives Congress, APC. He was later received into the party in December, alongside another popular grassroots politician, Senator Uche Ekwunife. This action set off an alarm about a possible alliance between the two to unseat Soludo in the 2025 governorship election.

This may have sparked some emotions among members of the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, and the state government.

Anambra is one of the states that holds off-season elections. Its governorship election would be due in 2025.

According to the Senator, what I am doing here today is to give back to the society and to thank God for seeing me through the February 28th, 2023 general election that makes me who I am at the moment and not for a political campaign.

“The beneficiaries, mostly, the youths and farmers cut across political parties in all the seven local government areas; Ayamelum, Anambra East, Anambra West, Oyi, Ogbaru, Onitsha North and Onitsha South that constitute Anambra North Senatorial District.
