Soludo’s two years in office, a disaster – Anambra PDP

    By Ovat Abeng

Anambra State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described the two year rule of APGA government in the State as a disaster.

Speaking to journalists in Awka, on Wednesday, in response to the planned celebration of second year in office, of the state Governor, Prof Charles Soludo, the state Chairman of PDP, Engr Chigozie Igwe said, “we are actually disappointed that the governor is celebrating his two years in office and talking about second term when he had failed to meet the expectations of the people of Anambra state in his first two years in office”.

“We warned earlier that he was heading to failure and had thought that he would have used the time to critically assess and identify his shortcomings, which are very huge, with the aim of working harder to better his performance”, Igwe said.

He also said, “You can see that Soludo feels very satisfied with the little that he has done and do not think that he has more to offer. But Soludo’s best is not good enough for Ndi Anambra, who as the light of the nation, deserve more than the peanuts that this government is dishing out in the name of dividends of democracy”.

He singled out the Awka capital territory, the local government system and the security of lives of Anambra people, as the worst hit areas of the governor’s misrule.

He said, “The Awka capital territory remains the worst state capital in Nigeria with very poor infrastructural condition and insecurity which has driven many businesses away, resulting in capital flight and dearth of weekend economy while leaving the state capital, Awka to look more like a ghost town”.

Igwe further said, “The local government system is in a bigger mess in Anambra state, where Gov. Soludo has refused to conduct local government elections. He preferred to work with self appointed caretaker local government chairmen, who many view as undertakers that provide conduits for signing away the monthly Federal allocations meant for the local government areas”.

“So, with the Emasculation of the local government system which is the tier of government that is closest to the people by the Soludo government, true democratic deliveries have become very far from the people and that is why we have in Anambra state, today, an aristocratic governance that does not resonate with the wellbeing and feelings of Ndi Anambra”, Igwe said.

He said that the inability of the Soludo government to deal with insecurity in Anambra state has become what he described as “an albatross of meaningful governmental impact”.

Igwe said, “It is mind boggling that despite the huge resources claimed to have been deployed by the Soludo government to fight insecurity, Anambrarians have not seen any positive result. Kidnappings, robberies, assassinations, killings among others are yet to abate”.

“At the last count, about six Presidents General of various Anambra communities have lost their lives to criminals under curious circumstances. They are PGs of Obosi, Nanka, Nimo, Oroma-Etiti, Umuoji and Omor”, he said.

Igwe said further, “It is not a hidden fact that as at today, some communities in Ihiala axis are firmly under the control of criminals where residents are mandated to either pay taxes to the criminals or die”.

He said that PDP is prepared to provide a credible alternative when the time comes.

He said, “PDP will wipe the tears of Anambra people when the time comes at the expiration of this sad experience. The PDP was on a trajectory, taking Anambra to great heights before the movement was terminated by APGA incursions in 2006. But the eighteen years of APGA rule in Anambra state turned out to be a very bad experience for the people with stagnation in human and infrastructural development,” the Chairman stated.

The Anambra State Association of Town Union (ASATU), has appealed to governor, Chukwuma Charles Soludo to conscript the Nigerian Hunters and Forest Security Service (NHFSS) into the state security structure.

The appealed was made during the association’s peaceful/thank -you solidarity match in Awka, on Wednesday.

According to the National President of ASATU, Barrister Titus Akpudo, who spoke to Journalists shortly after the match, said the involvement of NHFSS will serve as another credible alternative in providing watertight security in the villages and communities because they are synonymous with the forests.

He noted that the Hunters and Forest Security Service (NHFSS) will work in synergy with the Anambra Vigilante Group (AVG), to comb troubled  communities in the state especially communities in Anambra-South region as no other security outfits could understand or speak the language of the forests better than hunters and the AGV respectively.

Barrister Akpudo said the solidarity match was also to passed a vote of confidence in the governor  for his uncommon leadership style, development strides in the state, peaceful disposition, proactive security interventions, youth empowerments, health, road projects and educational facilities across communities as well as his approach to governance anchored on fear of God, vision, love, peace, humility and generosity.

“The walk was to show appreciation to governor Soludo on the ongoing transformation across the 179 communities that constitute the State.

“We are all gathered here to say thank you to governor Soludo. ASATU is happy with him and we are completely loyal to his administration”.

“ASATU will continue to support him until he finishes his first term and we are also going to support him to make sure that he achieved his second term agenda in order to complete all the projects he has started in the state. So, I urged him not to relent, he pleaded.

The President General of Nawfia community, Dr. Daniel Okoye and his Adazi-Nnukwu community counterpart, Engr. Cyril Anieto, in their seperate interview also  appealed to the governor to put more effort in curtailing security challenges in some of communities that are still under the siege of criminal elements.

Soludo Distributes 2,000 Laptops to Anambra Headteachers, ICT Teachers, Principals

    By Ovat Abeng

In keeping with his mantra of ‘Everything Technology and Technology Everywhere’, the Governor of Anambra State, Charles Chukwuma Soludo, on Tuesday, distributed 2,000 brand new laptops to head teachers, ICT teachers, and principals of public and public-mission schools across the state.

The distribution aligns with the vision of the Governor, which the Anambra State ICT Agency is driving, to ensure the full digitization of all sectors of the state economy.

The implication of headteachers, ICT teachers, and principals owning laptops is that they will fully key into the digitization vision of Mr. Governor and, as such, guide school pupils and students early in their lives to join the digital revolution in the state.

In Governor Soludo’s speech, “The teachers are moulders of men and women and as such, critical partners in the new Anambra project.

And if you want to predict the future of any society, look at the quality of their teachers.”

He said the state cannot be talking about Everything Technology and Technology Everywhere when the teachers and head teachers are still in analog mode.

“We have begun and as resources permit us, we will continue to prioritize work tools for our teachers and students.

We will also continue to scale up the numbers.

“We have launched the free public Wi-Fi in some strategic places and we will scale it too to the schools to begin to create the opportunity for the ingenuity and creativity of our students and pupils to find expression.

”We are deliberate about our young people because of their capacity to uptake the technological availing and make the most out of it.

“Therefore, the teachers need to be ahead in terms of technology to be able to champion 21st-century education that is technology-driven.

“We had started with the civil servants and we want to get to the point where every teacher would have their laptops as they have their phones.

“We are very intentional about it that we must provide you with the enabling work tools you require to get our children to the next level we desire technology-wise.

While we aspire to get your schools to be smart, you too must be first smart.

“We have to upscale because you can’t give what you don’t have.

“We have the Head of our ICT Agency and the Solution Innovation District here and we are looking at working with them to have structured training programs, to ensure they put these equipment to use, exploring the latest Artificial Intelligence enablement,” the governor promised.

Soludo maintained that in the last 24 months, the Anambra people have seen the transformation his administration had brought into the state governance, which has positively affected the lives of our people, assuring that more is to come.

On his part, the Managing Director of the State ICT Agency, Mr. Chukwuemeka Fred Agbata, CFA, who played a key role at the event held at the International Conference Centre, Awka, said the governor has again by the distribution, reinforced commitment towards making Anambra State a technology hub, not only in the Southeast but also in the entire nation.

Agbata noted that capturing the teachers in the digitization revolution signifies a brighter future for the state, considering how critical young people are to the state’s technological advancement.

He made it clear that the state has been able to make giant strides in the technology area because Mr. Governor believes in the power of technology and has stepped out a strong foot in terms of investment in the sector.

“Today, the Governor has made Wi-Fi available in some public places where the people’s creativity needs to be enhanced in the areas of education, commerce, and public service.

“There is no doubt that with Mr. Governor’s mindset, better days are ahead for technology.

“For us at the ICT agency, the training which Mr. Governor spoke about is a no-brainer.

“Recall that the ICT Agency has partnered with relevant government agencies to bring technology to ease recruitment processes across various sectors and we are doing more.

“This is just to say that we are ready to drive the ‘Everything Technology and Technology Everywhere’ vision of Mr. Governor, to make Mr. Governor’s dream for a digitized Anambra State, a reality,” Agbata assured.

Some of the recipients of the laptops, whose joys knew no bounds, described Governor Soludo as a proactive leader, who is conscious of the need of the times.

Promising to deploy the equipment effectively for the purpose it was intended, the headteachers and principals said they are at home with the digital revolution the governor is bringing to the state education sector.

Climate Action Africa Offers Six Simple Climate Solutions For Nigeria

    By Ovat Abeng

Climate Action Africa has offered six simple solution that will bring big impact in Nigeria

The solutions according to the Co-Founder and Executive Director of the organisation, Grace Oluchi Mbah, in a statement in Awka on Tuesday, is an opportunities Nigerian communities can adopt to build resilience and secure a sustainable future.

    She gave below the six simple climate solutions Nigeria can explore to as followed;

Embrace Climate-Smart Agriculture: Nigeria is a developing economy with a 2022 statistics of an estimated population of 88.4 million people who live in extreme poverty. Agriculture can be a solution to the poverty experienced by a majority in Nigeria. According to the World Bank, investing in the agricultural sector is more effective at raising incomes among the world’s poorest. Still, traditional farming methods in Nigeria are often vulnerable to droughts and floods.

Climate-smart agriculture (CSA) offers a solution. CSA is a set of farming methods that is aimed at increasing the resilience and productivity of the land affected by climate change. Practices like using drought-resistant crop varieties, practicing water-saving irrigation techniques like drip irrigation, and incorporating cover crops to improve soil health all contribute to a more resilient agricultural system. By adopting CSA techniques, Nigerian farmers can not only protect their livelihoods but also become part of the climate solution. It is important to note that Climate Smart Agriculture is a solution to the many problems caused by climate shocks but not a final solution to climate change.

Plant Trees, Reap the Rewards: The United Nations places Nigeria as the highest with a deforestation rate in the world, with an estimated 3.7% of its forest lost every year. Expanding agriculture and logging; both illegal and legal are some of the causes of deforestation in Nigeria. Still, it is imperative to understand that forests play a vital role in regulating climate.

Interestingly, in 2023, some of the States in Nigeria were involved in tree-planting initiatives. There is still a lot that needs to be done. Nigeria could take a cue from Ethiopia that accomplished an exceptional feat in 2019 when they planted 350 million trees within 12 hours. Large-scale tree planting initiatives can create green corridors, improve air quality, and mitigate the effects of floods and droughts.  Planting trees also provides economic benefits. Programs that encourage community involvement in tree planting, with benefits like carbon credits or fruit production, can create a sense of ownership and ensure the long-term success of these initiatives.

Harness the Power of Nature: Harnessing solar energy technologies for generating electricity as an option for fossil fuel energy usage in Nigeria could prove to be a huge solution to climate change problems. The solar radiation potential in the northern and southern regions in Nigeria is given as 5.62 up to 7.01 and 3.54 up to 5.43 kWhm-2 respectively. Nigeria boasts abundant sunshine and investing in solar energy solutions like rooftop panels or community solar farms can significantly reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

Solar power is not just environmentally friendly; it’s also reliable and cost-effective in the long run.  Government incentives and micro loans can make solar technology more accessible, empowering individual households and businesses to become energy independent. Practical solutions are needed to accelerate the adoption of renewable energy. A notable example is the “Nigeria Police Green Initiative” that was announced last year.

Waste Not, Want Not: The challenge of having sanitary landfills in Nigeria is still a huge conversation when it comes to creating solutions for climate change problems. Most States in Nigeria still operate open dumping. Organic waste, when left to decompose in landfills, releases methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Composting kitchen scraps and yard waste transforms this waste into nutrient-rich fertilizer, perfect for boosting soil health in gardens and farms. This simple practice reduces reliance on chemical fertilizers, promotes a circular economy, and mitigates climate change.

Landfills can also be areas that can be transformed into thriving green spaces that would be fit for the whole surrounding community to enjoy. Some examples are the Mucking Marshes Landfill in England that was transformed to Thurrock Thameside Nature Park, Mount Trashmore Park in Virginia, USA, Qiaoyuan Park in China and Chambers Gully in Australia.

Embrace Sustainable Water Management: Nigeria faces growing water scarcity. Inadequate access to water contributes to the water and sanitation crisis in Nigeria. According to the World Bank, approximately 70 million Nigerians do not have access to safe drinking water and 144 million do not have access to basic sanitation facilities. One solution to the water crisis that affects climate change in Nigeria is to adopt sustainable water management.

Rainwater harvesting systems can capture and store precious rainwater for later use. This captured water can be used for irrigation, washing, or even drinking after proper treatment.  Promoting water-saving practices like fixing leaky faucets and taking shorter showers can further reduce pressure on freshwater resources.

And Empowering Communities, Building Together: The success of climate solutions hinges on community engagement. Investing in education and awareness programs empowers communities to understand the threat of climate change and take ownership of solutions. Supporting local NGOs and community leaders who are spearheading climate action initiatives is crucial.

According to her, “these six solutions are just a starting point and by adopting these practices and fostering a spirit of innovation, Nigerian communities can build resilience, mitigate the effects of climate change, and create a more sustainable future for generations to come. The journey towards a climate-resilient Nigeria requires collaboration between government, businesses, and communities.

“With collective action and a commitment to these simple yet impactful solutions, Nigeria can not only weather the storm of climate change but emerge stronger and more sustainable than ever before,” she narrated.
