Nigeria can be free from bad leadership, crime only when we work with God – Knight Ezenwaji

    By Ovat Abeng

The President, Awka Diocesan Council of Knight, Anglican Communion, Anambra State, Sir Prof. Emmanuel Emelummadu Ezenwaji, has said that Nigeria can be free from bad leadership, crime, only when we work and pray to God Almighty alone.

He argued that the quest for power and worth among some Nigeria leaders including religious leaders has deviated their hearts from worshipping God in totality.

Ezenwaji, who made his position known while speaking to Journalists at the just concluded 2nd session of the 13th Synod of the Diocese, held at the Church of Pentecost Awka, on Sunday, regretted that Nigerians are enduring immense suffering as the prices of essential commodities soar to higher and higher every day.

According to him, over 75 percent Nigerians are still living under poverty despite Churches spread across the nook and cranny of this country.

“The unbearable pain of poverty and hunger that Nigerians are facing may result into unbearable situation that may unseat the peace of the nation-Nigeria. Hunger is so much in the land. Over 75 percent of Nigeria population are poor and the only solution to all this problems is for us to rally-round God Almighty for help.

“The people are multi-dimensional poor. I strongly believe that if the Church is good, the entire nation would be good.

“As a leader, when you are cut-cornering, you are cheating on the nation and the nation would not moved forward as well.

“This is a country that pray so much. This is a country that has a lot of Churches and this is the same country where evil multiples everyday. So, something is wrong somewhere and it is because the Churches are not doing  very well to arrest the situation.

“It is only when the Churches starts doing well that is when God will hear our cry like he heard the cry of the Israelites in the Bible, when they were in wilderness.

“The Church should do more on her responsibilities of building up people with Godly character, people with good morals and with this measure, there will be no crime for the government to fight on.

“So, prayers and working with God remains the only solution to Nigeria problem,” he added.

Ezenwaji also called on the church leaders to intensify efforts in the ministry of children so as to catch them young into noble characters as they grow into maturity.

It was gathered that the 3-day Synod with the theme “Running the Christian Race: Implications for the church in perilous times” attracted the presence of over 25 Bishops, hundreds of clergy, traditional rulers, government functionaries among others.

You’ve been out of circulation politically for a while. Was it on purpose or for any other reason?

I think the better way to put it is, I am not a career politician in the Nigerian sense. I see politics as an avenue to increase my ability to impact on our people and environment and so, I have at different times, offered to serve at different levels, from aspiring to represent Aguata Federal Constituency at the National Assembly, to aspiring to the Governorship of Anambra State.

I have also sponsored and supported many candidates for elective offices. So, it is not correct to say that I have been politically out of circulation. I have been politically very active and involved. I do not contest every election and do not unnecessarily play to the gallery to be noticed. I have a business to run, so, whenever I offer myself and things pan out differently, I retreat and concentrate in pursuing other live endeavours to continue to build capacity to impact my environment and society.

Can you confirm the stories that you’re gunning for the governorship of Anambra on Labour Party platform?

Yes, I am a member of the Labour Party and would want to contest the upcoming Anambra State Gubernatorial Election under the banner and platform of the party.

What informed your choice of party?

As it were, I have seen it all in APGA, ACN, and APC. I have had the benefit of participating at very high levels within these parties and have seen the strengths and weaknesses in these parties. I have seen promises, hopes and expectations raised and dashed in these parties. The Labour Party today, under the Leadership of Mr Peter Obi, is the only vista of hope for Nigeria to do things differently, to restore and rebuild Nigeria.

It is the only hope that Nigeria can truly reduce the debilitating cost of governance in order to free resources for development, as well as eliminating the trend of creating wealthy individuals without enterprise; where government monies end up in people’s pockets. That’s why I belong to the Labour Party because it holds the best hope for a better Nigeria.

How do you rate your chances of clinching the party’s ticket ahead of those seen to have established more ground in the party?

All of us joined the Labour Party immediately Mr Peter Obi became the Presidential Candidate of the Party in 2022. You very well know how the election was won at the polling booths and lost at the courts. I believe we have all introspected on the performance of those who are seen to have established ground in the Labour Party. And if I may ask, which ground are we talking about? Is the ground you are talking about located in the social media or where? I believe the situation calls for the ability to think out of the box and offer sustainable solutions for a paradigm shift.

That is the advantage I have and that is the ground that will enable me to clinch the ticket. The essence of politics is to win an election and use the position to create a better society. That’s what I bring and I believe the Leadership of our party will distinguish the serious from the pretenders. So, my chances are very very high and bright.

Have you made consultations with relevant stakeholders and what are the results?

Consultations are ongoing, and so far so good. It takes time to build relationships and momentum. I have seen that our people want someone different who will bring back the era of a Governor with a businessman’s mindset. A businessman is one who has been able to create a sustainable enterprise through training, knowledge and experience.

Such a person works harder than any person in the organization, someone who is awake when others are asleep, the chief sales man, the chief accountant and dreamer of the business. That’s the leader that Anambra needs today to secure Anambra State, create wealth for massive infrastructural development, including generating electricity to power industries and health systems in Anambra which will create jobs for the teeming youths of our state. I share these ideas as I consult and these are the very areas where our state is lagging behind and these are what our people are yearning for.

Battling against the incumbent in our political clime isn’t an easy thing. Do you have the structure to upset the apple cart?

It is not going to be about me only. The election will be fought and won on the structure of the Labour Party which will encompass the structures of our Leader, Mr Peter Obi; our Senators; our House of Representatives and House of Assembly members and all Labour Party stakeholders – including the NLC and all Anambrarians who have been oppressed and harassed by revenue collectors under the current APGA Government under Governor Soludo.

The Labour Party is the home of all the neglected and disenchanted original APGA members and all the people of good will who have been muzzled out of PDP and APC. The arrogance, self-opinionated and garrulous nature of the incumbent will be on the scale.

How do you rate Soludo’s performance after two years?

Soludo is a Professor – very good at coining high sounding rhetoric – like making Anambra a prosperous and livable homeland, Africa-Dubai-Taiwan…but scores zero on performance and delivery of the goods because of his abysmal failure on security, teamwork and empathy. During Okwadike’s burial ceremony at Igboukwu, the Governor was busy chastising the National Burial Committee for sharing printed brochures against the Anambra State Burial Law while kidnappers laid ambush in the very vicinity of the burial and picking mourners leaving the funeral with ease – a case of someone chasing a rat when his house is on fire!

The whole of Anambra South is under siege and the Governor doesn’t seem to care. The Anambra flamboyant burial culture is part of Anambra DNA that helps to bring our people back home and impact on the local economy – musicians, hoteliers, gas and fuel stations, caterers and event planners and decorators… These are vital parts of the Anambra Economy that the Governor is killing with this needless busybody implementation of the Burial Law.

When I become Governor, I will introduce a Bill to modify the current Burial Law. If you have the resources, you should lawfully organize any burial as you wish, provided you obtain the necessary permits. Our people are also over taxed. I will secure Anambra, provide 24/7 electricity to power industries and homes in Anambra. Security and Power will attract Anambra capital back home to create employment for our youths and generate a better tax revenue for our state. Anambra State is blessed with the highest number of billionaires yearning for the right environment to repatriate their wealth home. Creating the conducive atmosphere for this is my number one priority.

Security in Anambra is getting worse, how would you tackle it if you were Soludo?

You mean if I become the Governor, because I cannot be Soludo? I will be better that Soludo. I will ensure that the security agencies (police, DSS and military) are properly funded to acquire all the advanced technology and training that they need to better secure the state.

The town unions will also be empowered to secure their towns under the control of a centralized and better organized and remunerated Anambra Vigilante Service. But the root cause of insecurity is youth unemployment, which has to be frontally tackled with the provision of 24/7 electricity to power industries and bring entrepreneurial capital back to Anambra State.

Your new party made waves in the last general elections before things ended the way they did. Do you think voters, especially LP supporters, will still be enthusiastic to come out?

Yes, I believe so. It is now even more urgent that more Nigerians join, work and vote for the Labour Party for the ultimate good of all. We have seen the Naira depreciation, the hunger and hardship in the land due to scarcity of food, the high cost of fuel and diesel and consequent cost of transportation, the removal of subsidy on electricity tariffs and the obnoxious high cost of energy. The masses are suffering.

Therefore, I expect more people to join the Labour Party to change the course of Nigeria for the better. Nigeria would certainly have been better today under Labour Party if Mr Peter Obi was president. So, I expect more determination and enthusiasm from Nigerians to change their destiny by supporting Peter Obi in the future under the Labour Party.

After the last elections, do you still think the Peter Obi myth can still work?

Is it a myth or reality? I am sure that everyone agrees that Mr Peter Obi would have assembled a better Cabinet to run Nigeria with; would have reduced the cost of governance; combated corruption like no other president before him and freed more resources for development.

The fuel and electricity subsidy removals would have been better handled with human empathy and provision of safety net for the very poor. The masses are suffering today. This is a Reality and not a myth. So, the Peter Obi reality is still relevant and the message will even be received much better today and tomorrow.

Finally, what things are you going to do differently from the way Soludo is doing them?

I will listen more than I talk to enable me to hear our people and serve them better. I will get more experienced people into Government at the State Level. I will conduct Local Government Elections and ensure that the youths are more involved in LG Administration as a training and learning platform for leadership at the state level. Under my leadership, the Anambra State Government will partner with successful businessmen to bring industries and much needed capital into Anambra State.

I will focus on security, will encourage use of gas from Omambala to provide 24/7 electricity to power the state and create a better health system for our people. These will create employment for our youths and better revenue for the state. I will not tax the very poor in Anambra State as the present government is doing with brute force. Above all, I will run a very effective development-driven government with human face.

FG ranks Anambra second lowest malaria prevalence state in Nigeria

    By Ovat Abeng

The Federal Ministry of Health has ranked Anambra State, the second lowest malaria prevalence in the Nigeria.

The Anambra State Commissioner for Health, Dr Afam Ben Obidike, disclosed this to journalists at his office in Awka on Friday while debunking a publication making the round that the State Government is not doing enough to bringing malaria scourge to a standstill.

Obidike urged the general public to disregard the information, noting that as it stands, the State has the second lowest malaria prevalence in the country as per the latest national malaria survey carry out by the Federal Ministry of Health in Abuja while Lagos State emerged the first.

He appealed to journalists to always balance their script before pushing it out for public consumption, quarreling that, it is unethical for a media practitioner to publish such report without proper verification and balancing.

It was gathered that the Commissioner was reacting to an interview granted to some Journalists in Awka, on Thursday by Professor Dennis Aribodor, a professor of Public Health Parasitology at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, saying that Anambra Government and some other state governments in Nigeria are not doing enough to bringing malaria scourge to a standstill.

According to Aribodor, the nature of budget for malaria control and prevention across the states and the federation emphasizing that malaria is one big disease that can be eliminated in the country, if there is political will to do so.

He said some countries of the world like Algeria, Cape Verde, Mauritius, China, Palestine and some other nations have eliminated malaria epidemic with steadfast political will but the reverse, according to him, is the case in Nigeria and Anambra in particular.

Obidike, in his swift reaction, described the news as fake, optimist that the present administration of Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo within a space of two years in office, has upgraded the health sector to International best standard via employment of over 5,000 qualified and certified Medical Doctors/Nurses across Health facilities in the state.

According to him, Governor Soludo’s two years in the office is quite eventful and worthy of commendation in view of his giant strides in all sectors.

“The governor’s exceptional performance has entrenched quality service delivery on all spheres of governance, especially, in Health Sector and brought dividends of democracy to all the nook and crannies of Anambra State.

Obidike went down memory lane, x-raying the governor’s exploits since inception of his administration and came to the conclusion that much has been achieved within just two years in the office especially in Health, road development, education and environment as well as youth empowerment and human capacity building.

“Within two years in office, we have had several free Healthy Living empowerment programmes of the governor’s wife, Mrs Nonye Soludo (Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo Initiative), free Antenatal services, where about 6,000 children were deliver free of charge at the state-own hospitals with only one mortality recorded, free treatment of malaria for pregnant women/children, free telemedicine services and the free distribution of mosquito nets to nursing mothers across the 179 communities in the state.

“Governor Soludo has equally approved the establishment of School of Nursing, to be located at Ekwulobia community, in Aguata Local Government Area of the State. He has also, in line with his campaign promises, said that he will build modern General Hospitals in all the 21 Local Government Areas and Primary Healthcare Centres across the 326 political wards in the state, all to provide quality healthcare services to the people.

“So, it is dishearten for someone like Professor Dennis Aribodor, a professor of Public Health Parasitology, to misinformed Ndi-Anambra that the State Government is not doing enough to bringing malaria scourge to a standstill, when the State has already been ranked the second lowest malaria prevalence in the country by the Federal Ministry of Health Abuja.

The Commissioner urged residents in the state to disregard the Aribodor’s message and continue to support the governor in order to actualized his vision of making Anambra a digitalized, smart, livable and prosperous state in Nigeria.

The Executive Director of Peering Advocacy and Advancement Centre in Africa (PAACA), Ezenwa Nwagwu, has revealed that the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, BVAS, used in the 2023 general elections contributed 98 percent success during the electoral exercise.

He said the BAVAS help reduce the cases of manual manipulation of figures in the electoral process.

Nwagwu, disclosed this while speaking at a one-day citizens’ town hall meeting on electoral reforms in Awka, the Anambra State capital on Thursday.

On the objectives of the meeting, PAACA boss noted that the sensitization meeting is to foster inclusive dialogue among citizens from varied backgrounds concerning electoral reform and constitutional amendment, enhance public understanding and awareness regarding electoral reform and complete and present citizen-derived recommendations to the National Assembly and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for consideration.

According to him, PAACA is organising the town hall meeting Nationwide including the FCT to educate the electorates on the electoral reform guiding the country’s election management process.

While describing Anambra as the least voting state in Nigeria, Nwagwu urged the stakeholders not to relent in sensitizing the people, mostly, at the grassroot on how election should be conducted in a free, fair and credible manner in subsequent elections in the state and the nation at large.

He also called on the people to familiarize themselves with the Electoral Act.

In his remark, the Anambra State Director of the National Orientation Agency, NOA, Mr Edozie Ajaegbu, noted that  poor political culture, absence of internal party democracy, and electoral corruption have continued to undermine the ability of the electoral process to produce candidates who can effectively represent the aspirations and yearnings of Nigerians.

He however observed that since the return of democracy in 1999, Nigeria’s electoral process has progressively improved judging by various factors, including citizens’ demands, Civil Society Organisations’ advocacy, legislative reforms, credible leadership in INEC, and International supports.

“Having actively participated in previous Nigerian’s elections, Mr Ajaegbu, represented by Mr Ignatius Obiora, said NOA, in line with its mandate of ensuring public enlightenment, mass mobilization, voters education and feedback from the public to government, have identified certain traits in voter behaviours and the electoral processes, which if not tackled, can slow down or at worse derail Nigeria democratic process.

“Some of the voter behaviours he described as worrisome include the issue of voided votes, the challenge of vote buying and selling, and the need for peaceful elections.

While commending PAACA for the bold initiative, Mr Ajaegbu called for partnership with other donor agencies to ensure that the goals of the town hall meeting are materialized, even as it assures PAACA and the society of her readiness to support enthronement of genuine democratic process in Nigeria.

In their separate speeches, the Ohaneze Ndigbo representative, Chief Samuel Nweke, ANPP State Chairman, Chief Martin Ameke,  ASATU youth leader, Ken Okoli, women leader, Mrs Ego Uzoezie and Frank Ebuka commended the PAACA management for organizing the programme in the state.

The workers who initially refused to file out for the usual match past which has become synonymous with the rally, said Soludo’s absence was deliberate.

They repeatedly shouted “No” to appeal for the match-past, insisting that moral was low.

Recall that last year’s rally dld not witness any match past, with the workers citing hot weather as reason.

Some of the workers who spoke to Journalists, described the absence of the Governor as a slap on the workers.

One of them who spoke in confidence, said, “The governor deliberately dodged the rally because of the long list of the workers’ demands.

“Sending his deputy doesn’t make any sense as he will definitely not address our demands.”

Another worker, a woman, said, “Workers Day is too important a day for any responsible government to ignore. What else could have kept the governor from honouring his workers?”

Though the march-past eventually held, but those who filed out to participate in the exercise, reportedly did to fulfill all righteousness.

The Deputy Governor who later addressed the protesting workers after several efforts to calm their nerves, assured the workers that their grievances would soon be addressed.

Describing the Soludo-led administration as people oriented, Ibezim assured the workers of better days ahead.

“Governor Soludo as a worker-friendly governor is aware of your plights. You will definitely hear from him soon,” he said.

Earlier, workers in the state have called on Governor Chukwuma Soludo to suspend the deduction of the contributory pension from their salaries to ensure industrial harmony in the state.

Presenting their long demands contained in a joint address by Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress, through NLC chairman, Comrade Humphrey Nwafor, workers expressed worry over what they called improper introduction and implementation of the contributory pension scheme.

He said, “From the beginning of the scheme, monies deducted were rarely remitted to the Pension Fund Administrators (PFA).

“Before the present administration came on board the state were deducting only the workers part of the contribution even without remitting same to the various PFA’s and refused to pay the Government part.

“The organized labour is dissatisfied with the continued deduction even after the reoccurring May Day prayers by organized labour requesting for the suspension of the scheme.

“We call on the Governor, who we believe is not only worker friendly but hate injustice with passion, as a matter of urgency, to suspend the deduction of the contributory pension from the workers salary so as to ensure industrial harmony in the state.”

Appreciating the governor over the N12,000 wage award for them and pensioners for four months, the workers called for the re-introduction of the removed wage award.

“We are also grateful for the absorption
of National light staff into various ministries and parastatals. We cannot thank you enough even for resolving the problems of Anambra water corporation and ANSEPA which lasted for over 17 years. Quality and timely information about Anambra State. Reporting Anambra responsibly to bring out development is our focus.”
