Anambra Local Government Service Commission denies diverting Soludo’s transport largess for workers

    By Ovat Abeng

Anambra State Local Government Service Commission has denied diverting Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s N20,000 transport largess intended for forty (40) workers in each of the 21 local government areas of the State last Tuesday during the opening ceremony of the maiden edition of the Commission’s week, held at the Women’s Development Centre Awka.

The Commission debunked the information in a statement signed and made available to Journalists in Awka, on Monday by it Public Relations Officer, Comrade Agu Chidi.

According to Chidi, the allegation was a plot by some enemies of progress to rubbish the monumental achievements in local government reforms, and Zero tolerance to corruption initiated by the Award winning; Barrister Vin Ifeanyi Ezeaka, the Chairman of the Commission.

He appealed to the public to disregard the social media circulation.

The statement read in part; “attention of the Anambra State Local Government Service Commission have been drawn to the Spurious and odious misinformation circulating in various electronic and print media to the purported mismanagement of monies given by Mr Governor Prof Charles Chukwuma Soludo as transport fares to LG workers when he attended the opening ceremony of the Anambra State Local Government Service Week; Dora Akunyili Women Development Center, Awka on 25th June 2024.

The Anambra State Local Government Service Commission wishes to set the record straight and to convey to Ndi Anambra and the general public that those allegations are false, devoid of any iota of truth, but simply the handiwork of mischief makers and enemies of Anambra State Government; bent on creating unnecessary tension in the State and whose intent is aimed at rubbishing the monumental achievements in local government reforms, and Zero tolerance to corruption initiated by the Award winning; Barrister Vin Ifeanyi Ezeaka.

“For the sake of clarity, Barrister Vin Ifeanyi Ezeaka never disbursed any money, but ordered that the attendees transport fares be shared to all the local Government workers at the Dora Akunyili Women Development Center, as directed by Mr Governor Prof Charles Chukwuma Soludo, and which was carried out with official dispatch in the presence of the Labour Leaders, including the State president of NULGE and all the attendees present at the Hall collected their #20,000 largesse together with their lunch package.

Therefore, the Anambra State Local Government Service Commission found it absurd e surprising that some uninformed disgruntled elements and agents of destabilization shall concoct such baseless allegation and lies against the person of Barrister Vin Ifeanyi Ezeaka (Esq) whose pedigree as an incorruptible personality and his impeccable record of zero tolerance for corruption and other related vices shines as  beacon for everyone to behold, the statement concluded.

The Paradise News gathered that the reaction was as a result of allegation level against the Chairman of the State Local Government Service Commission, Barrister Ezeaka, that he diverted the above mentioned fund announced by the governor during the event as some of the workers who also attended the ceremony did not receive the promised fund.

Blame FG for another long strike, ASUU tells Unizik students

    By Ovat Abeng

Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Nnamdi Azikiwe University ASUU-UNIZIK Awka branch has told students of the University to blame the Federal Government of Nigeria, in case the Union embarked on another long strike nationwide.

The Union made their position known when they joined their counterpart Nationwide to protest government failure to sign the agreement with the union over the past two years.

The leaders in their respective remarks expressed the Union’s readiness to embark on another strike soon if nothing was done to honour their agreement with the federal government.

Addressing a press conference at the ASUU-UNIZK Secretariat in Awka on Tuesday before the protest, the Chairman of ASUU-Unizik, Professor Kingsley Ubaorji regretted that two years after they were appealed to return to the classrooms, the federal government was yet to attend to their demands.

According to Prof Ubaorji “In the year 2022, ASUU was on strike for eight months, public universities in Nigeria were shut down, students were sent home because federal government of Nigeria refused to address ASUU demands as contained in renegotiated 2009 agreement which Academic Staff Unions of Nigerian Universities had with them.

“ASUU suspended the strike because our union is very civil, law abiding and has respect for rule of law. This is two years after, and the federal government has refused to sign that agreement with our union.

“To be honest with you comrades and esteemed members of the press, our union (ASUU), held an emergency National Executive Council meeting on Tuesday, the 8th   of June, 2024. Our union observed that the administration of President Ahmed Bola Tinubu is yet to engage fully, the union to address all outstanding issues with ASUU decisively.

These issues are: *Renegotiation of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement and implementation of the Prof. Nimi Briggs Report, Funding for the Revitalisation of Public Universities based on the FGN-ASUU MoU of 2012, 2013, and the MoA of 2017, Release of the 3½ months of the withheld salaries, Payment of EAA, Release of unpaid staff salaries on sabbatical, adjunct, etc., due to IPPIS, Release of third-party deductions, Implementation of UTAS in place of IPPIS mplementation of the Reports of the visitation panels of Illegal dissolution of Governing Councils in Federal and State Universities and Proliferation of public universities.

“As you are aware, many of these issues have outlived successive governments without any resolution, and other issues have been created by consecutive governments as well, like the implementation of the IPPIS, which came with the Muhammadu Buhari administration. Historically, the government has made commitments and signed agreements with ASUU, detailing timelines and expectations of both parties aimed at developing the Nigerian Universities as conditions for suspending any strike action. As soon as Lecturers resumed, the government and other stakeholders returned to status quo.

“ASUU would again start writing letters and reminders to the government, which were most often ignored, resulting in another strike action by ASUU.

It may interest the general public, especially Nigerian Students, to know that through ASUU struggles, Nigerians have enjoyed the following benefits:

    Regulated/subsidised tuition fees.

The establishment of TETFund and NEEDS Assessment funds that have sponsored critical infrastructural projects in our universities, including lecture classrooms, office blocks, roads, hostels, electricity, etc.

    Purchase of laboratory equipment

The implementation of a reviewed salary structure for lecturers (last reviewed 2009).

Partial payment of Earned Academic Allowance (EAA).

Non-victimisation of devoted union members and other victories were made possible by ASUU struggles and strike actions.

The 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement has been a recurrent decimal in all ASUU industrial actions since 2009. No government had taken the renegotiation seriously, but during the life of the past administration, negotiation came to a conclusion with the Nimi Briggs Committee. A document was produced, but the minions in the corridors of power refused to pass it on to the then President for his consideration and approval. Since then no tangible outcome has been recorded in spite of the constructive recommendations of the Committee.

“Our union, therefore, demands that all renegotiations of the 2009 FGN/ASUU Agreement be rounded off based on the Nimi Briggs Committee resolutions.

It may interest you to also know that the salaries of Academics in Nigeria have not been reviewed since 2009. That is over fourteen years of being on a static salary structure despite the country’s increasing inflation rate.

“Aside from the raging inflation, we invite you to compare the wages of our counterparts in other African countries and offer your judgment. It is on record that most of our bright students are turning down the opportunities to join the teaching profession simply because Lecturers in Nigeria are not well-paid. By the time we retire, who will teach our children?

Our Union maintains that based on the FGN-ASUU Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) of 2012 and 2013 and the Memorandum of Action (MoA) of 2017, the revitalisation of our public universities remains a top priority if Nigerian universities and academics would remain competitive.

“Our union insists that the work for which the government has withheld our 3½ months salaries, based on the ‘no work, no pay’ policy of government, had been done. Therefore, the government has no reason to keep the salaries of university academics.

The continued reluctance of the government in this direction is a naked invitation to a situation that may not argue well for university education in Nigeria.

“Our members are so resolved and strong on this and should be paid without any further delay.

It is worrisome and incomprehensible that the Earned Academic Allowances captured in the 2023 Federal Budget have not been paid. The union wonders at the illegality in not paying the EAA even when the budget year in which it was captured has elapsed.

“Nigerians should ask the federal government where the budgeted funds for university workers’ EAA are currently domiciled. We call on the federal government to release our EAA without any further delay, as the non-implementation of this aspect of the budget is questionable and verges on illegality and its concomitant corrupt practices.

“We observes the government’s failure to remit third-party deductions, including pension contributions and cooperative society dues. This is due to the incompatibility of IPPIS with the university system. We therefore call for the immediate remittance of these deductions to the appropriate quarters. Failure to release the third-party deductions is a clear violation of the Trade Union Act that governs the deduction of such funds.

The introduction of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) has led to unacceptable inconsistencies, including the non-payment of salaries of bona fide academic staff for some years and months, and academic staff on sabbatical, adjunct, and other contractual engagements that make the academic system unique.

Our union maintains that the proliferation of public universities without provisions for adequate funding and infrastructure does not auger well for our university system. Therefore, we call on the government to put a moratorium on creating more universities without substance.

“If the FGN sets its priorities right, all these could be resolved amicably, without any industrial action. But the truth is that the government appears to have been treating these issues with some fun, which our union finds unacceptable.

“As a union, we have therefore resolved to engage the media to sensitize the public on the failure of the government to address all the outstanding issues with ASUU. Our union remains committed to advocating for the rights and welfare of academic staff and the overall improvement of the Nigerian University System.

We, therefore, call on the government to take immediate and decisive actions to address these critical issues.

“We are also telling government and the public that if in the next two weeks nothing is done, ASUU is going to embark on yet another long strike and  the students should blame the Federal Government for that,” the Chairman concluded.

Also speaking during the protest, the  Zonal Cordinator of ASUU, Owerri zone,  Prof. Dennis Aribodor, lamented that the rate of taxation by the Federal Government on  the meagre salaries paid to lecturers was unbearable.

He urged the Federal Government to avoid a total shutdown in the Nigeria Varsities.

It was gathered that the protest was accompany with placards with various inscriptions such as; FG stop deceiving Nigerians, FG pay us 3-years of arrears and salaries, lecturers dignity matters, blame FG for another long strike, pay us fairly, stop suffocating University lecturers, support quality education, FG allow lecturers to breathe, among others.

“The creative industry is the second biggest employers of labour in Nigeria and we believe that once we get the young once, we will deal with unemployment.

The Managing Director of Anambra Broadcasting Service (ABS) Sir Chido Obidiegwu in an interview described SheddyJoe as a man with multiple talents.

Obidiegwu, the former Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Events and Protocol said his successor SheddyJoe is performing better than him.

“Apart from being an MC and a comedian, he has also showed that he has another talent which is music and we will support him. Every track in this album has a message. I see him as an evangelist.

“I’m advising young entertainers to be patience and work extra hard because the world is the survival of the most fittest. They should strive by going extra miles to succeed”. He concluded.

On his remark, ‘SheddyJoe De Entertainer’ while speaking during the album launch said going into music was a dream come through for him.

SheddyJoe, who is a standup comedian, master of ceremonies, musicians and civil servant stated that his venture into music and entertainment industry is to be an inspiration to teeming talented artistes who are not bold enough to pursue the dreams Southeast.

He noted that he joined the entertainment industry in the early 2000s after his national youth service but abandoned it to satisfy the wish of his father who wanted him to join the civil service.

The Anaku born artiste from Ayamelum Local Government Area of the state, said he left Lagos in 2006 to join the state civil service due to family pressure and lack of fund to finance his dreams

According to him, “the inspiration has always been for people to hear me and appreciate the talent God has given me. I love entertainment.

“I did not leave Lagos out of my own volition, my father who was a civil servant at that time insisted that I should have a secure and tenured job, he forced me to take up a job in the civil service.

“The take home pay at that time was poor, so I abandoned the job and went back to Lagos but my father and kinsmen read the riot act and I had to come back.

“That was how I joined the film and video censorship board department of the Ministry of Information and Culture,” he said .

Recalling his journey into the entertainment industry, SheddyJoe De Entertainer said one Keppy Ekepenyong spotted him during his service year and introduced him to Basorge Junior, a popular entertainer who linked him to Alibaba.

He said the entertainment industry could be used to liberate families economically if positively harnessed, adding that his mission was to be an inspiration to talented youths in the country and Anambra in particular.

“I lived in Alibaba’s house for one year. Alibaba is the father of modern comedy in Nigeria. I was with him in Lekki, thanks to Basorge who linked me up with him.

“Basorge introduced me to music and comedy which I tried to combine because I am a total package but I later majored in comedy and Master of Ceremony.

“My first major stage show was made possible by Alibaba when he organised a show he called “Buying of Shares’’ in 2005 where he gave every upcoming comedian two minutes to perform, that was how I started doing my thing.

“Music was tasking and required a huge sum of money for studio production, video, marketing and all that and I could not do all that at that time because I did not have the money and nobody to sponsor me.

“Music is my habit, I started long ago, my background affected me because we lacked the exposure that I needed to develop it,” he said.

‘Am calling on youths with talents in music, comedy and other areas of entertainment in the area to start pursuing their dream without minding the challenges in the industry.

“I want to encourage upcoming entertainers in Anambra and Southeast to be focused and determined even though the industry is still not developed here, the best time to begin is now.

“There will always be challenges, but will surely surmount it. I am setting the pace, I believe it will open doors to more people and I hope to see more upcoming guys taking the bold step.

“The title of the album “This Naija” is an advice to all to be truthful.

“For upcoming artist, dont wait for the right time. Dont be afraid. The best way to start is to start. Forget your circumstances. Just start doing something. A journey of a thousand miles. Put your vision to reality, don’t bury your thoughts.

“Anambra State government has been supportive to the entertainment industry and soon, the Solution fun city which will have amusement park, country club, water park amongst others will be ready.
    he said.

Chairman Planning Committee Mr. Chimezie Patrick Anaso in his vote of thanks expressed gratitude to all those who contributed in one way or the other in making sure that the event was a success

Anaso who is also the Chairman Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) Anambra chapter, commended SheddyJoe for recording superb and inspirational tracks.

“It is a battle we all have to fight collectively because once these transformers are vandalised, customers who are served by the installation will be greatly affected,” Ezeh said.

He therefore appealed to customers to join hands with the company to ensure that these facilities within their neighbourhoods are protected.

Tipper drivers to protest alleged N200,000 ‘extortion’ by Anambra govt agents

    By Ovat Abeng

Tipper drivers in Onitsha, Anambra State, under the aegis of Anambra Tippers Association have threatened to protest alleged forceful payment of various sums of money to the officials of Anambra State Road Traffic Management Agency (ARTMA).

The Chairman of the association, Ebuka Unekwe, who disclosed this to Journalists in Onitsha, on Thursday, alleged that ARTMA officials extort it’s members of money ranging from N200,000 and above under the guise of traffic control.

Unekwe said the ARTMA officials in Onitsha led by one Akachukwu, claimed that it’s men were instructed by the agency’s Managing Director, Emeka Konti, to collect N200,000 from each tipper driver operating in the area.

He lamented that tipper drivers are being extorted in Anambra on a daily basis, noting that the roads from where they load the sand are dilapidated and unmotorable.

Unekwe complained that due to the unmotorable condition of the roads, vehicles always fall and often create problems for the drivers, hence they resorted to plying Niger Street through Port Harcourt Road down to Upper Iweka all in Onitsha.

He said, “When we drive to Upper Iweka to connect the flyovers, ARTMA officials and some security agents would suddenly jump into our tippers. They do this every night and they compelled us to move into their park where they forcefully collect N200,000 from us on the condition that it was Governor Chukwuma Soludo they were working for.

“The ARTMA officials do not accept cash transfers but they insist that they must be given physical cash before any tipper in their net would be released. They are being led by one Akachukwu, an indigene of Ebonyi State, allegedly employed by the ARTMA Managing Director to act as their commander and ensure that the N200,000 were extorted from the tipper drivers and remitted to him privately.

“So far, between Tuesday and Wednesday alone, ARTMA officials have forcefully extorted N200,000 each from eight tipper drivers in the area. So this morning, some of us who loaded at Asaba and plied the road have been forcefully made to pay N200,000 to ARTMA.

“They demanded from each tipper driver in a day and on getting to Onitsha end of the Niger bridge, precisely at Port Harcourt Road, adjacent to a military checkpoint, they also demanded that we pay again. At the end of the day, we don’t have anything to show for our efforts as ARTMA officials collect everything from us.”

He said as a result of the continuous extortion, the tipper drivers have concluded to stage a peaceful protest to draw the attention of the state governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, towards their plight.

“We call this press conference to notify the public that we will be staging a protest anytime soon to draw the attention of the governor to our plight. Things are getting out of hand and it cannot continue like this.

“The ARTMA officials have become a thorn on our flesh by the continuous extortions. They have abandoned their core duty of traffic control and now are extorting the motoring public. Most of our members have abandoned Anambra routes.”

However, when contacted on the telephone, the Managing Director, ARTMA, Emeka Konti, denied the allegations, adding that he did not send any of his officials to collect N200,000 from tipper drivers.

“That is totally false. No official was asked to collect N200,000 from tipper drivers. We only asked the tipper drivers to stop plying one way at night hence they started the propaganda,” Konti added.
