Our position in Anambra LG’s election – APC

    By Ovat Abeng

In preparation ahead of the scheduled September 28th, 2024 Local Government Election in Anambra, the State Chapter of the All Progressive Congress APC, has urged the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission, ANSIEC, to extend the date to between 90-150 days to enable the party participate fully.

The State Chairman of the Party, Chief Basil Ejidike, made the called while briefing Journalists in Awka, on Saturday.

Ejidike said the called was necessary to enable APC as the major opposition party and other political parties in the state to fully prepared in the all important exercise.

According to him, APC is fully prepared to participate in the election, if the ANSIEC can extend the date according to the electoral Law to between 90-150 days, provide a level play ground for all interested political parties involved and as well review voters registration to enable those that just attained the aged of 18 this year to participate.

“We expect a maximum level of credibility and transparency in the process.

“We are yet to be convinced that Governor Chukwuma Soludo is prepared to conduct the local government election in Anambra State.

For instance, the 1st stakeholders meeting organised by ANSIEC that supposed to be for political parties under the umbrella of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) was hijacked by traditional rulers, president generals of communities and religion leaders under the directive of governor Soludo.

“As it stands now, gentlemen of the press, I can authoritatively tell you that APC under my leadership are of the opinion that the constituted ANSIEC, Chair by Lady Genevieve Osakwe is not fully ready to conduct the exercise in a transparent and credible manner.

“How can we participate in the election, where most of the concern political parties have not commence selling of interest and nomination forms for their intended aspirants, no stakeholders meeting between the State Electoral body, political parties and the security agencies to brainstormed on how the exercise can be conducted in a free, fair and credible manner. This is a massive signal that the election is based on personal interest of APGA led-government in the state.

“Though, as we all know, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s led-administration under the leading Africa Political party, APC support any State of the Federation who is bent to extend the dividends of democracy to the grassroot through the conduct of a credible and transparent Local Government election and with that, APC in Anambra State, is prepared to participate in the election only if, the Anambra Government and ANSIEC can conduct the exercise in a level play ground to all the political parties involved, review voters registration and to extend the date to between 90-150 days.

Ejidike however, warned that APC may be force to seek other options to challenge the exercise should the state government in collaboration with ANSIEC doesn’t change from the negative way and manner they are currently going about with the process.

The State Legal Adviser of the party, Barrister Chukwunoso Chumwuba, who also spoke during the briefing condemned the recent amended of local government law and that of the Anambra Electoral Law by the State House of Assembly shortly after the announcement of the local government election, noting that the action was inconsistent with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

  • Post-Mortem Examinations Key to Addressing “Slump and Die” Incidents in Nigeria — COOUTH Pathologist

Post-Mortem Examinations Key to Addressing “Slump and Die” Incidents in Nigeria — COOUTH Pathologist

    By Ovat Abeng

Amid growing concerns over the rising number of sudden and unexplained deaths in Nigeria, commonly referred to as “slump and die” cases, a Consultant Pathologist at Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (COOUTH), Prof. Chukwudi Onyeaghana Okani, has called on the Federal and State Governments to urgently employ more pathologists in health facilities across the country. This, he believes, will help curb this disturbing trend.

Prof. Okani emphasized that post-mortem examinations are crucial and remain one of the most effective tools for determining the actual cause of death. According to him, only a pathologist is trained to provide an accurate diagnosis that can inform efforts to protect the living from similar fates.

Delivering the 15th Inaugural Lecture of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University at the School’s ETF Auditorium, Igbariam, Anambra State, on Thursday, Prof. Okani explored the theme “Harmony In Healing: Bridging Life’s Journey For The Living And Extracting Wisdom From The Departed.” He stressed that pathology provides critical insights that not only inform accurate diagnoses but also contribute to the development of targeted therapies.

“Pathologists play an essential role in the medical field,” Prof. Okani stated. “We are often referred to as the ‘Supreme Court’ of medicine because our work provides the foundation for both diagnosis and treatment. By performing autopsies, we allow the deceased to continue teaching the living. The knowledge we extract from the deceased informs improvements in healthcare for the living.”

Prof. Okani further explained the importance of post-mortem examinations in cases where the cause of death is unknown, unnatural, or occurs under suspicious circumstances. He highlighted the dangers of burying individuals who succumb to “slump and die” incidents without a proper examination, as this often leads to counteraccusations and speculation among family members about spiritual or ritual causes of death.

“Post-mortem examinations are vital in dispelling myths and ensuring clarity for the living,” he said. “It is the only solution to the alarming rise of these sudden deaths, which have claimed the lives of many, both young and old. I urge anyone seeking treatment to ensure that a qualified pathologist is available at the hospital. If not, they should reconsider their options.”

In conclusion, Prof. Okani called on both Federal and State Governments to prioritize the employment of pathologists across the nation’s health facilities to combat this growing health challenge.

Prof. Okani’s presentation, which marked his decoration as the University’s 15th Inaugural Lecturer, garnered significant attention and added prestige to the event.

Unizik debunks reports of acting VC’s involvement in poor project management

    By Ovat Abeng

The Management of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Anambra State has debunked false reports of the involvement of it acting Vice Chancellor, Prof Carol Umobi in poor project management of the institution.

It was gathered that the House of Representatives committee on tertiary education had during their visit to the institution invited Umobi to the national assembly to explain some of the institution’s projects.

A press release issue to Journalists in Awka on Wednesday by the Special Adviser to the Vice Chancellor on Information and Public relations, Dr Emmanuel Ojukwu which revealed this, however stated that there have been erroneous information in the media, claiming that Umobi was invited because of poor project management.

Ojukwu said: “For the avoidance of doubt the House of Representatives Committee on Tertiary Education visited the university on Tuesday, August 13, 2025, and the Chairman clearly stated that some of the documents submitted to the committee were not satisfactory.

“The committee therefore adjourned its sitting and invited the University Acting Vice Chancellor and related officers to the National Assembly for more explanations and further interactions.”

The university said the projects being investigated by the lawmakers had nothing to do with the acting Vice Chancellor who was only appointed a month ago and has decided that since she had only six months to stay, would not embark on capital projects yet.

Ojukwu’s release stated further that: “It must be clearly noted that these projects and data were ongoing projects initiated in 2023 and earlier. The current acting Vice Chancellor Professor Carol Arinze Umobi was appointed by the Governing Council on July 22nd 2024.

“She has not initiated any new projects and is in no hurry to do so because she has a short tenure of six months to stay preparatory to the Governing Council’s appointment of a substantive Vice Chancellor.

“Even though the data and the projects for which she has been invited to the National Assembly were inherited from the previous administration, the current acting Vice Chancellor will honour the invitation of the Committee on Tertiary Education in the interest of the University.”

He said the acting vice chancellor commends the lawmakers for their visit and pledges total cooperation to the lawmakers to strengthen quality governance in the nation’s tertiary institutions.

  • How I survived attack by unknown gunmen in Anambra – Journalist Izunna Okafor

How I survived attack by unknown gunmen in Anambra – Journalist Izunna Okafor

    By Ovat Abeng

An Awka-based Journalists, Mr. Izunna Okafor, has narrated how he miraculously survived unknown gunmen attack in Awka, the capital city of Anambra State.

He said the incident happened on August 4th, 2024 at about 2am.

According to his narration, “My friends and I had finished a gathering we had somewhere in Awka, the capital city of Anambra State, which though didn’t start early enough on Saturday, August 3. We broke the day there, as the gathering officially ended at about 2am.

Awka had been revered as a ‘happening city’ where activities, especially nightlife, remain never go off, till almost the following night.

Being an Awka-based practicing journalist, I had also attended many other functions, meetings, and media-related assignments in the past, especially during emergencies and political periods, from where I safely returned home late in the night, even at such odd hours as 2am, 3am and so on, without anybody or group interfering with my movement.

These, and other heap of confidence so far built over more than ten years of my stay and practice of journalism in the city made me have less anxiety over my safe return to my residence that fateful Sunday night after our dismissal. Although I hear of and also write many news of the various crimes and security happenings in Awka on a daily basis, I never knew that the city had currently grown to be in its most unsecured status in the history of human existence.

So, as usual, after our gathering, I saddled on my somewhat new ride and mounted the road, after my friends and colleagues had taken their own direction. I was the only one among us going to my side.

And, as is usually the case, some streets were still on, especially the ever-busy Abakaliki Street (Club Road), as at that 2:09 am when I took off and was cruising to my residence.

It, however, became unusual, as I bent towards the direction of my destination, Off the Abakaliki Street before the Queen Suit Hotel, as a yellow-coloured tricycle (Keke) double-crossed me, with three ferocious and cantankerous men onboard.

That area is known for its quietness, darkness, and loneliness, especially in the night, and early hours of the day when the shop owners in the area are closed or yet to open for the day.

“Come down from the bike,” one of the boys said, brandishing a gun in his hand.

As I was trying to resist, question, and understand what was happening, the other one among the two persons who alighted from the tricycle drew closer and leveraged the tool of hot slap to order me not to waste their time.

As the slap was still echoing some bee sounds in my ear, the third person who remained inside the tricycle joined his voice to warn me not to delay them further; even as few cars that approached the area at that moment all reversed upon seeing the tricycle standing at the center of the road, with armed men standing by.

With courage and instigation that came from nowhere, as this was going on, I immediately geared up my motorcycle in a bid to flee, while one of them immediately cocked his gun, and the other pushed me down on motion, together with the motorcycle. And we crashed.

As I was struggling to get up, one of them grabbed up the motorcycle, saddled on it, and zoomed off in the company of the Keke, in which the other two had already mounted; and they sped off.

Immediately after the scene cleared, some people rushed to assist me, as they comforted me and stopped a tricycle for me, which I boarded in the company of some people, and was ridden home, after I declined to go to the hospital that night.

As I got home, and even while still inside the Keke, I started making calls, beginning with informing the friends I had just finished staying with before the incident, and then calling the Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Obono Itam; the State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ikenga Tochukwu, and some other security personnel I could reach on phone then, notifying them of what happened. I also requested their assistance in facilitating the apprehension of the hoodlums and recovering my stolen motorcycle — a ride that had been of great help to me in meeting up with my various journalistic engagements, both timeously and economically.

It was not until later in the morning that I clearly saw and began to feel the real pains of the injuries I sustained from the incident the time hoodlums pushed me down when I took the highly regretted dangerous risk to escape.

While I could not comfortably sleep that night, the following morning, as early as 6:30 am, I was already dressed up for church. But the pains couldn’t allow me. So, I had to begin finding transportation means to a hospital for urgent medical attention.

However, on second thought, I decided to trek down the axis where I had been attacked the previous night, though still making some phone calls and raising alarms.

Moments later, I was already at the Abakaliki Street. Lo and behold, a motorcycle that looked exactly like mine was dumped along the roadside.

“Could this not be my bike? Or, are these criminals relaxing and drinking somewhere around here in celebration of their successful ‘outing’ last night?” I reasoned aloud.

As I drew much closer, with some premeditated phone numbers in mind to call immediately if something strange was encountered, or if the men were drinking there; lo and behold, it was my motorcycle; abandoned, without anyone in sight as the parker.

What could have happened that led to the motorcycle being abandoned there?

The carburetor of my motorcycle had developed a fault a few weeks ago, such that it usually overflow most times when I park it, especially when there is enough fuel in it. This made me start locking up the fuel tap each time I park the bike and unlock it when I’m about to go.

Now, this mechanical fault has believably become my saving grace this time; little wonder why I had been reluctant to go fix it since about two weeks ago it started.

Now, before taking off from the venue of our gathering that night, I forgot to unlock the fuel tap as I usually do; and so, the only fuel inside the carburetor was what sustained my ride to the point where the hoodlums robbed me. Unknown to me and them, the carburetor fuel was almost finished, even though there was enough fuel in the fuel tank.

So, men and brethren, it was this remaining fuel in the carburetor that eventually finished up along the road when the criminals were fleeing with the bike, and then, the motorcycle locked up without any sign. Because they obviously could not begin to look for the fault (being a stolen bike), for the fear of being apprehended in the process; they disappointedly dumped and abandoned it there along the road, which was where I saw it the following morning, to the glory of God. This occurred just a few treks away from where the robbery occurred, implying that they didn’t even go far with the motorcycle before it locked up — a miracle I believe they might suspect to be a security lock, as it usually happens without giving signs.

Because I couldn’t find the key on the motorcycle, I rolled it to a place and parked it there; then went back home, brought the spare key, and started it, after having switched on the fuel tap and given enough time for the carburetor to absorb fuel. Men and brethren, that was how I miraculously recovered and regained the ownership of my lost motorcycle, all to the glory of God.

With that accomplished, the next concern was seeking urgent medical attention, because the various degrees of injuries I sustained on different parts of my body were still very acerbic, which include part of my cheek, part of my eyes, and limbs. Consequently, therefore, I mounted my motorcycle and hurried off to the hospital to take care of myself. And since then, I have been on medication till date, with many significant differences showing already on my body.

Many of the people I have encountered since the day of this incident have shown concern, empathy, and sympathy, but not without asking me what happened to me, especially given the degrees of injuries and scars on my body.

However, because of the blame I perceived would trail me when I should tell the people the real story, especially that aspect of the daring and highly regretted risk that I took by staking my life to drag a motorcycle with armed hoodlums; and because of my reluctance to be recounting the same long story to different people over and over; I decided to be telling them that it was just an accident that I had, whenever anyone asks me what happened after seeing the injuries all over my body. In fact, I even started this the very night the incident happened.

So, as it stands today, many people, including some of my biological relatives, still hold the belief that it was just an accident that I had, as I told them, without knowing yet the real thing that happened to me. Although it’s also an accident, to some extent; only a few persons I told know the true story. Meanwhile, some are not even aware that anything happened to me at all.

Howbeit, now that I have almost fully recovered; with appreciation to God, and with sincere apologies to those I somewhat lied to about that; I have finally made up my mind to tell the world the true story of what actually happened to me.

So, men and brethren, this is my story!

Join me to thank God, especially for sparing my life this time again, as many have died through this kind of incident and still lost the dragged item.

It is indeed a testimony and a great lesson to me.

“The Lord’s name be praised,” Okafor concluded.

A traffic warden who controls flow of vehicles in the area said: “Sometimes, you see them climbing the flyover and jumping down from that height. They constitute all manner of nuisance in that place, including stealing from themselves, passersby, and fighting.”

Commissioner for women’s affairs, Mrs Ify Obinabo said: “We are arresting this children, not to make them victims, but to use them to get at the syndicates that brought them here for begging.

“You and I know that Anambra has a low number of out of school children, and we will not stand and let this children remain in the streets, while being used by syndicates.

“They will help us to trace the syndicates behind them and those are the people that the law will catch up with.”

Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of ACTDA, Mr Ossy Onuko said the operation was planned in collaboration with the ministry of women affairs as a way to take children off the streets.

Meanwhile, it was a tough battle rounding up the street kids as they immediately fled as the enforcement team made to arrest them, with some.of them putting up a fight. They were however rounded up and bundled into waiting vehicles and taken away.

The Commissioner, noted that the operation will continue in all parts of Awka, to ensure that the town was rid of children being used by syndicates to beg for alms.

11 of our members missing in Anambra – Miyetti Allah alleges

    By Ovat Abeng

The leadership of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), has alleged missing of its eleven members in Anambra State.

Deputy Director General of MACBAN, Allahaji Gidado Siddiki, disclosed this in a statement signed and made available to journalists in Awka on Sunday while reacting to viral video trending online featuring two individuals of Fulani descent allegedly confessing to kidnapping incident in some part of the State.

According to the trending video online, members of the Eastern Security Network (ESN) have apprehended some Fulani herdsmen kidnappers who specialize in kidnapping people inside bushes and lonely places in Anambra State.

The arrested herdsmen kidnappers, numbering two, were apprehended over the week at Amanuke in Awka North Local Government Area of the State after they ambushed and kidnapped some land buyers who went to check a land at Mgbakwu, also in Awka North Local Government Area of the State.

But, Siddiki while countering the report via the statement tagged; “Condemnation of Stereotyping in Respect of Recent Viral Video on Kidnapping by Fulanis, and Call for Investigation”, called on security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and ensure that those responsible face the full consequences of their actions.

The statement read in part: “We are aware of a viral video trending online featuring two individuals of Fulani descent allegedly confessing to kidnapping.

The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders’ Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) unequivocally asserts that criminals, regardless of their ethnic or tribal affiliation, should be held accountable by the laws of the land. It is crucial to recognize that criminals do not discriminate between victims based on their background; they are driven solely by the potential for ransom.

It is important to note that 11 MACBAN “members have been reported missing in the same community where the viral video was recorded. Additionally, our members have suffered significant losses, including the killing of approximately 20 cattle owned by Haruna Mohammed and the disappearance of 13 cows belonging to Ibrahim Mohammed, along with the owner himself, in the same area.

“Our members have been legitimately and genuinely engaged in cattle breeding in this community for years. However, due to the deteriorating security situation at the beginning of this year, all our legitimate members have since left the area. The individuals arrested in this region are not affiliated with us; no one within our community recognizes them. They are likely the infiltrators we have been concerned about.

“We call upon the relevant security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into these incidents and ensure that those responsible face the full consequences of their actions. We urge that any Fulani or individual connected to these crimes be prosecuted to uncover any potential accomplices and prevent further criminal activities.

“MACBAN remains dedicated to assisting in the security of Anambra and the entire South East region. We also appeal to local communities to embrace us as fellow Nigerians who seek a prosperous livelihood and contribute positively to the country.

“Having lived in Awka since 1986 and raised my family here, I strongly oppose any harm coming to our people in the South East, Siddiki fume.

The State Police Public Relations Officer SP Ikenga Tochukwu, when contacted, said, “there is no such report before us.”
