    Anambra Govt Flags Off Integrated Measles Campaign

    Anambra Government has flagged off it integrated measles campaign across the 21 local government area of the State.

    The flagged off ceremony held at the Primary Healthcare Centre (PHC) Okpouno, in Awka South Council Area, on Saturday.

    Declaring the ceremony open, the State Governor, Chukwuma Charles Soludo, informed the people that the vaccination exercise is offer free of charge.

    Soludo who was represented by the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam  Ben Obidike said that the programme was a symbolic event to show that the state was ready to commence active comprehensive vaccination to preventable diseases which may cause harm to the children.

    According to him, the vaccination is free in all the PHCs across the state. We are encouraging people, particularly, the nursing mothers not to be afraid of visiting any PHC centre nearest to them.

    “The measles vaccine will be administered to children aged nine to 59 months respectively. Immunization officials have been deployed to all the PHC’s to ensure effectiveness and transparency.”

    Commending the World Health Organisation (WHO), UNICEF and other health partners, the governor urged the Immunization coordinator in the state to ensure that the vaccines are always available across the 21 LGAs health facilities.

    In her speech, the Executive Secretary, Anambra State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (ASPHCDA), Pharm Chisom.Uchem while also commending WHO UNICEF, and other health partners for their continues support in ensuring quality health care services in the state, announced that the exercise is scheduled for 2nd-8th November, 2924.

    The ASPHCDA boss noted that the essence of the Integrated Measles Campaign is to stop the spread of the outbreak, save lives of young children and curtailed burden on the health care system in Anambra State.

    WHO Coordinator in South East Nigeria, Dr Chukwumuanya Igboekwu, in his remark, expressed happiness that WHO has been part of the process in safeguarding and preserving the lives of Anambra residents.

    According to Igboekwu, the measles campaign is a promotion of Primary Health which is the foundation of a strong health system and the most viable pathway for health security and universal health coverage.

    “What we are doing here today, is a tri-partite partnership between the communities, the state government and the development partners, and before the end of governor Soludo administration, we will take the health care system in Anambra to the greatest position so that other states and other countries in the world can come and study what is happening in the State, the coordinator stated.

    In their separate remarks, the Chairman of Awka South Council Area, Prince Chinedu Okafor, represented by the council health supervisor, Hon Frank Ajezu and the Councilor, Okpouno ward, Hon Kenneth Okonkwo while urging mothers/caregivers to ensure their wards partake in the vaccination exercise, noted that the people of the area will key fully into the programme.

    They also promised to publicized the programme across the communities that constitute the council area.

    Ezinano Community Places ₦10m Bounty On Perpetrators Of Recent Killings In Anambra

    Ezinano Community in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State, has announced a reward of ₦10m for anyone with information that could lead to the arrest of those responsible for the killing of 16 people during the Onwa Asaa festival in Nibo community in the Council Area.

    It was gathered that within the month of October, 2024, attacks on residents at Nibo community, Unizik second-gate Awka and Okpouno community, all in the council area  have left about twenty five people dead-including some citizens of the protested Ezinano Community.

    The Community leader Ozo Chief Jeff Nweke, who made the bounty announcement during the Second Edition of Ezinano Day, a celebration of the community’s culture and heritage, maintained that such attacks cannot be justified, and the masterminds of the attacks must be unmasked and brought to justice.

    “To reinforce our commitment and seriousness on this issue, I, on behalf of the Ezinano people. wish to announce a ten million Naira (N10,000,000.00) reward for any useful information leading to the arrest of the perpetrators of these heinous attacks on our peace loving areas,” he noted.

    “We will not rest until justice is served,  adding” The Ezinano Community will not tolerate violence or cultism. We urge anyone with information to come forward and help bring the perpetrators to justice.”

    “Nweke urged residents of the affected areas to report anybody bearing firearms who is not a security or Vigilante personnel to any nearest security stations for prompt action.

    He further charged security agencies to leave no stone unturned in their investigation.

    In addition to the bounty, Chief Nweke also unveiled a ₦100m empowerment fund for local women, initially launching with ₦50m.

    The fund aims to support women-led initiatives and promote economic development in the area.

    “The empowerment programme is part of our commitment to building a prosperous and peaceful community,” Chief Nweke explained.

    He added, “We believe that empowering women is key to unlocking our community’s potential.”

    Meanwhile, Chief Jeff Nweke has hinted that he would hand over the mantle of Ezinano community leadership to another person before the end of December, 2024.

    The Anambra State Chapter of the Association of Professional Bodies of Nigeria (APBN), has inaugurated Chief Sir Raph Nwike as its new chairman.

    Nwike takes over from Dr
    Ulasi Okwuchukwu Joachin the immediate past chairman of the association and the current State Director of National Population Commission (NPC).

    The Chapter also inaugurated other new set of executive council members who will serve the association for a period of two years.

    It was gathered that the inauguration took place during the Association’s 2024 Professional Summit/Investiture with the Theme; “The need for government of Anambra to take proactive measures to eradicate the incident of building collapse in the state”.

    Sir Nwike, in his acceptance speech, said the new executive under his watch will promote cooperation among the professional bodies for social, ethnical and economic emancipation of Anambra State in particular and Nigeria at large, make APBN play active and visible role in the evolution of good governance in Anambra State, promote unity and networking among member bodies, bring the artisans and craftsman under the umbrella of APBN as to ensure proper utilization of their skills by the professionals and government in service delivery as well as to create public works platform for recruitment/engagement of qualified and registered artisans/craftsman for execution of private and government project.

    The Chairman urged the state government to synergize with the professionals under the umbrella of APBN in the execution of development project to ensure sustainability.

    He also appeal to the state government to assist the association with a functional service vehicle and allocation of at least two plots of land for building of APBN permanent secretariat in the state.

    Nwike noted that the newly inaugurated executive council members were respected professionals, who have made significant contributions to their respective fields.

    In his brief remark, the state governor, Chukwuma Charles Soludo who was represented at the event by the Permanent secretary (Office of the Secretary to the Government), Mr Nwabufo Nwankwo promised to partner fully with the association to eradicate completely the incidents of building collapse in the state.

    In his remark, the APBN President, Ismailia Muhammdu Zakari, represented by the National Secretary, Engr Dr. Sunny Emeka Ali, urged the new executive council members to be committed to uphold the objectives and values of APBN and also to work towards promoting the interests of all professional bodies in Anambra State.

    He also charge them to partner with the state government to curb the activities building collapse and quackery in the state.

    In their separate lectures, the guest speakers, Arc Okechukwu Innocent Ezeobi, Engr Prof Alkaolisa Celestine Ezeagu and Bldr. Kenneth Nnabuife Nduka, argued that the incidents of building collapse will continue to unfold until governance and ethical standards are followed.

    The event that featured award presentation to deserving members of the association, was also attended by the State Chairman of COREN, Chief Engr Victor Meju, delegate from Ossisoma Foundation lead by Hon Ben Obidigbo and representatives from all the 32 bodies that constitute the Association in the state.

    As the 12-month countdown to the Nov 2025 Anambra State governorship poll kicks off in earnest, the Chief George Moghalu campaign team has intensified her interactive meetings with critical stakeholders.

    The Director General of the campaign organization, Chief Okey Chukwuogo commended the Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Anambra State led by it’s chairman -Chief Uche Ugwoji, for honouring Chief Moghalu’s invitation.

    Chief Chukwuogo noted that though he was unavoidably away on a very crucial  assignment outside the state when they visited, he was informed that the interaction was very fruitful and beneficial to the polity.

    He reiterated Moghalu’s assertion that the 2025 election would be like no other ever witnessed in the State. That it has all potential to bring the best Anambra’s has seen or witnessed in the past.

    Addressing journalists at the Moghalu campaign headquarters at Udoka Housing Estate in Awka this afternoon, the Director General described Chief Moghalu as “a shinning example of political steadfastness, and masterpiece who has remained focussed in his political journey. And  that his ilk was what Anambra needs this time.”

    “He is the frontline governorship aspirant of the Labour Party, and I commend the membership comprised of State Chairmen of the eighteen registered political parties for the interactive meeting for rubbing minds on how to make things better in the political process in the state.”

    He admitted as an overstatement some media narration that IPAC adopted Chief Moghalu. According to him, “these are heads of different political parties in Anambra’s and hence cannot unilaterally adopt an aspirant or candidate of another party without the backing off their national headquarters.

    The State IPAC chairman, had at the meeting urged political actors to remain steadfast to improving the welfare and expectations of the citizens.

    Chief Moghalu had while receiving the members commended their cohesion and objective disposition towards his aspiration.

    He used the opportunity to formally inform them that he’s running for the 2025 governorship of the state. That its major reason for inviting them.

    He admitted being fully aware of the plurality of IPAC hence cautious in his appeal for their individual and collective support.

    Chief Ugwoji, described Moghalu as a distinguished colourful political bride that will make the remarkable leadership difference in the driving seat of any state.

    He urged the electorate to adopt wisdom when choosing who will rule the state.

    He pledged the cooperation and support of IPAC for a very peaceful, transparent, free and fair electoral process.

    That it’s the prayers of the 18- member political parties in IPAC to have a trouble free election to usher in the governorship election process next year.

    Ugwoji stressed that IPAC as a critical political was willing and ready guide and intervene, interact and meet with every politician, aspirant or group who is disposed to a peaceful political process or interaction.

    Soludo’s Wife Launches Healthy Living Gardens, Weekly Workouts In 21 Anambra LGAs

    Anambra governor’s wife and founder of the non-governmental movement, Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo Initiative, Mrs Nonye Soludo, has launched organic vegetable garden programme and weekly physical exercise across the twenty-one local government areas of the state.

    Mrs Soludo flagged off both programmes at Idemili North Local Government Headquarters, Ogidi, where the pilot projects are expected to kick off immediately.

    The Healthy Living Garden Programme is a community-based initiative where each local government will be supported by the governor’s wife, NGO, to start up their own gardens within the vicinities of the councils’ secretariat.

    The gardens shall be manned by trained workers in the local government areas, with the supervision of the local government chairman’s wives.

    Crops to be cultivated in the gardens include tomatoes, cucumber, carrot, cabbage, hot pepper, green pepper, pumpkin, sweet corn, beetroot, garden egg, scent leaves, curry, etc.

    Speaking during the official launching of the programmes, the governor’s wife, Mrs Soludo, said that the the participating local government areas will have till the next three months to start up their farmers’ markets where every harvest would be sold at a rate cheaper than what is sold in the conventional markets.

    She said that the farmers’ markets would be opened weekly across the twenty-one local government areas, pointing out that the intention is to boost food production, cut down the cost of common foods, promote agric education and support organic food consumption across Anambra homes.

    For the weekly exercise, Mrs Soludo explained that apart from building a community of physical health enthusiasts, she wished to use the programme to promote relationships and build a network of healthy living champions across the state.

    Earlier in his remarks, the Chairman of Idemili North Local Government Area, Mr. Stanley Nwoka assured that he would support the programmes to succeed in the local council and commended the governor’s wife for using her NGO to champion positive change.

    The Anambra State Commissioner for Health, Dr Afam Obidike, who is also the state coordinator of Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo, said that each goal of the programme is tailored to produce the kind of results that will benefit every age.

    The governor’s wife later toured the farmland that had already been mapped out for the garden.

    The state chairman of APGA, Chief Ifeatu Obi-Okoye, Commissioner for Information, Dr Law Mefor, his Special Duties counterpart, Honourable Beverly Ikpeazu-Nkemdiche, the Chairman of Idemili South Local Government Area, Mrs Amaka Obi, among others were at the event.

    The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr Olukayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has flagged off a two-day training of Schools Protection Squad of the Nigeria Police Force in Anambra State

    The flagged off training exercise expected to end on Thursday, 31st October, 2924, was held at the Prof Dora Akwuyili women development center Awka on Wednesday.

    In his address, the IGP who was represented at the event by the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Zone 13 Headquarters Ukpo, Anambra State, AIG Godwin Ndidi Aghaulor, said the initiative will help reduce security threats across schools in the state, particularly, at the pro-security areas.

    According to him, the initiative geared towards prioritizing, and improving security in and around our schools and learning institutions in Anambra State.

    “Our presence here today is a testament to our collective will and effort to support the Nigeria Police Force in promoting the Federal government agenda of prioritizing school protection in Nigeria, as this is one of the many strategic forums on school protection that has been initiated and ongoing in many parts of the country.

    “I use this opportunity to commend the Governor of Anambra State, His Excellency, Prof Chukwuma Charles Soludo, for his unwavering support and commitment to the course of school protection in Anambra State.

    “In our efforts to promote a safe and conducive learning environment, we recognize the vital importance of strengthening security resilience in our host communities. The safety and security of our educational institutions are paramount, and it is imperative that we work together to protect and safeguard our students and educators.

    “Collaboration and integration between host communities and security agencies play a significant rofe in fostering a secure and harmonious coexistence. And by coming together and building strong partnerships, we are proactively addressing the challenges and security threats faced by educational! institutions in our country, which if not done, can have adverse effects on the economy of our dear nation.

    “The Force has also embraced the project by establishing the Schools Protection Squad (SPS) in all the States of the Federation and the FCT, as well as the training of State Coordinators and Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) nationwide.

    “The good news is that the challenges we face are not insurmountable. | therefore commend the National Coordinator Schools Protection Squad (SPS), CP Lanre Ogunlowo for driving the Vision-Mission of the Force with dedication. And other stakeholders for their dedication and commitment to enhancing security and promoting education in our community through collective efforts.

    “As we embark on this important assignment together, let us reaffirm our commitment to working hand in hand, shoulder to shoulder, to ensure the safety and well-being of our students, educators, and community members. Together, we can make a difference and forge a brighter tomorrow for all,” the IGP concluded.

    Declaring the training open, the State Governor, Charles Soludo, commended the IGP for choosing Anambra to be the first state to launched the Squad in Nigeria.

    He noted that the initiative was in line with his administration to provide quality education in the state.

    The governor was also represented by his deputy, Dr Onyekachukwu Ibezim.

    The State Commissioner of Police, CP Nnaghe Itam, in his earlier speech, said the initiative will further increase the confidence the Anambra people have for the Police and other security agencies on in protection of lives and properties.

    While commending the IGP and his management team for remembering the command to be among the first, on the launch of the School protection Squad, the CP equally urged community leaders, school principals and other relevant stakeholders to support the initiative for a conducive school environment in the state.

    It was gathered that the event that was also attended by Traditional rulers, sister security agencies, Civil Society Organisations and the media feature panel discussion/paper presentation by Prof Chigozie Nwafor of the department of Psychology, Nnamdi Azikiwe University and has the theme: “Strengthening security resilience and integration of host communities in the protection of education.

    A sum of one hundred million naira has been mapped out by the Anambra State Government to reward winners of of this year, 2024 Anambra Innovation week competition, tagged; “Battle4Solutions”.

    The Special Adviser to governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, on Innovation and Business Incubation, Chinwe Okoli, disclosed this while briefing Journalists at her office in Awka, on Tuesday.

    She said the event expected to take place at the International Conversation Center Awka, is scheduled to hold between 25th-29th November, 2024.

    According to Okoli, the objective of this is to announce to you the maiden Anambra Innovation Week 2024 (AIW2024) slated for 25-29th November, 2024 in Awka and also to share insights of what Mr Governor has planned for this week of innovation and technology.

    The theme of the Week is “Creating the Future of Africa, Now’, she said the long week event is in line with Governor Soludo’s agenda to make Anambra Nigeria’s digital and creative capital.

    “The Solution Innovation District (SID), the organisers of the event is dedicated to developing a thriving ecosystem for digital talent, startups, and innovative businesses across the state.

    “Our mandate encompasses nurturing the “Anambra Digital Tribe,” supporting the startup ecosystem, incubating promising ventures, fostering research commercialization, and helping businesses leverage technology to scale through programs like LevelUp Anambra and Code Anambra, SID under my watch have trained over 25,000 youths on various deep technology skills preparing them for jobs in the global market.

    ASUU protests as Unizik appoints new VC

    The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Anambra State, has stage a peaceful protest to stopped the selection of the new Vice Chancellor of the Institution.

    It was gathered that the protest was as a result of the ongoing crisis currently rocking the University over who emergencies the new Vice Chancellor of the Varsity.

    It was also gathered that while the protest was ongoing, the selection was equally taking place by the University’s Governing Council led by it Chairman, Amb. Greg Mbadiwe at  the Council Chambers of the University, on Tuesday.

    Speaking to Journalists shortly after the protst , the ASUU-UNIZK branch Chairman, Prof Kinsley Oborji, call on the President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu to urgently intervene to save the University, named after one of the founding fathers of Nigeria, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe from total collapse.

    Prof Oborji accused the Chairman of the University’s Governing Council, Amb. Mbadiwe, of imposing a VC who is not a Unizik product.

    The Chairman appeal for a due process to be followed to avoid break down of law and order in the University.

    The protest was accompanied with placards with various inscriptions such as; Amb. Greg Mbadiwe respect our University, ASUU-NAU wants due process to be follow, ASUU-NAU says no to imposition of VC, Tinubu, call Greg to order, Vice Chancellors are not appointed in a hotel, ASUU-NAU says no to VC selection, among others.

    Meanwhile, the Governing Council of the University led by Amb. Mbadiwe has appointed Professor Benard Ifeanyi Odoh as the 7th substantive Vice Chancellor of the Varsity.

    Odoh, a Professsor of Geophysics is of the Department of Appplied Geophysics, Faculty of Physical Sciences of the University.

    Announcing the appointment after a rigorous selection process and interview of the 15 applicants for the position, the Pro-Chancellor disclosed that Odoh scored the 1st position from the pool of the applicants for the plum job of the University Chief Executive based on his evidence-based significant experience in University Teaching, Research and Administration.

    Born on 5th August 1975, Odoh hails from Ezza North LGA, Ebonyi State. As an Alumnus of Nnamdi Azikiwe University where he graduated  from the Department of Geological Sciences in 1999, he was appointed Lecturer 1 in the same department in 2009 after obtaining his Ph.D in 2008.

    He was a member of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU) Senate from 2010 to 2014. and also served as Special Assistant to the Vice-Chancellor (Academic Matters I)/Coordinator UTME Exercise, 10th June 2014 to Oct. 2014

    He was assessed and appointed as a Professor at Federal University Gusau, 2015.

    Odoh an Emeritus Secretary to the State Government ( SSG) of Ebonyi State has over 120 research publications published in reputable  International Journals, E- Books and Monographs to his credit.

    He returned to Nnamdi Azikiwe University in 2019 after resigning from his position as Secretary to the Ebonyi State Government.

    He was a Board Member Nnamdi Azikiwe University Confucius Institute and also Member of Nnamdi Azikiwe University Admission and Examination Monitoring Committee.

    He had also served as Director of Center for Water Resources Capacity Building Network for the Southeast   Zone, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, 16th August 2010 – Oct 2014 as well as Coordinator of UNIZIK Seismic Observatory Station, June 29th, 2010- Oct 2014

    He was a Delegate in Higher Education Administration seminar for Anglophone African Countries in three major provinces of China 19th October and 7th November, 2013 sponsored by Chinese Ministry of Education

    Also Member, NWRI-UNESCO stakeholders committee for the development of M.Sc. Curriculum in Integrated Water Resources Management for Nigerian Universities.

    He is a Member of various professional bodies like the Society of Exploration Geophysics, Oklahoma USA ,  American Association of Petroleum Geologist , European Association of Geoscientists & Engineers, Nigeria Association of Petroleum Explorationist and the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society .

    He is a Lead Research Consultant to Raw Materials Research and Development Council (RMRDC), 2024.

    It would be recalled that the newly appointed Vice Chancellor mentored and led NAU Team to 1st position among 26 African universities and represented the African Region in American Association of Petroleum Geologists Imperial Barrel Award (AAPG IBA) Finals in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA, 17 and 19th May, 2013 where they took the 5th position on the global arena.

    He was also Member of the voluntary visitors-Leadership Program for Newly- Appointed Nigerian Vice-Chancellors in the United States of America; organized by the US Department of State in Collaboration with National Universities Commission (NUC), 13-23rd October, 2010.

    APGA condemns reps Ikwechegh misconduct, assault on Abuja cab driver

    National leadership of the All Progressive Grand Alliance APGA, has strongly condemned the misconduct and assault meted to an Abuja-based cab driver by his member and the lawmaker representing Aba North/South Federal Constituency, Hon Alex Ikwechegh.

    The condemnation message was contained in a statement signed and made available to Journalists in Awka on Tuesday by the Party’s National Publicity Secretary, Mazi Ejimofor Opara.

    According to Opara, “The attention of our great party, the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) has been drawn to a viral video of alleged assault meted out to a citizen by the Honourable member representing Aba North and South Federal Constituency,  Hon Alex Ikwechegh. As a political party founded on respect for Human Rights, we roundly condemn the action of our said member and Federal Parliamentarian, Hon. Alex Mascot Ikwechegh, representing Aba North and South Federal Constituency, on the platform of our great Party.

    “As a party, we are founded on the basic principles of upholding the dignity of all humans irrespective of class, creed and/or ethnicity.  The recent video allegedly showing Hon. Ikwechegh assaulting a cab driver is totally unacceptable and runs counter to what our Party – APGA – represents.

    “In line with APGA’s constitution, the Leadership of the Party shall set up a disciplinary committee to investigate the act, and if found wanting, appropriate sanctions shall be meted on him in line with the Constitution of APGA. All members of APGA and indeed all elected officials on the platform of our great party are expected to exhibit the highest standards of decorum, civility and integrity in all public and private engagements and our party shall not tolerate any verifiable conduct that is not in tandem with the ideals of our founding fathers. In APGA we are our Brother’s and Sister’s keeper and it cannot be any other way,” the statement concluded.
