Mr Okocha said that MDAs faced issues ranging from improper record keeping, unretired and unaccounted appropriated and unappropriated funds, use of fictitious receipts, vouchers with insufficient retirement and improper documents to retire expenditures, undeducted and unremitted taxes, use of personal bank accounts, among others.

PDP Will Win Anambra South By-Election, Says Nwosu

    By Ovat Abeng

The People Democratic Party PDP aspirant in the forthcoming Anambra South Senatorial District bye-election, Prince Sam Ben Nwosu, has expressed confident that the party will win the election to fill the vacancy left by late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, at the National Assembly (Senate), Abuja.

Nwosu disclosed this to Journalists at his Ndiakwu-Otolo Nnewi country home on Friday, shortly after declaring his intention to contest the position.

Nwosu, a former Federal Commissioner, Public Complaints Commission in Anambra State, explained that his desire to give a new dimension of representation to Anambra South senatorial district informed his decision to run.

He said, “It is getting to six months now; Anambra South voice is lost at the red chamber. I’m going to replace that voice. I’ve made myself available. I’m good at service. I listen to the heartbeat of people. I don’t serve for what I will gain – my service is for what my people will benefit.”

Nwosu assured that he has the intellectual, moral and physical capacity to take over late Senator Ubah’s seat, and contribute meaningfully and uniquely to the development of Anambra South and Anambra State.

He also dismissed the claims that his political party has lost admiration in the Southeast and Anambra State – insisting that he has the capability to win the election on the PDP platform.

“Party vibration hangs around individuals,” “People love me. Our people want me. They know my antecedent. Once I pick the ticket – Once I am on the ballot, PDP will come together, and Anambra South will rally around me.

“Senate is not an executive position. So, anybody can win the election, irrespective of political affiliation. The people of Anambra South are going to decide who becomes the next senator. PDP, APC, APGA, LP and others are going to present their candidates. Our people will then look at the individuals – their characters and capabilities, and then vote accordingly.”

On the question on whether he can match APGA candidate, given the fact that it is the ruling party in Anambra, the PDP frontline contestant reminded that the ruling party, in the 2023 general election, lost the 3 senatorial seats  in Anambra, and noted that similar thing will happen during Anambra South by-election.

On whether he can fit into the big shoes left by late Senator Ubah, Nwosu insisted that he will never copy whatever Ifeanyi Ubah did at the senate; but will design a new and unique model of representation that will give absolute voice and control to Anambra South.

He also lent his voice to the call that Nnewi North should be allowed to complete late Senator Ubah’s tenure before shifting the slot to another local government area in Anambra South senatorial district.

Recall that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC)  has set to conduct a by-election in the enatorial district come January, 2025, to fill the vacancy left by late Senator Ifeanyi Ubah.

  • How I Was Kidnapped Over Disputed Land – Anambra Community Leader, Okeke

How I Was Kidnapped Over Disputed Land – Anambra Community Leader, Okeke

    By Ovat Abeng

A community leader and Vice Chairman of Obunagu Achalla village inEnugu Agidi community in Njikoka local government area of Anambra state, Ozo Ozoemena Obiora Okeke has narrated a frightening plot allegedly by some of his kinsmen to kill him.

He disclosed that at the center of the grouse of those after his life remains his dogged fight to prevent them from  illegal and corrupt sales of large acres of land belonging to the four villages that make up Enugwu Agidi town.

Speaking with newsmen at his country home, Obunagu Achalla, revealed startling incidents that led to his kidnap twice between last year 2023 and 2024, saying that it was God who saved his life, apart from payment of ransom to suspected Fulani herders.

Ozo Okeke disclosed that it was the evil scheme of four of his kinsmen led by Mr. Emeka Ementa and others allegedly working in secret alliance with suspected Fulani herdsmen to eliminate him by all means for being a stumbling block to their grand design to continue to appropriate parts of the land and sell same to highest bidders while the community and its people continue to wallow in abject poverty.

According to him, “My first experience was on October 17, 2023. It was the initial period the road in front of my house was being graded which they claimed that I sold the land to Ozo Jeff Nweke. This people invited the Fulani people to kidnap me so that I would bring out the money suspected to be paid for the land.”.

“I think this set of Fulanis are poor because they collected all my food stuff including garri, palm oil, salt among others. They discovered that I had only #22.00 in my bank account through phone and no other bank accounts. They wondered where the money they claimed that I realized from the land should be. They concluded it was mere allegation and I was freed.”

“The second invasion was in August 2024, after the peace meeting with my people, the Fulani kidnappers invaded my house again around 4pm that day and took me into the bush to Urum in Awka North local district before proceeding towards one shrine in Ukwulu. I stayed three days before they released me.”

But in a quick reaction, chairman of Obunagu-Achalla in Enugwu Agidi Community, Mr. Emeka Ementa on Thursday denied any link with Fulani herders to kidnap Ozo Ozoemena at any given time nor have any knowledge about the incident.

He admitted that the community at a meeting under his leadership agreed to suspend and ostracize Ozo Ozoemena and others for their sabotage of the corporate existence of the community by allowing with Ezinano Awka community on the controversial peace deal with Obunagu-Achalla village in Enugwu Agidi Community over their land.

“Well, I don’t have any contact with any kidnapping syndicate, I don’t even intend to. I am only saying that he (Ozoemena) should change his way of life; he has been known for this over years. The community only took normal cautions of the community to suspend him from our meetings and other activities. It was at a general meeting, not personal to me. So, I wouldn’t think and I never thought about that. Why would I kidnap him, for what?

“I have never heard of this kidnap of a thing. It is him forging this kidnap thing. It’s like a drama to me; it’s a forgery and I have not heard of it anyway. But Ozoemena has been known for this kind of behavior.

On the question of ancestral relationship between Ezinano Awka and Enugwu Agidi people over the land in dispute, Mr. Ementa explained that, “The land is called Agu-Nawgu because Nawgu people were living there before and part of it. After Nawgu was removed by the six communities of Awka, Isu, Enugwu Agidi, Nawfia, Amawbia and I think Okpuno. It’s a land gotten after a conquest and shared into six, everybody has theirs. Awka has their own and so are other communities.”

So, major part of that land is where Awka people are now contesting with us in court. The whole of that land, part of which of which is our ancestral land, they are joining both the ancestral land and that of Nawgu to the place they are dragging with us in court.”

“The court in it’s unanimous decisions gave it to us in three court sessions, the Awka court, High Court and Appeal Court.

“We are now asking the state government to use its good offices to intervene, because Enugwu-Agidi have suffered so much.”

Southeast Insecurity: Ojukwu Jnr Calls For Nnamdi Kanu Release

    By Ovat Abeng

Chief Emeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, the son of the late Biafra warlord, has called on the federal government of Nigeria to release Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra – IPOB.

Emeka Ojukwu Jnr,  who  spoke to Journalists in an interview said that Ñnamdi has been held and prosecuted by the State authorities on charges bothering on terrorism, and crime against the State insisted that  if Nnamdi Kanu is released the insecurity in the Southeast especially Anambra State would reduce drastically.

According to him “there has been   daily violent attacks on innocent individuals by criminals, with attendant high mortality which has now attained near normalcy, considering the development from the big picture perspective, the release of Nnamdi Kanu may not put an immediate end to the insecurity, but it will assuage the rising tension among the populace, who will then join hands to put an end to the rising criminality.”

While answering questions on conspiracy of silence by southeast stakeholders on the issue of security challenges in the area he said “I don’t think there is a conspiracy of silence. You know, first of all, security is a delicate subject matter and not what should be discussed for the sake of merely discussing it without regards to the implications and without a clear understanding of the differing but valid perspectives of the citizenry and the Government, especially those in charge of national security. So, I think that many people are just being careful so that their intervention would have the needed impact.”

Speaking on the constant kidnapping and killings in the southeast, the Warlord son said “it is sad. that nobody can, but condemn these atrocities in totality. It is shocking. However, I would not want to go into assessing the Governors. I have my impressions and opinions, but I will keep them aside because it is easy to be a backseat driver until you find yourself in the driver’s seat. Additionally, all actions taken by our Governors are not overt, some are covert. Rather let me engage the main issue which is that the insecurity in our homeland now calls for urgent action. Therefore, I am calling on all of us to join hands and put an immediate end to this embarrassment. Yes, I must admit that the Governors have major roles to play, but in the end, my predominant occupation is to see that this situation is confined to the dustbin of history, as quickly as possible by increasing the participation of our Royal Fathers, our Town Unions our Churches, etc and have a “whole-of-society approach” to the issue. Most miscreants are known within the various communities. It is also critical, in my opinion, that as we look to “punish” as it were, we should also be looking at the prevailing societal conditions that push some of our youth into criminality. We need more leadership and resources focused on creating an environment in which real opportunities exist for our younger ones to flourish. Our youth need to have a sense of belonging. They need to feel that they are heard and that they have a viable future within the society. How can we expect anyone who feels totally disenfranchised from the system, to  value and protect that system.”

When he was asked his view on the link between Nnamdi Kanu ‘s detention and the insecurity in the southeast , he has these to say” What you are asking, if I can put it differently, is if there is a link between marginalization and agitation or something along that line. Well, like I was just saying, injustice real or imagined, brings contempt, protests, agitations and a general feeling of “let it all burn!”, but that only comes when you feel disconnected from what you wish to burn down. Of course, I do not condone such actions but there are indeed genuine concerns that have not been addressed, and over time, these concerns began to find expression in anger as a result of frustration. To answer your question, it’s a complicated situation and that is why we must bring these conversations within a context. For instance, Nnamdi Kanu was not just detained. IPOB wasn’t formed today. By today’s realities, the Government, Kanu, and IPOB are variables in the crisis we face in the Southeast today. So, yes his detention and the subsequent protests for his release have given an opportunity for mischief makers, be they common criminals or actors from other segments of the society, to take advantage and pursue their own goals to the detriment of all. A clear understanding of this fact must guide us in finding a lasting solution.

He called for the release of Nnamdi Kanu unequivocally, noting that he is   joining his voice to make the call for his release so that southeast can make progress in finding a political solution to this issue.

“Let’s remember that the Judiciary has also said as much. However, I don’t think that Kanu’s release will automatically end the current insecurity. It will, however, open vistas of opportunities for honest conversations about how to restore order in our homeland. It is a necessary first step. There are misgivings leading to tensions and they are based on the real experience of the people. You can’t say these don’t matter if you are interested in genuine peace-building. So, yes, I am again calling for Nnamdi Kanu’s release, as part of the initial steps to restore sanity in the Southeast. Once the specter of his continued incarceration has been lifted by his release, then we can look around at ourselves and see more clearly who the good and the bad actors are.”

Speaking on Anambra gubernatorial election next year, Ojukwu Jnr said,” I belong to a particular Party in which I am a major stakeholder, so my default position should be clear. However, if you require detailed analysis, I have been busy with my life, my business and my family. Right now, there is nothing much for me to say other than what I have just said. I will need to pay closer attention to what is happening first. But let us hope that before the election next year in November, I will be better informed and then I shall give you a more detailed pronouncement on my thoughts on the electoral landscape,” he added.

12 Dead, 32 injured in Anambra Christmas rice scramble

    By Ovat Abeng

At least twelve people were confirmed dead on Saturday morning in Okija town, Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State, while scrambling for Christmas rice.

It is also estimated that over thirty-two people sustained various degrees of injury in the stampede caused by the distribution of rice organized by a son of the town and philanthropist, Chief Earnest Obiejesi, also known as Obi Jackson.

It was gathered that the distribution of food items has always been an annual tradition for philanthropist Obiejesi during most festive seasons, and is part of his foundation’s effort to assist his kinsmen, often culminating in a large carnival.

However, this year’s distribution was marred by deaths and injuries as the surging crowd became uncontrollable, leading to a stampede that has so far claimed twelve lives.

A son of the town, who identified himself as Uchenna, said: “It is not our brother Obi Jackson who caused their deaths, but the crowd that refused to comport themselves. The bags of rice I saw could take care of everyone and even more people, but due to the hunger in the land, most people feared that the rice might not reach them. This led to the tragic incident, and it is very unfortunate.”

Narrating the incident further, Mrs. Maria Okonkwo, who was heading to the venue, described the scene: “The number of people was overwhelming, and more people were still arriving to take part in the rice distribution when people started shouting. The organizers were busy trying to control the crowd, but there was little they could do as the crowd had overpowered them. Some people chose to carry as many bags as possible, and when others fell, they were trampled by the surging crowd, leading to the deaths of several individuals.”

“I cannot say exactly how many people died, but it could be around ten or thirteen. However, those who were injured are more than thirty, and about six people fainted.”

Efforts to contact the event organizers were unsuccessful, as none of them answered their calls, possibly due to shock over the incident.

Reacting to the tragedy, the Anambra Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochikwu Ikenga in a statement issued on Saturday Anambra State Police Operatives have taken over the scene in Okija, where an alleged stampede occurred in the early hours of today, 21/12/2024, leading to some fatalities.”

He said that the Preliminary information reveals that a known philanthropist from the Okija community, as part of his yearly tradition, distributes palliatives to the less privileged in the community.

According to him, unfortunately, before the event could start, a large, uncontrolled crowd took over the event area, resulting in the stampede.

Ikenga also said that although the details of the affected persons are still sketchy, but police operatives have taken control of the scene for a proper investigation. He added that further details would be communicated.
