  • Alaska man sentenced in armed robbery and deaths of couple who were killed in front of 5-year-old

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (TCN) — A man has been sentenced to 80 years with 20 years suspended for his role in the armed robbery and shooting deaths of a man and woman whose young son said “ninjas killed my parents.”

According to the Alaska Department of Law, on Nov. 19, Judge Jack McKenna handed down the sentence to 27-year-old DeAnthony Harris in connection with the 2016 deaths of Christopher Brooks and Danielle Brooks. Harris will serve 10 years of probation following his release.

Savon Wiley planned to rob Christopher Brooks on Dec. 24, 2016, by luring him under the guise of purchasing marijuana. Wiley’s accomplices, Lamarkus Mann, Jaylyn Franklin, and Harris went into Christopher Brooks and Danielle Brooks’ residence armed with guns to carry out the robbery of marijuana and money. The department of law said Danielle Brooks’ 5-year-old son was home at the time.

The armed robbers reportedly entered the residence and began firing their weapons. Danielle Brooks died inside the house, and Christopher Brooks was killed while trying to escape and crawl onto the outside steps. The 5-year-old boy told authorities, “Ninjas killed my parents.”

Franklin entered a plea agreement in 2019 and was sentenced to 100 years with 20 years suspended. Both Mann and Wiley were sentenced in 2020 following trial. Mann was sentenced to 109 years, and Wiley was sentenced to 76 years with 20 years suspended.

  • Mom allegedly left toddler who was found 'protruding' from window so she could go on a date

KILLEEN, Texas (TCN) — A 25-year-old woman is in custody for allegedly leaving her toddler unsupervised at home for a day while she traveled almost 200 miles to meet a man from a dating app.

The Killeen Police Department told “True Crime News” in a statement that on July 28 at 9:48 a.m., officers responded to the 600 block of West Hallmark Avenue for a welfare check on a child. Witnesses told police that a 16-month-old child “was hanging out near a broken window and an aggressive dog was trying to attack the child.” Police arrived and located the boy “protruding from the window that was repaired with a plexiglass sheeting and cardboard.”

Officers made entry into the apartment and rescued the boy, who was wearing only a T-shirt. He reportedly had feces on his skin and symptoms of diaper rash. Killeen Police officers looked through the apartment and learned the child had been left alone with two dogs.

KWKT-TV reports the dogs seemed protective of the child and barked at people trying to help the boy.

Court documents cited by KWKT noted that doors to other rooms inside the apartment were closed and the front door had been bolted. A baby gate also reportedly blocked off the kitchen.

Killeen Police made contact with the boy’s mother, identified by KWTK as Reese Myers, who said she drove to San Antonio the day prior for a date. Myers allegedly claimed she hired a babysitter through Facebook, but when police contacted the sitter, she said she and Myers had not spoken since December 2023. Police ordered Myers to return to Killeen.

Officials transported the toddler to a local hospital for an assessment, and Child Protective Services took custody of him.

According to Killeen Police, Special Victims Unit detectives presented their case to the Bell County District Attorney’s Office and obtained a warrant for Myers’ arrest on a charge of abandon/endanger a child. Myers was located and arrested Nov. 5 in San Bernardino County, California. Officials extradited Myers back to Texas.

  • Conservative group asks US Supreme Court to reverse ruling that allows Illinois mail-in ballots to be counted after Election Day

    From Chicago Tribune:

A conservative legal organization is ratcheting up its opposition to the requirement in Illinois that mail-in ballots be counted for 14 days after Election Day by calling on the U.S. Supreme Court to reverse federal court rulings that upheld the law because three Republican plaintiffs lacked the legal standing to challenge it.
The appeal, filed Tuesday by the organization Judicial Watch, also asks the nation’s highest court to clarify rulings about who has the right to appeal post-Election Day challenges, after many lawsuits contesting individual state results of the 2020 election filed on behalf of Donald Trump were tossed for lack of standing. Judicial Watch was among several groups that assisted Trump in seeking to halt the counting of mail-in ballots after Election Day four years ago when Trump lost to President Joe Biden.
By having the U.S. Supreme Court overturn the Illinois rulings and remand the case to the lower courts, it would allow them “to consider the merits of the important questions raised by the petitioner’s claims,” Justice Watch contended.

  • Va. couple allegedly stabbed, disemboweled man over 'botched' pizza order

NORFOLK, Va. (TCN) — A married couple was arrested for allegedly stabbing and disemboweling a pizzeria employee because of what they claimed was a “botched order.”

According to WAVY-TV, on Nov. 17 at approximately 2:25 p.m., Norfolk Police Department officers received a call about an incident at MOD Pizza on Premium Outlets Boulevard and located a man with several stab injuries. Medics transported the 24-year-old victim to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Court documents cited by WAVY allege one of the suspects, Catherine Harper, started arguing with the victim because she claimed he messed up her order. She reportedly contacted her husband, Corey Harper, and asked if he could come and “handle the situation.” When Corey Harper arrived, he allegedly began stabbing the victim. One of the cuts reportedly caused such a deep gash that the wound exposed his intestines.

Corey Harper and Catherine Harper reportedly then fled the restaurant but were later caught and apprehended.

Court records show Corey Harper and his wife are both charged with assault — malicious wounding and brandishing a firearm. Corey Harper is facing an additional charge of brandishing a firearm.

MOD Pizza said in a statement they were “dismayed to learn about an argument inside our Norfolk-area Lake Wright restaurant involving one of our employees and two guests.”

The statement continued, “Moments like these force organizations to re-examine employee training and look for ways to reinforce values and expectations. We are fully cooperating with the Norfolk Police Department in their investigation. Our top priority is creating a fun and inspiring place to work and a great place to eat.”

  • DOL Spends Millions to Reduce Child Labor Abroad as Exploited Migrant Kids Endure Brutal Jobs in U.S.

While it allows thousands of migrant children to be exploited working brutal jobs inside the United States, the Biden administration is spending $5 million to reduce child labor abroad, this time in Latin America as well as the Caribbean. Adding insult to injury, the millions of American taxpayer dollars will go to an offshoot of the famously corrupt United Nations that claims to be devoted to promoting social justice and the international recognition of human and labor rights. It is known as the International Labour Organization (ILO) and its African-born Director General, Gilbert F. Houngbo, says his life mission is to improve the prospects of the world’s most vulnerable people.

It is not clear how the ILO will use the multi-million-dollar U.S. grant to reduce child labor in Latin America and the Caribbean, but the Biden administration explains that the project will enlist government, employers, and workers’ organizations to address labor rights challenges in supply chains. Then the entities will utilize “negotiated sector-specific pacts” to tackle the problem. “The project will bolster collaboration among these pact members, build their capacity, enhance engagement with local community organizations and other labor stakeholders,” the Department of Labor (DOL) writes in its announcement, adding that the project aims to “increase worker voice throughout select supply chains.” Brazil is set to receive the most intervention because Biden signed a 2023 pact with its leftist president, Luiz Ignacio Lula da Silva, to empower workers in the South American nation and the grant falls under that category.

Known as Partnership for Workers’ Rights (PWR), the U.S.-Brazilian deal centers around countering discrimination in the global workforce, protecting workers from climate change heat stress and raising awareness about the dangers of hazardous heat exposure, among other things. Above a large photo of Biden shaking hands with Lula da Silva the PWR website explains that more than 2.4 billion workers are impacted by workplace heat stress, posing a risk to the individuals and their families as well as their communities worldwide. “Heat stress increases mental strain and other accidents and illnesses at work, as nearly 20,000 lives are lost annually due to the 23 million occupational injuries attributable to excessive heat,” according to the PWR. “Heat can severely affect workers’ mental health, leading to increased stress, anxiety, and cognitive impairments.”

Back home in the United States thousands of illegal immigrant kids released into the country by the Biden administration are performing dangerous jobs for low wages instead of attending school and the government does not seem terribly concerned. A mainstream newspaper published a scathing exposé last year that includes dozens of specific cases and shameful details of migrant children working in low-paying, hard-labor jobs throughout the country. The reporter of the lengthy piece, titled “Alone and Exploited, Migrant Children Work Brutal Jobs Across the U.S.,” interviewed more than 100 migrant child workers in 20 states and found a secret workforce in practically every industry, violating child labor laws established in the U.S. nearly a century ago. “These workers are part of a new economy of exploitation: Migrant children, who have been coming into the United States without their parents in record numbers, are ending up in some of the most punishing jobs in the country,” the article states.

Examples include 12-year-old roofers in Florida and Tennessee, underage slaughterhouse workers in Delaware, Mississippi and North Carolina and kids sawing planks of wood on overnight shifts in South Dakota. In many American towns children wash dishes late at night, the story reveals. Underage migrants run milking machines in Vermont, deliver meals in New York City and harvest coffee and build lava rock walls around vacation homes in Hawaii. Thirteen-year-old girls wash hotel sheets in Virginia. A 14-year-old boy works a construction job instead of going to school, a 15-year-old girl packs cereal at night in a factory, and a 13-year-old boy works 12-hour shifts, six days a week, at a commercial egg farm in Michigan. The list goes on and on, with the cheap—and illegal—underage labor boosting profits for both covert operations and global companies. Seems like the Biden administration should consider allocating funds to combat the crisis here in the U.S., especially since it created it.
