  • Army National Guard solider allegedly killed man who was in a relationship with the mother of his child

FORT EISENHOWER, Ga. (TCN) — An Army National Guard soldier from Louisiana stands accused of killing a man who was in a relationship with his ex.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Georgia, on the morning of Dec. 14, 25-year-old Natravien Landry allegedly assaulted and fatally shot a man, identified by WRDW/WAGT-TV as Army reservist Andre Stewart Jr.

Per a criminal complaint posted by WRDW/WAGT, Landry’s ex was in a romantic relationship with Stewart and said Landry “expressed prior jealousy toward” him. Landry’s ex told authorities she “awoke to commotion in her bedroom, where she and the victim were sleeping, and saw Landry standing near the entrance of the room.”

The woman reportedly turned away from her ex and heard a gunshot. According to the complaint, another witness saw Landry strike the victim several times with the firearm and shoot at him. Other witnesses allegedly observed Landry driving up to the residence. Landry reportedly asked whose vehicle was parked at the home before forcing his way in. Following the fatal shooting, Landry fled the home, the complaint alleges.

The victim was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced deceased from a gunshot wound to the chest.

Officials issued a Be On the Lookout (BOLO) alert for Landry. Around three hours later, Meriwether County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested Landry and recovered a 9 mm pistol. The U.S. Marshals Service took Landry into custody and booked him to the Lincoln County Jail on one count of murder.

  • Gilgo Beach killings suspect Rex Heuermann charged in 7th woman’s death

SUFFOLK COUNTY, N.Y. (TCN) — The Suffolk County District Attorney announced Tuesday that he filed an additional murder charge against Rex Heuermann, the man they allege is responsible for killing several women on Long Island over the course of almost 20 years.

Ray Tierney held a press conference Dec. 17 and shared the news that Heuermann is charged with a seventh count of murder for allegedly killing Valerie Mack, a 24-year-old whose body was found in a wooded area on Nov. 19, 2000. Tierney said mitochondrial DNA from a hair on Mack’s body matched DNA profiles of Heuermann’s wife and daughter. Additional testing showed the hair was 1.31 x 10 to the 356th power more likely to match those DNA profiles. That is reportedly “the most conservative estimate.”

Heuermann’s daughter is not facing criminal charges and is not accused of being involved in the crimes, according to The Associated Press.

Heuermann appeared in court Tuesday and pleaded not guilty.

Mack, who also went by Melissa Taylor, worked as an escort in Philadelphia and was last seen in New Jersey in mid-2000. Suffolk County Police said hunters found some of her remains off Halsey-Manor Road, while others were located along Ocean Parkway. Mack’s remains were positively identified in May 2020 using genetic genealogy, marking the first time a law enforcement agency in the state used this type of technology to identify a person in a police investigation.

Police arrested Heuermann in July 2023 for allegedly killing the “Gilgo Beach Four”: Melissa Barthelemy, Amber Costello, Maureen Brainard-Barnes, and Megan Waterman. The deaths are believed to have occurred between 1993 and 2010. In June, Tierney announced he was charging Heuermann with two more counts of murder for the deaths of Sandra Costilla and Jessica Taylor.

  • Florida man allegedly screamed obscenities, struck child 50 times with belt over missing couch cushion

KISSIMMEE, Fla. (TCN) — Authorities recently arrested a couple after a 42-year-old man allegedly beat a child for nearly half an hour over a displaced couch cushion.

According to the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office, on Dec. 7, officials allege Lance Rachel Sr. became upset about a missing cushion and accused a child of lying. Rachel allegedly punished the juvenile by “screaming obscenities and physically abusing the victim over the course of 28 minutes.”

Rachel reportedly hit the juvenile with a belt over 50 times, choked him, and called him “disparaging names and other obscenities.” The sheriff’s office alleges Rachel also threatened to break the victim’s jaw. Some of the abuse was captured on home surveillance cameras.

Detectives interviewed Rachel on Dec. 16 and arrested him on charges of aggravated child abuse and battery by strangulation. The suspect’s wife, Kimberly Rachel, was arrested on a charge of failure to report child abuse. They remain held in the Osceola County Jail. Authorities did not disclose the relationship between the suspects and the victim.

  • Former Calif. chef admits at parole hearing that he killed his wife and boiled her body for 4 days

CORCORAN, Calif. (TCN) — A former Southern California chef reportedly apologized at a parole hearing for killing his missing wife during an argument and boiling her body parts so she could not be identified.

California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation records show David Viens appeared via video for his parole hearing on Sept. 26 but was denied his request to be released from prison. Viens, who is currently in custody at the Substance Abuse Treatment Facility and State Prison, will be up for parole again in September 2027.

David Viens and his wife Dawn Viens had been married for about 15 years. According to court documents, the two had a “typical marriage” and “appeared to love one another.” They opened a restaurant in spring 2009 where David Viens worked as chef and Dawn Viens stayed in the front of house as a hostess and server. Dawn Viens reportedly drank heavily on a regular basis and did drugs, including with David Viens’ daughter from a previous marriage.

In October 2009, a neighbor reportedly heard David Viens and Dawn Viens arguing and Dawn Viens leaving the building. David Viens told the neighbor “that they were no longer together because Dawn did not want him to stay in the restaurant business. He also said that Dawn had a drinking problem but did not want to get help, and she had decided to go live in the mountains.”

On Oct. 18, 2009, David Viens told a friend he believed his wife was stealing money from the restaurant, saying, “That b–ch is stealing from me, and nobody steals from me. I will kill that b–ch.” The next day, Viens told the staff his wife “would no longer be working there.”

Some of Dawn Viens’ friends received text messages from her saying she left town for a while, but they otherwise could not reach her.

Later in October 2009, David Viens’ daughter came into town to help him with the restaurant. One night, they were reportedly drunk and driving home from the restaurant when Viens confessed that he and his wife had a fight one evening because he wanted to sleep but she “kept badgering him and trying to talk.” Viens moved a dresser in front of the bedroom door, but Dawn Viens managed to get inside. Viens reportedly tied Dawn Viens up in the living room, covered her mouth with duct tape, and went back to sleep. When he woke up the next day, Dawn Viens was dead from apparently choking on her own vomit.

Dawn Viens’ sister reported her missing Nov. 8, 2009, to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. A detective interviewed Viens, who said his wife left after their argument and he had not heard from her since. Her case became a homicide investigation in August 2010.

Detectives searched Viens’ home in October 2010 and reportedly found bloodstains on the bedroom wall and bathroom floor, though they were unable to be tested. On Feb. 21, 2011, Viens told his new girlfriend that Dawn Viens “was not coming back,” and he jumped off a cliff while police attempted a traffic stop. He survived the fall and was hospitalized.

In an interview with a detective, Viens said he “snapped” when he caught his wife stealing money, so he tied her up. When he woke up and saw her dead, he placed her body in a closet. Then, he put her in a garbage bag and left her in a dumpster.

In a second interview, Viens revealed his plan of “cleaning the grease traps” and placed her body in a “large vat of boiling water and slowly cooked it for four days.” After that, he mixed her remains with grease, placed them in trash bags, and disposed of them. He kept Dawn Viens’ skull and hid it in his mother’s attic.

Viens went to trial and a jury convicted him second-degree murder. He was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison. He appealed the conviction, but the higher court affirmed the verdict.

According to parole hearing transcripts obtained by the Daily Breeze, Viens apologized for his actions, saying, “I extend my deepest apologies to all of my victims who have been and continue to suffer because of my selfish and destructive actions, especially to my wife, Dawn. I apologize sincerely for murdering Dawn and then callously lying about it. I wish that I could reverse the pain I have caused and bring her back to you.”

Viens reportedly claimed he “wasn’t trying to murder her.” Rather, he was “in a drunken rage in the cycle of domestic violence.” He described himself as “horrible, ashamed, deplorable” following the killing.

The Daily Breeze reports Viens credited therapy in prison for coming to terms with his actions.

He reportedly told the parole board, “For the longest time, I had convinced myself through denial that this was an accident. But now that I understand that I was an abuser, that I was horrible, that I’m responsible for this.”

He continued, “I’m ashamed of what I’ve done, but at least I’m not lying about it. I know that the family needs closure. I didn’t have any diabolical plan to do this. I was in a panic and fear, and I regret doing it.”

Dawn Viens’ family, however, does not believe his remorse is genuine.

Her sister said, “He’s already given us several different stories about the events of that night. I think he probably has been plotting the right things to say so he gets out of jail.”

Her brother added, “I think if he’s trying to get penance for telling the truth or not telling the truth, I don’t believe a word he says.”

Even one of the parole board commissioners echoed the family’s sentiments. Emily Sheffield told Viens, “This was an incredibly callous and calculated crime. Over the course of days, you disposed of your wife’s body — dear wife of 17 years — in a grotesque manner. And you did also continue to make the choice every day to lie to your family about Dawn’s whereabouts.”

  • 3 dead, including juvenile suspect, in shooting at Wisconsin Christian school

Update (12/16/2024): In an afternoon press conference, Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes confirmed the deceased victims include the teen suspect, a teen student, and a teacher. Two students are in critical condition with life-threatening injuries and four others are at area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

Officials did not release the name or gender of the suspect, but detectives are working to determine motivation and gather additional information. There are no other threats to the community.

According to Barnes, police recovered a handgun at the scene. The shooting was confined to one area, but he did not know if it occurred in a classroom or hallway.

The shooter’s cause of death will be determined by the medical examiner, but the shooter was deceased by the time police arrived. No officer fired their weapon, according to Barnes.

Barnes said, “I think we can all agree that enough is enough. We have to come together to do everything we can to support our students, to prevent press conferences like these from happening again and again and again.”

Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway urged anyone who needs mental health support to contact 9-8-8, the Suicide and Crisis Lifetime.

MADISON, Wis. (TCN) — Several people are dead and injured after a juvenile opened fire at a local Christian school on Monday morning.

According to Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes, on Monday, Dec. 16, at 10:57 a.m., officers responded to a call about a shooting at Abundant Life Christian School and found multiple victims suffering from gunshot wounds. Police immediately rendered lifesaving efforts on wounded victims, whose injuries ranged from minor to life-threatening. Officers also located a juvenile they “believe was responsible” for the shooting.

Madison Police confirmed three people are deceased and six are injured, though it was not clear if the victims are students or teachers. Officials are still working to contact families before releasing identities.

Barnes explained his officers train for shootings like this every quarter, with the most recent one occurring about two weeks ago. He said, “Protocol is simple: stop the killing, stop the dying, find out who’s doing it. The officers did that.”

Barnes said he is “feeling dismayed” about the situation, especially with it occurring so close to Christmas and the holidays.

Abundant Life Christian School includes students from kindergarten to 12th grade. Police believe the shooter was a student at the school.

Barnes shared at the press conference, “Every person in that building is a victim and will be a victim forever. This type of trauma does not just go away.”

This is a breaking news story and will continue to be updated.

  • Afghanistan Gets $122.5 Mil to Combat Gender-Based Violence under Taliban with no Follow Up

In the latest scandal to rock the Biden administration’s massive Afghanistan aid boondoggle, the U.S. government has been derelict in its duty to measure the effectiveness of a $122.5 million investment to combat gender-based violence (GBV) in the Islamic nation after the Taliban took over, according to a federal audit. The investigation, conducted by the Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR), also reveals that the administration failed in this case to follow government practices for monitoring implementation of its foreign assistance award. That includes collecting required progress reports, validating the data in those reports through site visits and other verification means and assessing the periodic performance reports of groups receiving taxpayer dollars to implement programs. Additionally, the State Department, the agency disbursing the cash, did not even “include any goals for preventing and responding to GBV in Afghanistan,” investigators found.

Since the abrupt 2021 U.S. military withdraw, nearly $3 billion in humanitarian aid has flowed to Afghanistan and a chunk of it has gone to the Taliban, the terrorist group that currently runs the country. Judicial Watch has reported on this extensively, documenting hundreds of millions of dollars in American aid going to the Taliban this year alone. This occurs because the State Department fails to properly vet award recipients to comply with its own counterterrorism partner vetting requirements in Afghanistan and the money has gone to dozens of local entities with potential terrorist ties. The agency has a system to identify whether prospective awardees have a record of ethical business practices and is supposed to conduct a risk assessment to determine if programming funds may benefit terrorists or terrorist-affiliates before distributing American taxpayer dollars. But the State Department does not bother and fails to keep proper records.

The Taliban has also received a substantial portion of American aid by creating fake nonprofits that go unvetted by the U.S. government. Specifically, the Taliban is benefiting from American education funding through the establishment of fraudulent non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to receive donor assistance. Since the terrorist group returned to power in August 2021, Uncle Sam has continued to fund Afghanistan’s education sector through six programs that cost $185.2 million even though the Taliban has issued decrees drastically limiting access to education for girls and women as well as restricting women’s ability to work and other basic freedoms. The extremist group has also infiltrated local NGOs delivering educational assistance by targeting and extorting Afghans who receive monetary support from U.S.-funded education programs under the guise of taxation. NGOs are also coerced to hire Taliban supporters or purchase goods from Taliban-owned companies.

There is no telling where the hundreds of millions of dollars for gender-based violence have gone, and the feds do not seem terribly concerned about it. Since October 2020, the U.S. has spent $237 million on 31 GBV-related programs in Afghanistan, with more than half of it—$122.5 million—doled out after the collapse of the Afghan government between September 2021 and October 2022. More than two years after the Taliban took over, the audit confirms that the U.S. government has not updated its strategies to assure the programs succeed under terrorist rulers. Prior to the abrupt U.S. military withdraw the former Afghan government with the help of American support established the Ministry of Women’s Affairs and enacted the Elimination of Violence Against Women criminalizing rape in Afghanistan for the first time and numerous other acts of violence against women, including forced marriage, underage marriage, and giving away women and girls as restitution for crimes. The Taliban has killed most of the reforms, according to human rights groups cited in the report. “For example, the Ministry of Women’s Affairs no longer exists, the 2009 Elimination of Violence Against Women law is largely unenforced or ignored, and nearly all 30 women’s shelters that were still open in September 2021 to support and care for GBV survivors are closed,” SIGAR writes.

Yet the U.S. taxpayer dollars keep flowing, even though the State Department’s Special Envoy for Afghan Women, Girls, and Human Rights confirms the Taliban wants to erase Afghan women and girls from society, prohibiting them from accessing education or working in most sectors, restricting freedom of movement, and effectively banning them from public. “Those who raise their voices to protest or resist risk harassment, detention, and violence,” the probe found.

  • Mississippi babysitter who beat 2-year-old boy to death is sentenced

CORINTH, Miss. (TCN) — A 25-year-old former babysitter will spend the rest of her life behind bars for abusing two young children in her care, causing the death of one of them.

The First Circuit District Attorney’s Office announced Dec. 13 that Makallie Durham pleaded guilty to capital murder and four counts of felonious child abuse. A judge subsequently sentenced her to life in prison with an additional 40 years without the possibility of parole.

According to an initial press release from the Alcorn County Sheriff’s Office, on the night of Sept. 13, 2022, deputies and emergency medical personnel responded to a home to a report of an unresponsive child. First responders located a 2-year-old boy with multiple bruises and marks, as well as an 11-month-old girl, and they were transported to a hospital.

According to the sheriff’s office, during the investigation, Durham was taken into custody for a misdemeanor warrant. On Sept. 15, the 2-year-old boy succumbed to his injuries. The girl was in stable condition.

Investigators determined Durham hit the boy “in the face or head” on Sept. 9, 12, and 13, 2022, which led to his death, the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal reports. The defendant also reportedly beat the girl for three days straight around the same timeframe.

  • Texas man arrested for allegedly setting house on fire with 3 kids inside

FULSHEAR, Texas (TCN) — A 46-year-old man is suspected of attempted murder for allegedly “intentionally” setting his home on fire while his three children were still inside.

According to the Fulshear Police Department, on Nov. 6, police and firefighters responded to a house fire on Eldorado Lane and encountered two juveniles with minor injuries who said a 3-year-old was still inside. Officers heard “faint sounds from within the home” and entered through a bedroom window to save the toddler. Police said the 3-year-old suffered from severe smoke inhalation, so they were airlifted to a nearby hospital. The child has since been released.

The children’s father, Pedro Pulgar, was also taken to a hospital for “extensive injuries.” He was discharged Dec. 12 and subsequently arrested on three counts of attempted murder. A judge set his bond at $750,000 for each count, making it a total bond of $2.25 million.

Jail records show Pulgar is also facing a charge of arson.
