  • Ohio man accused of shooting daughter’s boyfriend during argument about dirt bike parts

BROWN COUNTY, Ohio (TCD) — Deputies arrested a 52-year-old man on suspicion of shooting and injuring his daughter’s 28-year-old boyfriend during a dispute about dirt bike parts over the weekend.

On Saturday, Dec. 16, shortly after 1:30 a.m., the Brown County Sheriff’s Office responded the area of Bradley Drive and State Route 125 just south of Russellville, Ohio, to a report of a man who had been shot in the foot. Once there, deputies found the victim, Cody Henderson, and he told them an “altercation ensued over a disagreement over dirt bike parts.”

According to the sheriff’s office, Henderson and the suspect, Bruce Haddix, got into a physical fight before Haddix pulled out a 9 mm handgun and “chased Mr. Henderson to his vehicle” outside Haddix’s home. Haddix allegedly shot multiple rounds toward Henderson and struck his car, and the victim fled on foot.

Haddix reportedly went inside his home, and a hostage negotiator eventually convinced him to exit. Brown County tactical team members then took Haddix into custody hours later, at around 4:15 a.m.

Haddix remains held in the Brown County Jail on a charge of felonious assault. His bail was set at $75,000, records show.

According to the sheriff’s office, the investigation is ongoing and additional charges are likely. Deputies did not disclose the victim’s current condition.

  • Man accused of killing 4 people allegedly lured them by telling them they’d dig up gold

SEATTLE (TCD) — A man who was arrested two years ago on suspicion of killing a woman has been charged with three additional counts of murder after he allegedly lured victims into the woods by telling them he wanted their help to dig up stolen gold.

The Associated Press reports the King County Prosecutor’s Office charged Richard Bradley Jr. with allegedly killing Michael Goeman, his son Vance Lakey, and Emilio Maturin. He has already been charged on suspicion of killing Brandi Blake, who died from blunt force trauma. Bradley was reportedly just weeks away from heading to court for Blake’s murder trial.

Blake went missing May 5, 2021, after she allegedly met up with Bradley and his wife at a hotel because Bradley purportedly asked her to help sell some gold he stole, according to the Federal Way Mirror. Blake and Bradley reportedly drove to a Walgreens in her Mustang. Later that day, Bradley reportedly drove her car to a hotel, but she was not in the vehicle with him.

Blake won $20,000 from a casino shortly before she disappeared. On May 21, 2021, police executed a search warrant at Bradley’s RV and uncovered several pounds of drugs, three guns, 1,000 Percocet pills, and a receipt from the Walgreens he and Blake went to. Five days later, investigators discovered Blake’s body “face-down in a shallow, poorly covered grave.”

The Federal Way Mirror reports detectives found a pickax, shovel, and hotel room key near Blake’s body.

Court documents cited by The Associated Press say Maturin’s girlfriend told police she heard Bradley talk to Maturin because he “needed help digging up some buried gold in Auburn.” Maturin was allegedly carrying $15,000 in cash when he disappeared in July 2019.

Investigators also discovered three ribs about 30 feet from Blake’s body. Those remains were later identified as Maturin’s.

Goeman and Lakey were fatally shot in March 2021, and their bodies were found close to the same park where Blake and Maturin’s remains were located. Goeman reportedly came into a large amount of money not long before he and his son were killed. According to the Federal Way Mirror, Goeman and Lakey both sustained gunshot wounds to the head.

Prosecutors reportedly believe Bradley convinced the victims to come to the woods to dig up gold, killed them, and stole their vehicles.

Bradley is also facing arson and firearms charges.

  • NBA G League player, girlfriend accused of killing missing woman and leaving her body in desert

LAS VEGAS (TCD) — A 27-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman were arrested over the weekend for allegedly “executing a murder plan” by killing a missing woman whose body was later found in the desert.

According to the Las Vegas Metro Police Department, on Dec. 7 at 3:32 p.m., two people walked into a substation and reported Marayna Rodgers missing. Rodgers was reportedly last seen with friends on Dec. 5, though she had a “prearranged meeting” with Sakari Harnden and Hamden’s boyfriend, Chance Comanche. Rodgers was not seen after that.

Detectives investigating the case reportedly believed from the start that foul play was likely involved in Rodgers’ disappearance. Harnden was arrested Dec. 13 on a charge of kidnapping, while Comanche was taken into custody Dec. 15 in Sacramento by the California FBI Criminal Apprehension Team.

Las Vegas Metro Police said detectives gathered information that led them to the desert in Henderson, where they found human remains that were positively identified as belonging to Rodgers.

Police allege Comanche and Harnden killed Rodgers, so they will now be charged with open murder.

Comanche played in the NBA G League for the Stockton Kings, which are affiliated with the Sacramento Kings. In a statement Dec. 15, the Stockton Kings said they released Comanche from their team.

Court records show Harnden is being charged with buying, possessing, or receiving stolen property in addition to open murder and kidnapping, while Comanche faces another charge of conspiracy to commit murder.

  • Dad who said, 'If I can’t have them, neither can you' pleads guilty to drowning his 3 kids

LAKE COUNTY, Ill. (TCD) — A 36-year-old man will spend the rest of his life in prison after he pleaded guilty but mentally ill to killing his three children, who were all under the age of 5.

WGN-TV reports Jason Karels entered the guilty plea Friday, Dec. 15. Lake County Superior Court records show prosecutors dropped several other murder charges against him in exchange for his plea to three counts of murder.

In a statement following the decision, Lake County State Attorney Eric Rinehart announced Karels’ life sentence, which will be served in the Illinois Department of Corrections, and said his office will “continue supporting this family through this heart-wrenching case.”

On June 13, 2022, at 1:40 p.m., Round Lake Beach Police Department officers were asked to conduct a welfare check at a home on the 200 block of East Camden Lane. When they got to the residence, they located the three young victims. The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office said the children’s mother discovered them deceased inside and called police.

The three victims were 2, 3, and 5 years old. The Lake County Coroner’s Office confirmed they all drowned.

At the scene, police officers found a note Karels wrote that said, “If I can’t have them, neither can you.”

Illinois State Troopers arrested Karels the same day after a 17-minute car pursuit. Karels crashed his vehicle and reportedly “made statements to police officers regarding his role in the triple homicide.”

The state attorney’s office filed murder charges against Karels on June 14, 2022, and he initially pleaded not guilty.

According to WGN, Karels’ estranged wife was in the midst of gaining custody of the children when he killed them.

  • Texas man allegedly fatally struck pedestrian and then drove with victim’s body for 38 miles

WHITE SETTLEMENT, Texas (TCD) — A 31-year-old man stands accused of fatally striking a pedestrian in Dallas and then driving around with the victim’s body in his car over the weekend.

According to a news release from the White Settlement Police Department, on Saturday, Dec. 16, at approximately 11:13 p.m., officers responded to a restaurant parking lot in the 8700 block of Interstate Highway 30 Service Road after a caller reported a vehicle with extensive damage. Police said the reporting party observed a driver who “appeared to be slumped over the steering wheel” as well.

At the scene, an officer noticed a “human body with no signs of life in the front passenger seat” of the gray Kia Forte. According to the statement, the officer told the driver, Nestor Joel Lujan Flores, to exit the car and brought him in for questioning.

Emergency personnel also responded to the parking lot and pronounced the victim dead at the scene.

During an interview, Flores reportedly told police he thought he struck an animal in Dallas. Police learned there had been a crash in Dallas on the westbound service road of Interstate 30 near Cockrell Hill Road. Investigators “believe the impact was so severe that the pedestrian was thrown inside the vehicle and came to rest on the passenger seat.”

The Dallas County Sheriff’s Office informed the White Settlement Police Department that they found human remains near the crash site that might match the victim’s body. The Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office and the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office will work together to positively identify the remains.

After allegedly killing the victim, police believe Flores drove approximately 38 miles from the original crash scene in Dallas to White Settlement. Flores failed to seek help and did not report the fatal incident.

According to police, Flores reportedly arrived at the restaurant parking lot sometime between 8 p.m. and 9 p.m. on Dec. 16.

The Tarrant County Criminal District Attorney’s Office is reviewing the case, and the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office will assume the investigation.

Police seized the vehicle and will send all recovered evidence to the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office. Test results from a blood search are pending.

Flores remains held in the White Settlement Jail on a pending charge of intoxication manslaughter.

Plano Police previously arrested Flores in 2020 for driving while intoxicated, which he was convicted of in 2021.

  • Ga. woman sentenced for torturing 3 children, forcing them to do 'extreme bootcamp-style exercises'

NEWTON COUNTY, Ga. (TCD) — A mother will spend 30 years behind bars for torturing her three stepchildren, forcing them to do extreme exercises, and withholding food from them.

According to a news release from the Newton County District Attorney’s Office, a judge sentenced Nora Rodgers on Dec. 12 to 60 years of probation with the first 30 years to be served in prison after she pleaded guilty in October to nine counts of first-degree cruelty to children. Rodgers admitted that she had inflicted “physical, mental, and emotional abuse” on her three stepchildren.

On Oct. 4, 2020, a concerned relative called to request a welfare check on the kids. Law enforcement officials responded to the home, where they found the underage victims with “bruising, swelling, and physical marks,” suggesting they had been beaten. One of the children, a 9-year-old boy, reportedly had a black eye and severe bruising to his legs, while an 8-year-old girl had apparent bruising all over her body. Officers also observed marks on the 8-year-old girl from possible “physical punishments.”

According to the district attorney’s office, the 6-year-old child in the home sustained the worst physical injuries, including scrapes, swelling, and bruising. Additionally, the 6-year-old girl suffered a broken elbow and “severe internal injuries from the beatings that could have led to her death.”

The 6-year-old was transported to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta’s trauma unit, where she underwent medical treatment.

The children reportedly “suffered torture under the guise of punishment” over the years. Rodgers reportedly made her stepchildren do “extreme bootcamp-style exercises,” including laps, squats with “large logs,” for extended periods of time to the “point of exhaustion and injury.”

Further investigation revealed Rodgers had forced the children to do the exercises in the middle of the night, as well as in the summer heat. If they didn’t perform the exercises how Rodgers wanted, she would reportedly beat them. According to the district attorney’s office, Rodgers would also “spar with the children, striking and hitting them.”

According to the statement, Rodgers withheld adequate food from the children as punishment, and they were all malnourished as a result. Rodgers reportedly gave the children time limits to eat food and would often blend solid foods to make the victims eat faster.

The Department of Human Services Division of Family and Children Services had reportedly responded to the home previously and told Rodgers not to subject the children to the extreme exercises or punishment.

In addition to the three stepchildren, Rodgers had three biological children of her own living in the home, but she did not physically punish them, nor did she withhold food from her biological kids. All children in the home were removed and placed into the custody of foster care.

During Rodgers’ sentencing, the stepchildren, foster parents, a social worker, and the victims’ grandmother made statements regarding the abuse and how it “deeply affected the children.”

Newton District Attorney Randy McGinley said in a statement, “The dedicated work of the prosecution team led to a result that guarantees that the victims will be well into adulthood before Rodgers gets out of prison. The DA’s Office sought justice for the victims but also that Rodgers would be in prison long enough that she could not harm these children or any other children.”

  • Watchdog: Targeting of Catholics Wider Than FBI Claimed

    From Newsmax:

Heavily redacted documents released by the FBI showed that the agency’s controversial targeting of Roman Catholics was more widespread than a single incident in one field office, watchdog Judicial Watch reported Friday.

Judicial Watch reported that the 98 pages it obtained through a Freedom of Information lawsuit showed that the FBI memo from earlier this year that tagged some Catholics as violent extremists due to their religious beliefs was reviewed by the agency’s Office of General Counsel. Coordination also took place with Portland and Milwaukee officials.

Hardly a “single product but a single field office,” Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton said Friday.

“These documents disprove the FBI’s narrative that the spy operation against Catholics and churches was limited to one field office. In fact, the operation seems to have been approved by top lawyers in the FBI,” Fitton said in a statement. “These documents should trigger a criminal inquiry into this Biden FBI scandal.”

  • Heavily redacted records show FBI’s targeting of Catholics went beyond what it claimed: watchdog

    From Fox News:

A conservative government watchdog has released almost 100 pages of FBI documents it says show the agency was not fully forthcoming about its actions surveilling and targeting Catholic churches.

“FBI Director Christopher Wray had told congressmen that the memo was ‘a single product by a single field office,’ but the records uncovered by Judicial Watch show that it was “Reviewed by: OGC/CDC [Office of General Counsel/Chief Deputy Counsel],’” Judicial Watch posted in a press release Friday.

Judicial Watch obtained the documents through a FOIA request related to an internal FBI memo leaked earlier this year, which revealed that the agency had efforts underway to identify and treat Catholics as “potential terrorists.”

“The records also indicate coordination with officials from Portland and Milwaukee,” the press release said.

  • Tennessee man allegedly fatally threw 2-year-old against wall while babysitting

PUTNAM COUNTY, Tenn. (TCD) — Deputies arrested a man weeks after he allegedly fatally threw his live-in girlfriend’s 2-year-old child against a wall because he was upset with him.

On Dec. 2, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office responded to J D Randolph Road to a report of an unresponsive 2-year-old child. Deputies found the toddler, Ventura Mora-Francisco, and transported him to Cookeville Regional Medical Center. The child was later transported to Vanderbilt Medical Children’s Hospital to treat a major traumatic brain injury.

Putnam County Detective Sgt. Brian Haworth spoke with the victim’s mother, Sara Mora, as well as her live-in boyfriend, Ashton Sensing. The Sheriff’s Office said Sensing was babysitting the toddler and three other children when the victim sustained his injuries.

Sensing reportedly told the detective that while he was babysitting, he fell asleep on the couch and the victim fell once into an air vent and then fell a second time, causing him to go unconscious. However, according to the sheriff’s office, Sensing eventually confessed to the detective that he threw the child against a wall and hit him. Sensing said he kept getting upset with the 2-year-old throughout the day, and after throwing and hitting the child, the toddler became unresponsive.

Haworth later learned the victim’s injuries were “inoperable,” and he would not survive. Officials also determined the injuries were caused by “non-accidental blunt trauma.” The boy died three days after the incident, on Dec. 5.

Officials obtained a warrant for Sensing’s arrest on charges of first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse on Dec. 7. The sheriff’s office said Sensing avoided law enforcement and had been “on the run” since Dec. 6.

The sheriff’s office learned Sensing was at a Dollar General store in Putnam County on Dec. 14. Deputies went to the store, found Sensing, and took him into custody.

Sensing was booked into the Putnam County Jail and remains held without bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 12, 2024.

Sheriff Eddie Farris said in a statement, “This is a very sad and unfortunate outcome that resulted in the brutal death of an innocent child. There is no more important resource than the future of our children.”
