  • Ill. man sentenced for stabbing wife while gathering his belongings amid separation

NAPERVILLE, Ill. (TCD) — A 63-year-old man will spend a decade behind bars after confronting his wife during their separation in 2019, stabbing her and himself.

Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow announced that Patrick O’Brien was sentenced Dec. 21 to 10 years in prison for the attempted first-degree murder and aggravated domestic battery of his wife. He was convicted of the charges in August.

On Dec. 21, 2019, officers with the Naperville Police Department responded to a report of a stabbing at 2204 Popple Court. Police learned O’Brien had separated from his wife at the time of the attack.

According to the Will County state’s attorney’s office, O’Brien went to the victim’s home to collect some of his belongings, and his wife was in the kitchen. O’Brien then held a large kitchen knife and reportedly said, “If we’re done, then we’re done.”

O’Brien chased the victim out of the house as she ran to her neighbor’s patio door and screamed for help. O’Brien reportedly yelled, “You’re faster than I thought.” O’Brien then “pushed her against the rear wall of the neighbors’ residence.”

O’Brien’s wife reportedly “held her hands up in an attempt to fend off the knife,” and O’Brien then pushed the knife into her chest area and arm “while yelling an expletive at her.”

According to the state’s attorney’s office, the neighbor went outside to help and threw O’Brien down to the ground while he was still holding his wife. O’Brien reportedly stabbed himself and then tossed the knife.

Officials obtained surveillance video from the neighbor’s home that captured the attack.

The Will County state’s attorney’s office said O’Brien will get a credit of 38 days for time served. He’ll serve 85% of the term followed by three years of mandatory supervised release.

“The brutal attack shown in graphic detail on the home surveillance system captures the gruesome savagery of the attack by a controlling man who decided that if the marriage was over then his wife should die,” Glasgow said in a statement, adding, “This case bears out the stark reality in domestic violence that the most dangerous time for a survivor is when they leave their partner.”

  • Colorado mom on the run after allegedly killing 2 kids, injuring a third

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (TCD) — Police are searching for a 35-year-old woman they allege killed her two young children and injured a third, then fled just days before a warrant was issued for her arrest.

According to the Colorado Springs Police Department, on Tuesday, Dec. 19, at around 12:30 a.m., officers responded to a burglary call on the 5300 block of Palomino Way and found Kimberlee Singler and an 11-year-old female with injuries. Officers also located a 9-year-old girl and 7-year-old boy dead inside the home. Medics treated Singler and the 11-year-old at the scene before they went to a local hospital for additional care.

The department’s Homicide Unit took over the investigation and concluded the burglary call that sent officers to Singler’s home was “unfounded.”

Investigators obtained a probable cause warrant on Dec. 26 to arrest Singler on multiple charges, including four counts of murder, two counts of attempted first-degree murder, and several counts of child abuse. A judge set Singler’s bond at $10 million.

The Colorado Springs Police Department’s Violent Offender Fugitive Task Force began searching for Singler and learned she had not been seen since Dec. 23. Her whereabouts reportedly remain unknown.

KKTV-TV reports the 11-year-old child is safe.

  • Missing North Carolina teen found hidden in trap door in Kentucky man's home

LINCOLN COUNTY, Ky. (TCD) — A 34-year-old man was arrested this week after deputies located a missing 16-year-old girl from North Carolina who was reportedly hidden inside a trap door in the suspect’s home.

According to WNCN-TV, on Dec. 25, Zackary Jones’ mother called the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office to report a fight between Jones and his “girlfriend.” Deputies went to the home in Kings Mountain and were met by Jones and his mother, but the girlfriend was nowhere to be found. During the search, deputies spotted cocaine that Jones allegedly threw in a wood stove in an attempt to get rid of the drugs.

WLEX-TV reports deputies put Jones in the squad car and continued to look for the victim. They eventually located her in a trap door hidden under a rug in his bedroom and rescued her. Lincoln County deputies reportedly noted the teen was “very high.”

WTVD-TV, which cites the arrest citation, reports Jones allegedly confessed to having sex with the teen and getting high off crack cocaine and marijuana with her. The victim reportedly said he choked her during some of their sexual encounters. Jones reportedly denied the allegations even though deputies reportedly noticed marks on her neck.

According to WNCN, Jones and the victim reportedly met on Facebook, where they struck up an online relationship. Jones, however, allegedly told the teen he was 19 years old.

Jones picked up the teen from her grandmother’s home in Fayetteville, North Carolina, and drove her back to his residence in Kentucky. The teen was reported missing to the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office on Dec. 8. When they met, the victim reportedly made a comment that Jones looked older than 19, and he purportedly said he was 25. Then, when they got to Kentucky, she reportedly learned of Jones’ real age.

The two had been communicating for about two to three weeks before he took her to Kentucky.

WTVD reports Jones allegedly told the victim she to lie and pretend she was 18 years old. During their time together, he reportedly threatened to shoot her on several occasions. He also allegedly threatened to kill a sheriff’s deputy when he got pulled over for a traffic violation.

Jones’ mother told WRAL-TV she’s the one who called 911 because Jones and the victim were “arguing, yelling, and screaming,” which she said was the “hardest thing I had to do.”

Jones allegedly told his mother the victim was 19, and she “took that as the truth.”

According to WRAL, Jones allegedly said there were at least 10 times when he got the victim high and had sex.

Pulaski County Jail records show Jones is being held on multiple charges, including rape, sodomy, strangulation, and more. He is being held without bond.

  • Happy New Year!

    Happy New Year!

    Happy New Year!

This is the season of resolutions for the coming year, and the practice must speak to something deep within us because its roots are ancient.

The Babylonians are said to have been the first to make New Year’s resolutions, some 4,000 years ago. In 46 B.C. Julius Caesar established January 1 as the beginning of the new year. The month is named for Janus, the two-faced god who symbolically looked backwards into the previous year and ahead into the future.

Today resolutions are typically about health and personal improvement. Let me propose, however, that we resolve to stand strong against the ill winds blowing across our land.

Let us resolve to stand with parents investigated for their involvement with their school boards.

Let us  resolve to stand with those being censored by the federal government.

Let us resolve to stand with those whose lives are shattered by leftist policies on crime.

Let us resolve to stand expose and stop the attacks on our elections and freedoms by weaponized government.

We have withstood the worst before.

As the New Year of 1942 began, Hitler held Europe, Nazi U-boats prowled the Atlantic, and America had received a heavy blow at Pearl Harbor.

British Prime Minister Winston Churchill was in the United States and spoke to our Congress about our common enemies:

“They have certainly embarked upon a very considerable undertaking…. What kind of a people do they think we are? Is it possible they do not realize that we shall never cease to persevere against them until they have been taught a lesson which they and the world will never forget?”

Later, on a train in New York traveling near President Franklin Roosevelt’s home at Hyde Park, he called staff and reporters to the dining car. He wanted to “cast some forward light upon the dark, inscrutable mysteries of the future.” He toasted them:

Here’s to 1942, here’s to a year of toil—a year of struggle and peril, and a long step forward towards victory. May we all come through safe and with honour.

Let us take courage today from those words. 2024 will be a year of struggle for the rule of law but let us resolve to embrace it with perseverance and honor.  (One great way to enter this important year is with a donation to your Judicial Watch!)

    Happy New Year!

    Until next week,

  • Man accused of killing half-brother on Christmas while he was searching for missing phone

NAPERVILLE, Ill. (TCD) — A Florida man faces charges after allegedly killing his half-brother in Illinois on Christmas over a missing cellphone.

According to the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office, on Monday, Dec. 25, shortly after 3 p.m., DuPage County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a home on Wood Court in reference to a person shot. Once there, deputies located the victim, James Watson, inside the residence suffering from an apparent gunshot wound to his abdomen. He was rushed to a local hospital and pronounced dead.

Prosecutors allege the victim was in the downstairs area of the home and became upset because he couldn’t find his cellphone. He reportedly “slammed a card table on the floor,” and the victim’s half-brother, 28-year-old Kendall Yarborough, who was upstairs in another part of the house, allegedly “shot down towards Watson, striking him in the abdomen.”

Family members called 911 and rendered aid until deputies’ arrival. Officials recovered a 9mm Sig Sauer P-365X handgun and one spent 9mm bullet casing at the scene. Deputies apprehended Yarborough without incident.

According to the state’s attorney’s office, Yarborough was charged with two counts of first-degree murder, and he first appeared in court on Tuesday, Dec. 26.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Bob Berlin said in a statement, “This senseless act of violence will not go unpunished. To James’ family and friends, I offer my sincere condolences and wish them strength as they mourn the loss of a family member and come to terms with another family member accused of his murder.”
