  • Michigan man arrested after woman, her dog and cat die in house fire

FLINT, Mich. (TCD) — A 31-year-old man faces charges after allegedly starting a residential fire earlier this month that killed a 43-year-old woman.

According to a news release from Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton, in the early hours of Saturday, Feb. 3, Flint Township Police responded to a home on Helber Street after Angela Craig called 911 and reported that Chad Egan was “banging on her door repeatedly and she wanted him to leave.”

Officers spoke with Egan at the scene, and he left. Police tried but failed to make contact with Craig following the incident. Around one hour later, shortly after 4 a.m., police and firefighters were called to Craig’s home for a residential fire. On their way to the victim’s home, emergency responders passed Egan as he was walking on Lavelle Road.

Flint Township Fire Department personnel located Craig inside her home, and she was transported to an area hospital, where she was pronounced dead, according to a news release from police.

Criag died of smoke inhalation, and her cat and dog were found deceased in the fire as well, Leyton announced.

Police went back to the area of Lavelle Road, located Egan, and took him into custody.

Investigators obtained surveillance footage reportedly showing Egan walking toward and away from Craig’s home multiple times, as well as in the front yard of an abandoned house nearby.

Officers observed a “lighter light up and then Egan walking across the street and off camera,” according to Leyton.

The footage reportedly shows houses in the neighborhood “lit up from Craig’s home on fire.”

Police said Egan was booked into the Genesee County Jail on charges of homicide –– felony murder, first-degree arson, and habitual offender –– fourth offense.

  • Woman shot and killed after bringing young son and opening fire inside Joel Osteen’s church

HOUSTON (TCD) — A 36-year-old woman was shot dead by off-duty police officers when she walked into Joel Osteen’s megachurch and opened fire in the hallway.

According to Houston Police Commander Christopher Hassig, on Sunday, Feb. 11, at 1:53 p.m., Genesse Moreno exited a white vehicle, pulled a 7-year-old child out of the back seat, and walked to the west side of Lakewood Church. Moreno was carrying a bag and wearing a trench coat. She confronted a security guard and entered the church at 1:55 p.m., then “immediately” started firing her long gun. Hassig emphasized the shooting did not occur inside the church’s sanctuary.

Moreno allegedly shot “multiple rounds” inside the hallway, then engaged in a gun battle with two off-duty officers who were working at the church. The 7-year-old child she brought in, who police confirmed was her son, was shot in the head during the crossfire. He was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. Police Chief Troy Finner said the boy is “fighting for his life.”

The gunfire lasted several minutes, and Moreno was declared dead at 2:07 p.m.

Moreno reportedly had a number of aliases, including Jeffrey Escalante, but Hassig said the investigation has determined Moreno identifies as a female.

A 57-year-old man reportedly sustained a gunshot wound to the leg. Houston Fire Chief Sam Peña said in a press conference Moreno threatened that she had a bomb, but police searched her car and bag and did not find any explosives.

Hassig said police recovered an AR-15 long gun that she used in the shooting and a .22 caliber rifle in her hand bag. The AR-15 had a “Palestine” sticker on it, which Hassig said relates to antisemitic writings they uncovered during their investigation.

Police do not believe Moreno is part of a larger organization.

According to Hassig, Moreno was put under an emergency detention order in 2016 and she has a history of mental health issues. Officials believe there was a “familial dispute” between Moreno and her ex-husband and his family members, some of whom are Jewish.

Osteen released a statement following the shooting at his church, which said in part, “In times like these, our faith is tested, but it is also strengthened. We don’t always understand why things like this happen, but we know that God is in control.”

KHOU-TV reports the shooting occurred a few minutes before services in Spanish were scheduled to begin.

    Police are continuing to investigate.

  • Former WWE wrestler Billy Jack Haynes accused of fatally shooting 85-year-old wife

PORTLAND, Ore. (TCD) — A former professional wrestler is accused of shooting and killing his 85-year-old wife at their home last week.

According to the Portland Police Bureau, on Thursday, Feb. 8, just before 10 a.m., officers responded to the 6000 block of Southeast 100th Avenue in the city’s Lents neighborhood for a report of a shooting. Police made contact with a potential suspect inside the home, but he reportedly would not cooperate with officers. Portland Police called in the Special Emergency Reaction Team and Crisis Negotiation Team for assistance, and he later surrendered.

Officers went into the home and found Janette Becraft deceased.

On Saturday, Feb. 10, Portland Police identified the suspect as Becraft’s husband, William Albert Haynes Jr. Police said Haynes, 70, is in police custody at a hospital because he is receiving treatment for “a medical condition unrelated to the homicide or his contact with law enforcement.”

He will be booked into jail when is he released from the hospital, which “may be days from now.”

Thomas Matthieu, who lives with his daughter in a separate part of Haynes’ house, told The Oregonian/Oregon Live that Becraft and Haynes were “inseparable” and “adored each other.”

Becraft reportedly suffered from dementia, and Haynes had a bad fall one night before the shooting, according to The Oregonian/Oregon Live.

The suspect was more famously known as “Billy Jack” Haynes in the 1980s when he was a wrestler for the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE). He also participated in “WrestleMania III” in 1987. The Oregonian/Oregon Live reports Haynes filed a lawsuit against the WWE in 2014 for failing to protect athletes from head trauma. Haynes reportedly suffered at least 15 concussions during his tenure.

The class action complaint shared by the news source says, “Under the guise of providing ‘entertainment,’ WWE has, for decades, subjected its wrestlers to extreme physical brutality that it knew, or should have known, caused long-term irreversible bodily damage, including brain damage.”

The complaint says Haynes “suffers from depression and exhibits signs of dementia.”

One neighbor told The Oregonian/Oregon Live following the shooting, “Everybody in the neighborhood knew them. It’s just shocking.”

  • Indiana teen accused of fatally strangling his mom after she allegedly tried to evict him

VALPARAISO, Ind. (TCD) — A 19-year-old male faces charges after allegedly strangling his mother last week and inflicting serious brain damage, causing her to die days later.

On Monday, Feb. 5, at around 4 p.m., officers with the Valparaiso Police Department responded to the 1350 block of Diamond Boulevard after Conner Kobold called dispatch several times requesting their assistance.

In one of those calls, Kobold said, “I need you to send a police car here right now” and hung up, according to WXIN-TV.

According to court documents reviewed by WGN-TV, Kobold, who sustained scratches on his face, asked that a police officer handcuff him and place him in the back of a squad car. Inside the police vehicle, Kobold reportedly told an officer, “There is a dead person inside of the house on the corner.”

Police went to the nearby residence, where they reportedly found Kobold’s mother, Shanelle Burns, unresponsive without a pulse, and officers identified Kobold as the primary suspect.

Fire personnel transported Burns to a local hospital for treatment. She died two days later, on Wednesday, Feb. 7, WGN reports.

Hospital staff reportedly determined Burns’ injuries put her in “grave danger.” According to WXIN, she suffered “substantial” brain damage before her death, sustained small ligature marks on her neck, and at one point had a body temperature of 93 degrees.

Inside the home, officers reportedly observed the furniture had been moved, suggesting there was a struggle.

On Friday, Feb. 9, an autopsy determined Burns died of asphyxiation secondary to strangulation, and her death was ruled a homicide, WGN reports.

Before the fatal attack, Burns reportedly filed an eviction notice against her son because he allegedly failed to follow “agreed upon house rules.”

Police said Kobold was initially booked into the Porter County Jail on charges of attempted murder, aggravated battery, and strangulation. However, according to jail records, he now faces an upgraded charge of murder.

Prior to her death, Burns worked as a vice president of advancement at Loyola University Chicago.

    Press Releases

Judicial Watch Fights to Keep Elections Honest

For more than a decade, Judicial Watch has been fighting to keep elections free and fair. One of the key weapons in this battle is the National Voter Registration Act. The NVRA directs the states to make “a reasonable effort” to remove from voting rolls “the names of ineligible voters” who have been disqualified from voting due to death or change of residence. States—red and blue, Republican and Democrat—often dodge this responsibility, creating opportunities for election fraud and opening the door to illegal votes swinging close contests.

Judicial Watch: Records Show Secret Service Ordered Staff to Not Respond to Head of RFK Jr.’s Private Security

“These documents confirm the bureaucratic and political runaround the Biden administration went through to ultimately deny Robert F. Kennedy Jr. the requested Secret Service protection,” said Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton. “The Biden administration’s refusal to provide Secret Service protection to Mr. Kennedy is dangerous and vindictive. Congress would do well to follow up on these disturbing documents uncovered by Judicial Watch’s FOIA investigation and lawsuit.”

Judicial Watch Sues for Documents Related to Boston Mayor’s ‘Electeds of Color Holiday Party’

Judicial Watch announced recently it filed a public records lawsuit in the Superior Court for Suffolk County, Massachusetts, against the City of Boston after the city failed to produce records related to the “Electeds of Color Holiday Party” hosted by Boston Mayor Michelle Wu in December 2023.

Govt. Pays “U.S. Subject Matter Experts” to Help Pakistani Journalists Combat Misinformation

The Biden administration’s scandal-plagued initiative to combat misinformation has grown into a dynamic global effort run by handpicked “U.S. subject matter experts” and embedded with a mandate of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA). In the latest ploy to counter disinformation the administration is investing $50,000 to train journalists in the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. “The project will implement a program to build the capacity of 30 mid-to senior level Pakistani journalists/reporters from relatively new print, broadcast, and digital media outlets, to counter misinformation and disinformation in media reporting,” according to a grant announcement posted this week.

  • Mail-In Ballot Fraud Analysis Concludes Trump ‘Almost Certainly’ Won 2020 Election

The United States of America is months away from holding another federal election and it is still unclear to tens of millions of Americans who actually won the 2020 election.

The Heartland Institute recently published a study to assess the probability of fraud in the 2020 election between Donald Trump and Joe Biden due to the prevalence of mail-in balloting.

Swing states in the 2020 election implemented unconstitutional measures to allow for mass mail-in voting under the pretext of the Covid pandemic without passing laws through the state legislature. Those states include Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, according to a lawsuit brought by Texas’ Attorney General Ken Paxton and filed in the U.S. Supreme Court. That case was ultimately dismissed for lack of standing, despite the state possessing original jurisdiction for the Supreme Court to hear legal disputes between states.

Thus, it is unresolved whether the use of “no excuse” mail-in ballots in certain swing states during the 2020 election was even legal and constitutional, in addition to the practical issue n of whether the practice led to a high degree of fraud (willful rigging of the election for a certain outcome) or malfeasance (invalid results arising due to failure to abide by election laws).

“These abrupt and hasty changes to voting procedures in the months before the 2020 election occurred despite the fact that ample evidence showed that mass mail-in voting, unsecure ballot drop boxes, ballot harvesting, and lack of signature verification would result in a flood of fraudulent ballots that would undermine the accuracy of the election results,” the Heartland Institute, a conservative think tank, remarks on the need for the study.

“This paper examines the likely impact that fraudulent mail-in ballots cast for both Joe Biden and Donald Trump in the 2020 election could have had upon the overall electoral results, based upon recently unearthed evidence indicating widespread mail-in voter fraud indeed occurred in the 2020 election,” the study’s authors note. “After summarizing the problems associated with mail-in voting, we discuss the results of a groundbreaking poll conducted by The Heartland Institute and Rasmussen Reports in November/ December 2023, which attempted to definitely assess the degree of fraudulent voting that took place in the 2020 election.”

“The results of the survey are nothing short of stunning, and upon their release, they sparked numerous conversations about the amount of fraud in the 2020 election and the potential impact of mail-in ballot fraud in future elections,” the authors add. “For example, former President Trump referred to the poll as ‘the biggest story of the year’ and ‘the most important poll released in the past 20 years’.”

“According to the results of the survey, a massive number of voters who cast ballots by mail admitted to committing at least one form of voter fraud in the 2020 election,” the survey authors stated.

    These results include:

    • 21 percent of mail-in voters admitted that in 2020 they voted in a state where they are “no longer a permanent resident.”
    • 21 percent of mail-in voters admitted that they filled out a ballot for a friend or family member.
    • 17 percent of mail-in voters said they signed a ballot for a friend or family member “with or without his or her permission.”
    • 19 percent of mail-in voters said that a friend or family member filled out their ballot, in part or in full, on their behalf.

These actions constitute election fraud, depending on the state’s law where the action took place, or alternatively, these actions constitute an unacceptable violation of the bedrock election principle of “one voice, one vote.”

The authors then analyze the likelihood that Donald Trump wins the 2020 presidential race against Joe Biden if there were a fair and secure election.

“After analyzing the raw survey data, we were also able to conclude that 28.2 percent of respondents who voted by mail admitted to committing at least one kind of voter fraud,” the authors conclude. “This means that more than one-in-four ballots cast by mail in 2020 were likely cast fraudulently, and thus should not have been counted.”

“Because Joe Biden received significantly more mail in votes than Donald Trump, we conclude that the 2020 election outcome would have been different in the key swing states that Donald Trump lost by razor thin margins in 2020—Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin— under the 28.2 percent scenario,” the study continues. “We also analyzed the electoral results for those six swing states under every integer from 27 percent fraud down to 1 percent fraud, allowing readers to see the impact that fraudulent mail-in ballots might have produced under each scenario.”

“We made a number of assumptions and gathered our data from a variety of sources in addition to our poll, which is detailed in the methodology and data sections,” the authors add.

In summary, the authors provide an analysis of the results state-by-state if mail-in ballots were invalidated due to non-conformity to state election law.

    • 28.2 percent fraud
      • Trump wins Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.
      • Trump wins the Electoral College 311-227.
    • 27 percent fraud through 14 percent fraud
      • From 27 percent fraud down through 14 percent, the overall results are identical to the 28.2 percent fraud scenario (though Trump’s margin of victory in each state shrinks as the overall mail-in ballot fraud integer shrinks).
    • 13 percent fraud through 6 percent fraud
      • Trump wins Arizona, Georgia, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, but loses to Biden in Michigan and Nevada.
      • Trump wins the Electoral College 289-249.
    • 5 percent fraud and 4 percent fraud
      • Trump wins Arizona, Georgia, and Wisconsin, but loses to Biden in Michigan, Nevada, and Pennsylvania.
      • Trump and Biden tie the Electoral College 269-269. As described in more detail in the paper, Trump would likely have won the resulting vote in the House of Representatives, because Republicans controlled more state delegations in the wake of the 2020 election.
    • 3 percent fraud
      • Trump wins Arizona and Georgia, but loses to Biden in Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.
      • Biden wins the Electoral College 279-259.
    • 2 percent fraud and 1 percent fraud
      • Trump does not win any states. Biden wins Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin.
      • Biden wins the Electoral College 306-232.

  • Pa. man sentenced for killing father because he 'never paid attention' to him

WARRINGTON TOWNSHIP, Pa. (TCD) — A 25-year-old man will spend the rest of his life in prison for fatally shooting his father in 2019 because he ignored him.

York County District Attorney Dave Sunday announced Feb. 8 that a judge sentenced Wyatt Dettinger to a mandatory term of life in prison for the first-degree murder of his father, Duane Dettinger. He was also sentenced to six to 12 months for tampering with or fabricating physical evidence, which he will serve concurrently.

A jury convicted Wyatt Dettinger of the charges in December 2023 following a weeklong trial.

According to the York Daily Record, Wyatt Dettinger shot his father twice, once through his bedroom wall and once straight at him with a .243-caliber rifle on July 22, 2019.

Wyatt Dettinger reportedly admitted in court that he wasn’t happy with his living situation with the victim. The York Daily Record reports the defendant said his father “never paid attention” to him. Wyatt Dettinger’s father would allegedly go on his computer all day, drink alcohol, and bring home various women.

The defendant’s parents reportedly divorced when he was a child. According to the York Daily Record, the defendant decided to live with his father because he lived closer to his friends, and he disliked his mother’s boyfriend.

On the day of his father’s death, Wyatt Dettinger said his car was having issues, he became upset, and was experiencing suicidal ideation, the York Daily reports.

Wyatt Dettinger reportedly stated, “I lost my cool.”

While he was home, Dettinger said he tossed his phone into the television, grabbed his hunting rifle, and used it to hit the television, according to the York Daily Record. He then reportedly threatened to kill himself with the gun.

Wyatt Dettinger’s father walked over to his son and tried to get him to stop. When his father left, Wyatt Dettinger reportedly shot the rifle through the wall, hitting the victim.

According to the York Daily Record, the defendant said his father began making “gurgling noises” shortly after, so he shot him again to stop his pain because he “didn’t want to hear that.”

  • Man charged after 2 women were found dead under similar circumstances on the same street

NDIANAPOLIS (TCD) — Police apprehended and are charging a man they allege killed two women on the same street within days of each other.

The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department and Marion County Prosecutor’s Office announced Friday, Feb. 9, that David Hiner was arrested and charged with two counts of murder for the deaths of Shannon Lassere, 58, and Marianne Weis, 52.

The investigation began on Saturday, Jan. 27, when Lassere was found dead at on the 2200 block of North Mitthoefer Road. Five days later, on Thursday, Feb. 1, Indianapolis Metro Police were called to the 2100 block of North Mitthoefer Road, where they found Weis deceased. Police were urging people in the area to “practice good safety habits” as the investigation continued.

Police said in addition to occurring in close proximity to each other, the women’s deaths bore other similarities. Weis and Lassere were both white women in their 50s and they both died from sharp force injuries. Police said they “had ties to the far east side” of the city. The Indianapolis Star reports the two women were discovered face down and had their pants bunched around their knees.

According to Indianapolis Police, detectives obtained a “significant amount of video” footage from businesses in the area, which reportedly showed a man and one of the victims together. The Indianapolis Star reports Weis was seen on camera behind a Dollar General and walking down an alley with a male who police believe was Hiner.

Police identified Hiner as a suspect after Human Trafficking and Vice Unit detectives canvassed the area where the women were found. Hiner spoke with investigators Feb. 6, and the next day, homicide detectives executed a search warrant at his apartment. They reportedly found shoes that had apparent dried blood on them as well as jeans that were soaking in bleach in a bucket in his bathtub.

Police learned Hiner was on probation out of La Porte County, Indiana. The blood found on Hiner’s shoes allegedly matched Weis and Lassere’s DNA.

Police said there is “a lot of work yet to do” despite the arrest.
