    Sports Minister Lauds Contributions of Nigerians in Diaspora to Nation Building

    …Says Sports to Contribute 7% to National GDP By 2027

    The Honourable Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh has praised the patriotism and contributions of Nigerians in diaspora to nation building.

    Delivering his remarks titled, “Engaging with the Diaspora in Engineering Sports for National Development” during the Nigeria Diaspora Investment Summit, organized by Nigerians in Diaspora Commission and Nigeria Diaspora Summit Initiative in Abuja on Tuesday, the Minister stated that Nigeria’s diaspora community has over the years made outstanding contributions to the country’s economy to an extent that they now hold such importance and relevance in Nigeria’s story of nation building.

    Senator Owan Enoh noted that sustained increase in diaspora inflows into Nigeria makes it one of the fastest growing aspects of the global economy.

    Buttressing his postulation, he said that a breakdown of figures from the World Bank showed that, as of 2015 diaspora remittance stood at $21.2bn; $19.7bn in 2016 and $22bn in 2017. In 2018, it rose up to $24.31bn; $23.81bn in 2019 and $17.21bn in 2020.

    Remittances from Nigerians in diaspora in 2021 stood at $19.2bn and $20.9bn in 2022. In total, the sum of $168 billion was sent home by Nigerians in diaspora between 2015 and 2022.

    Senator Enoh described them as unrepentant believers in the greatness of Nigeria and embodiments of patriotism, noting that their remittances have played a key role in assuaging the impact of foreign exchange scarcity and in keeping the country’s forex reserve afloat.

    He said that as minister of Sports Development, he would draw a new vision for Nigerian sports (2023-2031), rebranding Nigeria’s sports profile, improve the value proposition map and fit into place, templates on which the future of sports shall depend.

    According to him, the capacity of sports to transform and improve the physical, psychological, emotional and social wellbeing of individuals and the significant role that it plays in cultures and communities around the world are enough to justify huge investments in sports.

    He added that if the potentials of the sports sector is fully harnessed, it could contribute 7% to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

    “Our Vision in the Ministry of Sports Development is to establish a thriving sports industry that contributes over 7 per cent to the national GDP with an annual net evaluation of over 3 billion dollars by 2027” Enoh said. “I envision the enablement of a multi-trillion naira sports industry that promotes excellence in sports and fosters talent development.”

    He observed that although the development community had marginalized sports, he aligned himself to the unfolding international movement which recognizes that sports does not have to compete with other development priorities but can instead  be a powerful means  for addressing them.

    The Minister stressed that what was needed to surmount the challenges facing sports in Nigeria is the right strategy to set it in the right direction. He canvassed for enduring partnership between the government and the private sector to get things going in the right direction. Under his leadership, he identified activating and enabling a welfare system that caters for serving and retired athletes, activation of sports business industry, funding of sports development as some of the focus areas of the ministry.

    NCTO To Partner UNICEF, Set To Crash Rising Poverty Index

    A team from the United nations children Trust Fund, UNICEF have met with the Leadership of the National Cash  Transfer Office to interact on measures to boost works in the Alleviation of poverty in the country.

    They visited to discuss measures in tackling multi dimensional poverty among all Nigerians with hopes of minimizing the influx of people into the sliding poverty index.

    The aim is to help cultivate a robust working relationship and ride on the guiding principles of equity, fairness and accountability in line with the Renewed Hope mantra of President Ahmed Bola Tinubu and guidelines of the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs headed by Dr Betta Edu.

    The team received by the National Coordinator, Dr Michael Ajuluchuku and Deputy National Coordinator, National Cash Transfer Office, Dr Janet Ekpenyong was assured of harmonious working relationship in order to help Alleviate the over 133 million Nigerians said to be living below the Poverty index across the 774 Local Government Areas of the country.

    According to the National Coordinator, Dr Michael Ajuluchuku,  the need to reinforce the actions and update the National social Register is imminent in order for the policy thrust of the government to be felt by the vulnerable. He further reiterated the  commitment of the office to partner with organizations such as UNICEF that will support Cash Transfer , as it is one of the solutions to ending poverty. He also solicited for support in the areas of capacity building and input on the restructuring of the program.

    In her response, The Deputy National Coordinator, National Cash Transfer Office, Dr Janet Ekpenyong called for the formation of a Technical Working Group in alliance with sister MDAs and stakeholders in communicating with Nigerians on the gains recorded through the Cash Transfer Office.

    She said, the  National  Cash Transfer Program, which is one of the areas the Honourable Minister, Dr Betta Edu is prioritizing as a tool to  fight poverty and will continue to promote innovations especially on cash transfer that will help provide sources of livelihood, income and knowledge to the vulnerable across the country noting that  advocacies will commence soon as traditional communication means are already being lined up in communities. She further advocated for the reduction of fragmentation of cash transfer program in the country while soliciting for support to coordinate stakeholders in the cash transfer space in the country.

    In their separate responses, representatives of UNICEF headed by the Chief of social policy, Mr Hamidou Poufon congratulated the new team for their appointments, assuring them of maximum cooperation and supports in meeting with their targets.

    They called for a formation of child grant as part of the major social security and protection policy to bring an end to inflating Poverty rate in the country.

    They acknowledged the efforts of the Humanitarian Ministry under the leadership of Dr Betta Edu in prompt responses to natural disasters like flood, conflicts and communal crisis which daily contributes to the loss of lives and means of livelihood affecting parents and their children alike.

    They said even though there are reservations  in the productivity of cash transfer, and sometimes doubts by Nigerians, millions have become beneficiaries, which has helped cushion the effects of perennial poverty across many zones in the country.

    Both teams are expected to produce a working document that when conceptionalized , will create the perfect template for modern day livelihood sustainable scheme.
    Also, in the meeting, were other technical staff of the National Cash transfer office and UNICEF staff including Nkatha Nobure and Segun Tekun.

    The Honourable Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh stated in his office at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium Abuja, when he met with the members of the  Dream Sports Africa led by its Country Director, Mr Michael Anejo, the role of sports in the Nation’s eight point agenda and how critical it is for private sector collaborations.

    He said: “The progress of the sports sector cannot be limited to the role of government alone.”

    Senator Owan Enoh stated that the new vision and thinking of government under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu now is that sports is seen as both recreation and business. This he said, was the right approach to jumpstart the desired transformation of sports in our country.

    He stated that with this new vision of government, the Federal Ministry of Sports Development under his watch, will continue to keep its door open to collaboration with relevant stakeholders, private sector investors, the civil society organisations as well as the global sports community in order to join hands with the Federal Government in its effort to fully unlock the economic potentials of sports in Nigeria and in the process, unleash one of the most consequential transformations of the 21st century.

    The Minister stated further that sports has a great potential for wealth creation, employment generation, poverty alleviation, social inclusivity
    and the ability to make substantial contributions to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

    “Sports plays a role in at least four of governments eight point agenda .Areas of security and insecurity, generation of employment, poverty alleviation and social inclusion”.

    Senator Owan Enoh noted that private sector organisations have a critical role to play in unlocking these opportunities but that this huge potential has been squandered due to inaction and missed priorities.

    He called on the private sector investors and major players in the industry to take advantage of the incentives put in place by the current administration to invest massively in the development of sports in Nigeria.

    Besides, Senator Owan Enoh explained that in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the present administration, the government has endorsed the National Sports Industry Policy (NSIP) approved by the immediate past administration and that the Ministry was committed to ensuring the implementation of the policy especially, in areas such as expanding and improving School Sports Games, implementing a strategic plan to define the growth path for discovered talents, improved welfare for athletes and Public Private Partnerships for upgrade of essential sports infrastructure across the country.

    Speaking earlier, the Director, Dream Sports Africa, Mr Michael Anejo thanked the Honourable Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh, for accepting to meet with their organisation to discuss likely areas of collaboration that will drive Sports Development across the country in spite of his busy schedule.

    He assured that his organisation will go back to the drawing board and identify critical areas it needs to partner with the Ministry and the Federal Government in its effort at ensuring the realization of the policy objectives of the present administration as it relates to sports development in line with global realities.

    Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh has advised investors and major players in the private sector to take advantage of incentives put in place by the current administration to invest massively in the sports sector. Delivering a lecture titled, “Sports Development as a Panacea for National Unity and Economic Development”, at the National Defence College in Abuja on Tuesday, the minister who described sports in Nigeria as untapped goldmine for economic development said that sports have the capacity to provide gainful employment to millions of our youths and other unemployed Nigerians if properly harnessed.

    He said, “The new vision and thinking of government led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu now sees sports as both recreation and business. It is the right approach to jumpstart the desired transformation of sports in our country. I therefore invite the private sector, investors, the civil society and the global sports community to join the present administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in its effort to fully unlock the economic potential of sports in Nigeria and in the process, unleash one of the most consequential transformations of the 21st century.”

    It is for this reason he said the Ministry of Sports Development under his leadership is committed to the implementation of the National Sports Industry Policy (NSIP) with incentives for investors. Senator Owan Enoh who stated that sports has the potential for wealth creation, employment generation and the ability to make substantial contributions to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) lamented that this huge potential had been squandered due to inaction and missed opportunities.

    The minister assured prospective investors and Nigerians that the ministry of Sports Development will create the enabling environment for sports to thrive not just as a recreational activity but as business.
    “I want to assure stakeholders in this critical sector and sports loving Nigerians that as a government, we are committed and determined to ensure the full implementation of this policy document in order to harness the transformative capacity of sports for the economic development of our country”, he said.

    As a universally acclaimed unifying force, he described sports as a unique connective rod that binds people together. Senator John Owan Enoh reiterated the commitment of the Tinubu administration to transform the sports sector, a vision which informed the decision to create a separate Ministry of Sports Development.

    Apart from formulating policies and implementing programmes aimed at developing sports at the grassroots level within the institutional framework which includes National Sports Festival (NSF), National Youth Games, and Sports Development Centers among others, he listed some focus areas the ministry would pay full attention to under his leadership. These include expanding and improving School Sports Games, implementing a strategic plan to define the growth path for discovered talents, improved welfare for athletes and Public Private Partnerships for upgrade of essential sports infrastructure.

    The Honourable Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh  has charged the Super Falcons to redouble their efforts and consign Ethiopia to the heap in order to reach the penultimate round of qualifiers for next year’s Women’s Olympic Football Tournament in France.

    Senator Enoh gave the charge in a message to the Falconets after their draw in the first leg of the match on Sunday in East Africa, charging them to step on the pedal and ensure a landslide win in their next match coming up today, October 31, 2023 at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja

    The Minister expressed optimism that the Falconets will do the nation proud, especially since the match is being played on the shores of the country.

    Senator Owan Enoh called on them to take charge, dominate and conquer the ‘Feisty Lucy’ of Ethiopian.

    Senator Owan Enoh charged the girls to make the win a welcome gift to the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led Administration, being their first match in the country since the inception of the present administration, adding that he will personally celebrate the victory as a gift to him.

    “Even though we are in the race for qualification, I will be excited if the Super Falcons can beat Feisty ‘Lucy’ in today’s match for the generality of Nigerians, as we celebrate this new phase of our sports,” he said.

    He therefore called on sports loving Nigerians, not to only pray for their success but also come in their multitude to watch the match, adding that Nigeria is solidly behind them.

    The Honourable Minister for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu, wishes to inform the general public that a circulating portal “FG Humanitarian and Poverty Alleviation Trust Fund Portal” did not emanate from the
    Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.

    The said portal is fake,  created by undesirable elements with the sole intention of defrauding unsuspecting members of the public.

    The Minister said there will never be a portal from either the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation or any other ministries departments or agencies of government or its partners to apply for or access funds from the Humanitarian and Poverty Alleviation Trust Fund.

    The general public is, therefore, advised to discount the circulating link to the alleged portal as it is the creation of a fraudster.

    The Honourable Minister of Sports Development,Senator John Owan Enoh was present at the Pitstop Lagos Criterium, a monthly cycling race organized by the Pitstop community to promote grassroots cycling, athleticism and Adopt a Youth  initiative which seeks to shape responsible, dedicated, and exemplary youths through academic sponsorship, cycling, employment and mentorship by senior members of the cycling community.

    The Minister stated clearly the commitment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for Sports Development in the country, paying apt attention to the various sports and their Federations for proper development from the grassroot through to advanced levels.
    “The race is highly appreciated ,and we should be encouraged by Governments presence,” he said.

    Giving the Sports Minister a brief on the Pitstop Cycling community, Adebisi Adebutu a senior Pitstop mentor said the consistency of the event for the past four years has attracted major corporate sponsors such as Access Bank, Craneburg Construction and Ìlúbìrìn Lagos Island.

    Mentor Adebisi said: “This has in turn spiked interest in cycling such that it has become the fastest growing sport in the country attracting a wide demography  from across professional and recreational cyclist. Cycling has developed this deep ecosystem that is providing hope and opportunity to the young people involved in the sport”. He further mentioned that the cycling community has promoted the “adopt an athlete” initiative of the Sports Ministry that has seen so many athletes being supported by recreational riders.

    The Honourable Minister of Sports lauded the Sponsors of the event and encouraged more Corporate Organizations, the private sector to be encouraged to do more.
    “Having me come here sends a signal on the Ministries Openness to collaborate with corporate organisations to develop grassroot sports and encourage greater  private sector participation”.

    Pitstop Lagos Criterium had 50 participants and three teams,team Access, team Craneburg and team Ilubirin. The competitors did 23 laps on the Dolphin loop. Isaac Gana emerged 1st position and winner of the grand prize of one million naira. Team Access won the best team.

    The event was graced by top members of the community who are also mentors including Adebisi Adebutu,John Adesioye,Busola Songonuga and Femi Ehindero.

    President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has a target to reach at least half the number of poor and vulnerable individuals across Nigeria within the next year and this is in line with his 8-point agenda which has poverty eradication as a priority.

    The multi-dimensional poverty is to be addressed through different programs targeted at the grassroots. The chief driver of this Agenda of Poverty Eradication is the Ministry saddled with the responsibility of Renewing the Hopes of Nigerians daily in their millions.

    Residents of the Ushafa community in the Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, and many other suburbs played host to the Minister Of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation as she engaged market women and petty traders ahead of the launch of the IYALOJA MONIE next month. This program has the target of reaching at least 1.5 million Nigerians nationwide.

    Excitement was palpable in the air as the residents trooped out in their numbers to join the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu, as she moved from one petty trader table to the next.

    The Minister who left the opulence and glitz of Abuja city center to reach out to the poor and vulnerable people in Ushafa was pleased with the opportunity to interact with those whom the interventions are meant for.

    Newly christened “The Iyaloja Market  Fund,” the non interest loan of N50,000 would be given to Phase 1 of market traders, selected from 109 markets across every Senatorial zone in Nigeria. The process of sensitization and enrolment is ahead of the flag-off, next month.

    Edu said President Tinubu truly means well for the country and had promised to remove Nigerians from multi-dimensional poverty and humanitarian crises. Presently he is matching words with action.

    She also used the occasion to deliver a message of the  Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the residents on various social intervention programs of President Tinubu’s administration, creating avenues for feedback where necessary.

    Also, at a community engagement, attended by the community’s traditional rulers, youths,  women, the aged, petty traders, and physically challenged persons, food, and nonfood items were distributed to poor and vulnerable households as part of her birthday celebrations.

    She explained that the food and non-food items presented to them were in tandem with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Tinubu, which aims to reduce multi-dimensional poverty in Nigeria. The Minister also used that medium to monitor the inclusion of older people in the community, who have been captured to be part of the ongoing Conditional Cash Transfer.

    Responding, Mabel Imeh Odiegwu, a tailor, Hassan Yakubu a petty trader, and Esther Isa, also a trader said they were taken aback by the presence of the Minister in the Community as such had never happened before there.

    They expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for the Renewed attention on the poor and vulnerable in the country, noting that with the speed of implementation, a lot was going to change for the better in Nigeria. We commend the Minister who spent her birthday with us in our community. “We are convinced that truly the Renewed Hope Agenda of Mr. President is real and has touched us.”

    The Honorable Minister of Sports Development called on Public Servants in the country to imbibe and cultivate the culture of physical fitness and health consciousness towards ensuring a productive and healthy nation.

    Senator John Owan Enoh gave the charge today when he flagged off  the October Edition of the monthly keep-fit aerobics in preparation for the 2023 Federal Public Service Games (FEPSGA) which  held at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.

    He stated that the Ministry of Sports Development was ready to collaborate and partner with any organisation or body to develop programmes and initiatives that will not only encourage sports development in the country especially in such areas as promotion of physical activity, raise awareness about the importance of fitness, and disseminate valuable health education information to all segments of the  society with a view to improving their health status for optimal service delivery, but also, to provide our teeming youth with job  opportunities so as to alleviate poverty amongst them with a view to  having a safe and peaceful environment for Nigerians.

    He observed that “a healthy nation is a productive nation, and by enhancing fitness and health consciousness amongst the Public Servants we can contribute to the overall well-being of the citizens. Through effective collaboration between the Ministry and FEPSGA, we can come up with initiatives that target both the male and female adults in the Public Service that will encourage them to cultivate a culture of physical fitness and health consciousness”, he said.

    He added that physical fitness and health education are integral  components of a thriving and prosperous nation, and therefore, FEPSGA as a coordinating body in this area should play a leading role in promoting it.

    The Minister explained that one of the vital elements that Nigerians as a people continually miss in the sports sector is the physical fitness component, which he said “is one element that is an aspect that we ignore. It incorporates the generality of people into the sports ecosystem”.

    The Minister informed that the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led Administration is interested in this, which is why he added that the President out of his wisdom created a Ministry of Sports Development to holistically drive this aspect of human development in line with the International standards.

    Senator Enoh noted that the World Health Organization (WHO) some years ago focused on the benefits of fitness and physical activity in its guide to all nations. Its benefits to healthy living are enormous. One of the tasks of FEPSGA therefore, is to come out with advocacy towards encouraging the entire Federal Government workforce to imbibe the culture of physical activity, health consciousness and ideas with a view to adding value to the lives of an average Nigerian by ensuring efficient service delivery in line with the policy thrust of the present administration,” he stressed.

    While commending the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation under the stewardship of Dr Folashade Yemi-Esan and FEPSGA  for initiating and sustaining the programmes even in the face of the current economic  challenges, Senator Owan Enoh called on the workers to take advantage of the programme to be mentally and physically fit for optimal  performance in their respective offices and ease stress as recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO)

    Senator Owan Enoh, who was decorated as the Captain of the 2023 FEPSGA aerobics exercise added that, in 2002, WHO declared the need to imbibe the culture of  physical and mental fitness and called on policy and programme makers across the world to encourage physical fitness in the policy programmes of government.

    While pledging to flag off the  opening ceremony of 2023 FEPSGA Games, the Minister informed that  physical fitness will not only increase the physical and mental state of an individual at the optimal, but also the  productive capacity of the Federal Public Service in Nigeria in line with global realities.

    In her remarks during the exercise, the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation Dr Folasade Yemi-Esan, thanked the Honourable Minister of Sports Development Senator John Owan Enoh for accepting and coming out to flag off the October Edition of the monthly keep fit Aerobics Exercise in preparation for the 2023 Federal Public Service Games.

    Represented by the Director Occupational Hazard and Safety Department in the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation Dr Mrs Comfort Adeosun, Dr Yemi-Esan assured the workers that this year’s pillar which is number six, aims at improving the proposition and well being of the Federal Public Servants in the country.

    She stated that an able workforce will be a productive workforce, adding that “if you are not healthy, your performance will be low, thus affecting efficient service delivery to the citizenry”, Yemi-Esan said.

    Also, the former Minister of Youth and Sports Development Barrister Solomon Dalung while addressing the workers during the exercise advised them to be resolute and not to loose hope in the present administration  but continue to provide unflinching support to the new leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in its resolve to  move the country forward.

    Kachollom also assured that the Ministry of Health is committed to the realization of a healthy workforce that will efficiently drive the policies, programmes and initiatives of the Federal Government for the betterment of Nigerians

    Earlier in his opening remarks,
    President Federation of Public Service Games (FEPSGA) Mr. Aloku Amebi stated that the monthly keep-fit aerobics exercise is one of the cardinal programmes of FEPSGA aimed at improving physical fitness and general well-being of all cadres in the Public Service.

    He stated further that this month’s edition marks the end of the keep-fit aerobics exercise for the year in view of the preparation for the 2023 Annual Public Service Games which is billed to hold in December 2023.
