Earlier this month, Capcom shared the earliest character concept art for Street Fighter 3. There were a lot of odd designs present here that either served as inspiration for something else in Street Fighter later down the road, or has since never been used.
Top Hat Gaming Man recently released a video that adds some extra context to a lot of these character concepts. A lot of the text that labeled these characters have since been translated and were talked about in the video.
The dinosaur-looking fighter was simply labeled as a “Velociraptor.” As noted by Top Hat Gaming Man, this fighter was probably an idea that sprung up due to the recent success of the Jurassic Park film that also inspired characters like Alex in Tekken 2 and Riptor in Killer Instinct.
That combatant that looks similar to Cody from Final Fight (who is also in Street Fighter) was labeled as “Ryu, an American.” Basically, it sounds like this was supposed to be an American version of Ryu that fought using Aikido. It sounds like this was intended to be the main character of Street Fighter 3, a role that was ultimately fulfilled by Alex.
“Poison Hand Man” and “Torogo” both appear to be the influences that eventually resulted in F.A.N.G in Street Fighter 5. Torogo appears to have “wings” of some sort that allow him to fly in the air in a way that would be similar to what F.A.N.G does for his Critical Art and one of his specials.
There’s also a guy that looks like a scientist that wears a monocle and would’ve apparently fought with a cane. Could this have been the inspiration behind JP’s design in Street Fighter 6?
In total, there are 15 character concepts that Top Hat Gaming Man goes over. Hear about them all in the video below:
