A new video appears to show Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) struggling to walk after sustaining “minor” injuries as he tripped and fell while leaving a Senate luncheon on Tuesday.
According to The Associated Press, McConnell tripped and fell on Tuesday while walking out of a Republican Party luncheon with Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.). While McConnell was able to walk back to his office on his own, The Associated Press noted that medical personnel were seen heading toward the Kentucky senator’s office just minutes after his fall.
The Associated Press reported that Barrasso, who is a doctor, said the Senate minority leader was “fine” and was “100 percent” alert after Tuesday’s incident.
In a statement obtained by CNN, a McConnell spokesperson said, “Leader McConnell tripped following lunch. He sustained a minor cut to the face and sprained his wrist. He has been cleared to resume his schedule.”

According to CNN, Sen. John Thune (R-S.D.), who will take over as the Senate majority leader in January, also confirmed that McConnell was “fine” despite Tuesday’s fall. During a Republican press conference on Tuesday, Thune said, “He is fine, he’s in his office, and any other questions about Sen. McConnell I’ll refer to staff.”
The Associated Press reported that McConnell was later seen walking from his office to the Senate chamber for a vote on Tuesday. The outlet noted that the Senate minority leader was wearing a brace on his left wrist and had a bandage on his left cheek.
Conservative activist Riley Gaines shared pictures of McConnell’s injuries Tuesday on social media, tweeting, “Just as Biden needed to step aside, Mitch McConnell should do the same. Kentucky deserves better.”
A video shared on X, formerly Twitter, appears to show McConnell struggling to walk after his fall on Tuesday.
According to The Associated Press, McConnell’s latest health scare incident comes after the Senate minority leader was hospitalized in March of 2023 with a concussion and missed multiple weeks of work after falling in a hotel. Following the concussion incident, McConnell appeared to freeze up during a pair of press conferences last year, requiring the assistance of other senators and congressional staff members.
