50th class

The Chico Enterprise-Record and its Hall of Fame committee are proud to announce this year’s Hall of Fame class of Fran Babich, Larry Allen, Emily Azevedo and Jack Yerman.

Babich was a longtime athletic trainer at Butte College who was a trailblazer in the athletic training space — not just at Butte College, but across the state. She was the first female athletic trainer in California.

Allen, in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, played at Butte College for two seasons and later went on to play for Sonoma State before making his way to the NFL. Allen played 14 seasons with the Dallas Cowboys and San Francisco 49ers, and is considered by one of the best offensive linemen in NFL history.

Azevedo attended Chico High School, competing in track and soccer before running track at UC Davis. Her biggest athletic feat came in 2010, when she placed fifth in the two-woman bobsled for Team USA at the Olympics in Toronto.

Yerman spent his teaching career at Chico High School, but before coming to Butte County, he won a gold medal in the 1960 Olympics for Team USA in the 1,600-meter relay.

Stay tuned for full stories on the Hall of Fame class on April 13, April 20, April 27 and May 4 leading up to the banquet — and for a story on April 22 when nominees from schools will be announced.
