Thomas Tuchel is now officially the new England manager.
After eight years under Gareth Southgate, it’s time for a new permanent appointment in that role.
For the first time since the reign of Fabio Capello, there will be another foreign manager as permanent England manager.
Reaction to the appointment has been mixed.
Not least because it seemed to come out of nowhere.
Earlier this week, there were reports that current Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola was the English Football Association’s (FA) first choice.
That seems to have changed suddenly and evolved into the appointment of Tuchel.
This isn’t the first job that the former Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund manager has been linked to.
Throughout the summer, Thomas Tuchel has been linked with the Manchester United job.
Reports have even emerged more recently that Tuchel was the preferred choice for the United hierarchy if they sacked Erik ten Hag.
Alas, it was not to be.
But it’s been widely reported and assumed that the Manchester United leadership team at least had a conversation with the German coach about the Old Trafford job in the summer.
And that has been addressed in the first press conference that Thomas Tuchel has had today after a question from a journalist in the room.
“Why did you choose England over United who you have been strongly linked with,” the journalist asked before Thomas Tuchel interjected with: “Which would have also been in England.”
“That was basically a decision for this job and not a decision for anything else.
“You will understand I will not comment on individual players today and for sure not comment on any other clubs.”
Although he doesn’t give much away, it’s clear that the very quick and silent approach meshed much better with Tuchel than the very public way that Manchester United seemingly undertook their business in the summer.
The much debated internal review that the club undertook had far more attention to it than what England have undertaken in this appointment.
Of course, it was always highly unlikely that Thomas Tuchel was going to address the situation by naming United in a very public way.
But his comments seem to indicate that he preferred the approach that the FA took as opposed to what happens with MUFC.
And that seems to have won the day for the FA.
With the appointment now confirmed, Manchester United will need to look elsewhere if they decide to move on from Erik ten Hag in the near future.
