Over the years, we’ve seen our fair share of amazing plays for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Super Smash Bros. Melee. Even though Super Smash Bros. Melee is over 20 years old at this point, it’s still played competitively even today.
However, I don’t think I’ve seen anything quite like the clip uploaded by Ycz. During this match, the Samus player, Ycz, was at a stock advantage against a certain Fox player. Of course, Samus was in a bit of a rough spot as Fox managed to push her off stage.
Needless to say, Ycz opted to stall for a better opportunity to return to the stage. Since they were playing on the Yoshi’s Story stage, the cloud platform was nearly ready to make an appearance on the right side of the stage.
Assuming Samus is nearby, the explosion from Samus’ down special will force the character into her ball state, providing a little bounce to aid in recovery. Due to his linear recovery, Fox could do nothing to interact with Samus from this far off stage… or so we all thought.
It just so happened that a Shy Guy was flying near this part of the stage. While keeping up with a typical edge hogging tactic, Fox hit the Shy Guy with a Shine.
As such, the Shy Guy hazard was flung directly at Samus’ bomb. This caused it to explode earlier than intended, which completely screwed up Samus’ recovery. The shock of the situation caused Ycz to plummet to the bottom blast zone even though he still had his double jump readily available.
While it’d be fun to imagine that this was a tactic intentionally employed by the Fox user, it more than likely happened purely by accident. Still, they played it off cool and made it seem like it was all according to plan.
