Thilo Kehrer has nightmare Premier League debut as West Ham continue shocking record against Brighton to start season with third straight defeat

Thilo Kehrer had a moment to forget just 20 minutes into his Premier League debut for West Ham as they lost 2-0 to Brighton.

The centre-back conceded a penalty early in the first half to give the Seagulls the advantage before Leandro Trossard made sure they would leave with all three points.

The 25-year-old was a £10.1million summer signing from Paris Saint-Germain and was named in the Hammers starting XI by David Moyes for the visit of Brighton on Sunday.

However, just 20 minutes into the match, his clumsy challenge on Danny Welbeck handed the Seagulls a penalty.

Alexis Mac Allister stepped up an converted the spot-kick to give the visitors the 1-0 lead.

VAR checked the incident to see if the tackle had occurred inside the area.

It was tight and replays showed contact came right on the edge of the penalty box, therefore the decision stood.

Kehrer was given a yellow card as he had made an attempt to play the ball, even though it was poorly timed.

The incident was discussed by Sam Matterface and Perry Groves on the Sunday Session on talkSPORT.

Matterface said: “If it was outside the box it would have been a sending off, inside the box you have the double jeopardy law they ask the question if he’s made a genuine attempt to play the ball.”

Groves added: “I think Kehrer can say he attempted to play the ball. It’s an awful tackle as he went with his left foot.

“Trossard rolls in Danny Welbeck and he gets that toe poke. Do you know what made up Anthony Taylor’s mind? He tries to stay on his feet.

“That’s a shocking challenge.”

Things did not improve for the Hammers with Trossard then doubling their lead after 66 minutes when he raced through and fired past Lukasz Fabianski.

Brighton goalkeeper Robert Sanchez was called upon in the latter stages of the game to make a couple of fine close range saves.

West Ham have now not won a Premier League meeting between the two sides in 11 attempts and the latest defeat sees them sink to bottom of the table.

They have lost their first three games of the season, meanwhile Brighton climb to fourth having taken seven points from their opening fixtures.
