Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is a vast game that sports a roster of 86 characters, mostly thanks to its “Everyone Is Here” theme. Despite this impressive milestone for the franchise, there are still plenty of newcomers that the fans would like to see join the fray at some point.
Luminosity Gaming recently released their top 50 players list for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. This indicated who the best players in the world are right now. What interests us about this list, however, is that each competitor was also asked about which character they’d like to see represented in Super Smash Bros. in the future.
It’s actually pretty incredible that each of the top 10 best competitors were each able to come up for a unique character on this list. Despite how far the Super Smash Bros. series has come, it seems that there’s still a ton of potential for surprises.
Although Sonic the Hedgehog has become more and more infamous within the competitive community as time has gone on, Shadow the Hedgehog appeared on this list more than any other character. In total, there were five players that expressed in interest in seeing Shadow getting promoted from an Assist Trophy to a playable fighter.
Characters like Paper Mario, Leon S. Kennedy, and 2B also appeared pretty frequently on this list. Considering their popularity, they seem like good candidates for the next entry in the Super Smash Bros. series.
Of course, there were also a number of bizarre picks such as Apollo Creed from the Rocky Balboa movies, Goku from Dragon Ball, and Eren Yaeger from Attack on Titan. Unfortunately for fans of these ideas, Masahiro Sakurai has been adamant that the Super Smash Bros. series will always be focused on video game icons, which excludes the possibility of Goku ever joining the roster.
Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa recently declared plans for the Switch successor to be revealed within this fiscal year. In other words, we should learn more details about Nintendo’s next console sometime before March 31, 2025.
Curiously, Sakurai has also noted that he’s been working on a secret game project since April 2022. He apparently finished the game proposal for this project back in July 2021 while he was still working on the Kazuya Mishima and Sora DLC for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
Needless to say, there are plenty of reasons to speculate that the next entry in the Super Smash Bros. series is already being planned for and worked on. Indeed, Nintendo has always managed to release a new iteration in the series for every console since it first debuted on the Nintendo 64.
With all this in mind, now feels like the perfect time for fans to start talking about the possibilities surrounding their own personal wish lists. Whether this next game ends up being “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Deluxe” or a brand new entry entirely, we’re almost certainly going to see a few new faces on the character select screen that will probably make at least a few of these players happy.
