It’s in some part of human nature to be adverse to change for something not looking, feeling, tasting, or acting like how we remembered, but said change can often times bring us things we didn’t know we wanted before.
Fighting games seem to go through phases where they either want to harken back to the classics or attempt to shake up the norms, which can lead to great new takes on the icons of our genre.
MrTopTenList recently dropped his latest list of what he considers to be the 10 best fighter redesigns that successfully changed up a character’s costume, age, attitude or even fighting style pulling from over 30 years of history.
The ranks actually start out with someone many probably wouldn’t expect Mukuro from The Last Blade 2 at number 10, but he certainly deserves to be on here.
Starting out as the crazed killer Shikyoh in the first game, he comes back as the undead Mukuro with his head wrapped in bandages, missing teeth and losing most of his sense of self to become a true monster.
Number 9 also sticks with SNK going with Robert Garcia moving from a secondary protagonist to the leading man of Art of Fighting 3 sporting a dapper new outfit, so it’ll be interesting to see what they do for the new Art of Fighting game in the works.
We won’t spoil the rest of the picks, but expect to see some familiar faces from Tekken, Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Virtua Fighter, Guilty Gear, Fatal Fury and more where only one representative per series can appear.
