The rumored 50 or so characters that were considered for Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 but got cut

When Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3’s development had concluded, there was a giant roster of 50 characters consisting of characters from both Marvel and Capcom’s intellectual properties. However, Ryota Nittsuma, producer for Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, had originally envisioned over 100 characters for UMvC3’s roster.

Jake Jakers recently released a video talking about a bunch of fighters that were considered for UMvC3, but ultimately got cut. We know for sure that some of these fighters were worked on at certain points, but others are only rumored to have been considered. Much of this video appears to be based on a Reddit post from a few years ago that talks about what happened with many of these situations.

Juggernaut had a chance of making the roster, but Capcom was told that they had to choose between either having the Juggernaut or the Sentinel. Considering how iconic Sentinel was to the Marvel vs. Capcom series, Juggernaut lost his spot to the Sentinel.

Multiple Man, Johnny Storm, Doc Ock, Spiral, and Fou-Lu were all cut either due to technical difficulties with their development or time constraints. We’ve actually heard from Nittsuma himself that Doc Ock had to be cut late in vanilla Marvel vs. Capcom 3’s development due to technical issues involving his metallic tentacles.

Eight more characters were also planned for the Ultimate version of the game, but were unfortunately cut due to the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami disasters. These situations put development on hold, but didn’t stop Marvel from rushing Capcom’s development process. Supposedly, Jon Talbain from the Darkstalkers series was one of these characters that didn’t make it in time as a result of all this.
