If you need a refresher on why you the never say die attitude is a must in tournaments, look no further than this last-millisecond tournament win by Super Smash Bros. heavyweight Liquid|Hungrybox.
We find ourselves on the winner’s side of the fourth round of Coinbase’s recent Coinbox event, where Hungrybox’s Jigglypuff is in hot water against LG|Sonix’s Sonic. Both characters are on their final stock, but Puff has already accrued a deadly 128% damage and there’s 10 seconds left on the clock.
For those that don’t know Sonix is the most successful competitive Sonic player of all time, and currently has tons of momentum with wins at both Get On My Level and Port Priority this year.
On top of that, Sonic’s speed an maneuverability make him one of the best keep away characters in on Smash’s 80-some character roster, while Jigglypuff’s balloon-like nature makes her generally more floaty, slow, and not at all cut out to run down the blue hedgehog for a KO in fewer than 10 seconds.
With his work more than cut out for him, Hungrybox does his best to try to land a hit and at least get his foe’s health above the measly 9% it’s currently at. Sonix easily navigates the stage and evades a few advances by Hbox, and the announcer’s voice may as well be saying “Congrats to Sonix for advancing” instead of the five second final countdown that’s started.
It isn’t until the two second mark that Jigglypuff finally finds a hit that he’s able to convert into another and then into the character’s devastating Sleep attack. The screen flashes red, Sonic goes flying, and the match ends with less than half a second to spare.
Hbox proceeds to manifest the energy perfectly as he leaps up and starts screaming. Check it all out here:

Did you know that if you KO off the top with five seconds or fewer remaining in a Smash Ultimate match you won’t get the background or foreground KO animations so as to avoid robbing people of wins via time over?
