The Nintendo Switch 2 has reportedly been delayed until 2025

We’ve been hearing rumors for the past couple of years about Nintendo’s next console that’s supposed to follow after the Switch. Rather than reinventing the wheel, the rumored “Nintendo Switch 2” is slated to be a direct upgrade over the previous console.

As of right now, Nintendo has yet to officially announce the Switch 2, though it feels like it’s one of the worst kept secrets in the gaming industry right now. Previously, we heard word that the company was preparing for a launch in September 2024, but new rumors are now suggesting that this release window may be getting pushed back.

Pedro Henrique Lutti Lippe is claiming on Twitter that he has consulted five separate sources across three different continents about what’s going on with the rumored Nintendo Switch 2. According to him, the Nintendo Switch 2 is now slated to be released in 2025.

Video Games Chronicle, Eurogamer, and Bloomberg have now all independently corroborated what Pedro Henrique Lutti Lippe has said through their own sources. One source even told Bloomberg that Nintendo is telling publishing executives not to expect the console until March 2025 at the earliest.

Unsurprisingly, a Nintendo spokesperson had no official comments to provide regarding the rumored delay when asked. It’s also still unknown as to when Nintendo will even be willing to officially announce the Nintendo Switch follow up.

According to both VGC and Eurogamer, the supposed reason behind this decision is to ensure the Nintendo Switch 2 has plenty of first-party software at launch. If this is true, then we should expect plenty of games for the Switch 2 in addition to what’s also playable on the Switch considering the other rumor that the Switch 2 will be backwards compatible.

By this point, the Switch has topped 139.36 million lifetime sales, making it the third-most successful gaming device after the Nintendo DS (154.02 million) and the PlayStation 2 (155.0 million). It would seem that Nintendo is hoping to push the momentum into the Switch 2’s lifetime sales by enticing consumers to buy early.

The best-selling games on the Nintendo Switch are Mario Kart 8 Deluxe (60.58 million), Animal Crossing: New Horizons (44.79 million), Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (33.67 million), The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (31.61 million), and Super Mario Odyssey (27.65 million). One of the big games that’s being rumored for the Switch 2 is some sort of open world Mario adventure game, which is supposed to be even bigger than Super Mario Odyssey.

If Nintendo really is pushing for the strongest possible first-party software at or near launch, this could potentially be good news for fans of the Super Smash Bros. series as it seems like it’d be a frontrunner for the type of series that Nintendo will want to bring back for the Switch 2

However, this does make us wonder what Nintendo is planning to do with the Switch in the meantime. As of right now, the big games announced right now for 2024 are Princess Peach: Showtime! and Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door (a remake).

Nintendo has traditionally held a Nintendo Direct in the month of February for most of the past few years, though this curiously hasn’t happened yet. It was previously rumored that a Partner Showcase would be happening on February 15 as Nintendo prepared for the Switch 2 announcement in March, but that Partner Showcase never came to be.

Needless to say, it’s entirely unclear as to what Nintendo’s plans are right now. More than likely, we probably have more remasters and remakes in the future for the Nintendo Switch to hold us over.

Here’s hoping that we at least get the announcement of the Switch 2 sometime soon.
