Unit 8200, Israel’s most controversial spy agency, has also at the forefront of both cyber warfare and surveillance, and explains that the unit is notorious for creating tools such as the AI-powered “kill list” that was used to suggest and target tens of thousands of people, including women and children, for assassination in Gaza. Beyond warfare, Unit 8200’s influence extends into the tech world, with some of the Unit’s alumni having gone on to create some of the world’s most downloaded apps and most significant technology companies, including those that control global surveillance tools like Pegasus. The journalist exposes the chilling extent to which this spy agency compiles data on Palestinians for the purpose of blackmail and control.
The presence of these former Israeli intelligence operatives in major American media outlets raises serious ethical questions about journalistic integrity and the story highlights how these outlets continue to hire Israeli ex-spies without disclosing their backgrounds to the public to reinforce a pro-Israel narrative and stifle any criticism of the illegal occupation.
