Viper needs to come back, and she needs to be a full villain

Though it was clearly Juri that took the lion’s share of fan appreciation when it came to the new characters introduced in Street Fighter 4, Crimson Viper also became a fan favorite who will almost certainly appear on a playable roster again in the future.

Intelligent, attractive, able, and with a variety of awesome secret agent gadgets and weapons at her disposal, Viper has proved one of the coolest characters in Street Fighter canon. She’s widely regarded as one of the good guys, but Viper most definitely has a streak of evil in her, and that came through very clearly in a particular fight wherein she battered, groped, and nearly killed Cammy… just to try to get under the skin of someone else.

We have footage of this fight (thanks for the upload, RajmanHDGaming) but you’ll most certainly want context before you watch.

This comes from the Street Fighter 4 film “The Ties That Bind,” that details the events leading up to what we see play out in the game. C. Viper is working for the evil Shadaloo Intimidation Network organization, but this is actually a facade as she’s secretly a good guy working for the CIA with aims to bring down S.I.N.

S.I.N. wants Ryu because he has massive power potential, specifically when he taps into the Satsui No Hado (surge of murderous intent), and so Viper is tasked with searching out, testing the power of, and potentially kidnapping Ryu.

The two meet for the first time at an abandoned house, but before anything can get started, Cammy shows up to warn Ryu of Viper’s intentions. She attacks Viper and gets just absolutely destroyed as the new Street Fighter totally outclasses her.

Seeing that Cammy is a friend of Ryu’s, Viper decides to try to invoke Ryu’s evil killing intent by beating and torturing Cammy. The Killer Bee gets one cheap shot in, but then Viper proceeds to grab her foe by the foot, deliver an electrified punch to her abdomen, kick her directly in the temple, and then grab her by the breast and electrify her whole body.

This sequence has a slight but clear sexual component to it. The animators surely could have had Viper grab Cammy’s neck or face instead of her leg and breast, but it feels as though the sprinkling of sexuality invokes even more emotional reaction out of the scene.

Indeed this sequence is noted to be the “most watched” segment of the whole video when you hover over the timeline controls, for whatever that’s worth.

This really puts Viper in a villainous light, and she’s not done yet. She drops Cammy to the ground and proceeds to place one of her (high) heels on her temple, slowly twisting back and forth to remind everyone of the possible carnage that’s all but about to happen.

She goads Ryu while doing this, and then punts Cammy some 30 feet via a flaming forehead kick. This isn’t Mortal Kombat, but even without the use of gore, this beat down feels even more impactful than many of the insanely violent moments we’ve seen from that franchise.

The battle continues as Viper starts to get what she’s there for, but we’ll let you watch and see how things play out for yourself. For us, seeing how capable good guy fan favorite Viper is of brutality was eye-opening. She plays the role of villain well, and we’d like to see her come back as one soon. Do you agree?
