The big question surrounding Ed's simple inputs in Street Fighter 6 has finally been answered

Capcom has finally let the blonde haired cat out of the bag with their big Street Fighter 6 gameplay reveal of Ed yesterday. The company released a new trailer for the game that showcases what all the upcoming DLC character is capable of in the latest entry of the long-running fighting game franchise.

Though we saw a teaser trailer for Ed previously that showed some of his World Tour story line play out, the specifics of his actual gameplay remained a mystery until last night. With his reveal, Capcom also finally answered the major question the fighting game community has been asking about Ed this whole time: What will become of his simple inputs from Street Fighter 5 here in Street Fighter 6?

Those familiar with Ed from Street Fighter 5 know that the DLC character’s main trait was his simple inputs. Basically, Ed’s special move inputs were all double button presses and single direction plus a button, meaning he didn’t have to perform his maneuvers with quarter-circles or Dragon Punch motions.

Street Fighter 6 essentially adopted that same concept, but for the entirety of the Modern control scheme, and this had fans wondering what they’d do with Ed in this game considering his main gimmick was now a common thing.

The answer is, Capcom designed Ed in Street Fighter 6 to have traditional fighting game inputs when he is in Classic mode. For Modern, he returns back to the simple inputs he had in Street Fighter 5.

“We’ve seen comments asking how Ed will work with Modern Controls since his inputs were already simplified in Street Fighter V,” Capcom explained in the latest PS Blog featuring Ed. “We decided to keep his simplified inputs and incorporated them in his Modern Controls while creating expanded inputs for his Classic Controls.

“Ed now has quarter-circle and dragon-punch inputs for his special moves in Classic. What an edge lord, right?” Capcom concluded.

Now that we’ve seen the official Ed gameplay trailer, it appears that Capcom has made another interesting design choice for Street Fighter 6’s next DLC fighter. This time around, Ed’s attacks completely consist of punches (with the exception of level 2 super), meaning he has no kick attacks.

Capcom notes that this was done to further respect his background as a traditional boxer.

Ed is set for release on February 27 for those who purchased the Year 1 Character Pass or have the Deluxe/Ultimate Edition of Street Fighter 6. Players will also be able to purchase Ed as a standalone DLC character for 350 Fighter Coins, which equates to around $7 USD.
