Manchester United are looking to transform their squad next year with the side adjusting to a new set-up under Ruben Amorim.
The current squad was assembled for Erik ten Hag’s playstyle, utilising a 4-2-3-1 formation. However, Amorim’s favoured system operates in a 3-4-3, with a very different identity to ten Hag.
The United executives have been very confident that the range of talent at the club can adjust to fit Amorim’s set-up.
Midfielders like Manuel Ugarte and Kobbie Mainoo fit into the centre of the middle four, whilst centre-backs like Matthijs de Ligt, Lisandro Martinez and Leny Yoro work perfectly as a back three.
Elsewhere minor adjustments are needed, as seen with Noussair Mazraoui’s impressive showing in the back three this week.
However, Amorim is certain that three key areas need to be addressed next year to ensure success with his set-up.
The Athletic has reported that Amorim is looking for ideal candidates to play on both flanks and is also in need of another striker.
Manchester United search for wing-backs and a striker
With the previous set-up, United utilised full-backs and wingers, players like Luke Shaw and Diogo Dalot in full-back, and Amad Diallo and Alejandro Garnacho on the wings.
However, Amorim likes to merge the two to have a dynamic pair of wing-backs engaging in both attack and defence.
Whilst he’s looking at current squad members like Dalot and Diallo converting to these roles, other players like Sporting’s Geovany Quenda and Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies have also been highlighted as being able to slot straight in.
Up top, Amorim is working on getting Marcus Rashford back to his goal-scoring days as a striker, whilst also bringing the potential out of Rasmus Hojlund to be a formidable force in front of goal.
However, this doesn’t rule out the likes of Viktor Gyokeres coming in who has said that he wants to follow Amorim to United to continue developing under his former manager.
With United having a limited transfer budget going forward, however, big-money signings could well be a thing of the past unless United can make some major sales to generate the funds.
