Manchester United have been on their USA tour in pre-season.
The Red Devils have had a number of injury problems in the backline.
This has meant that some youngsters have had to step in to cover at times.
Youngsters impress in pre-season
Toby Collyer, Rhys Bennett and Ethan Wheatley have all played their fair share of minutes on the pitch.
Collyer, especially, has caught the eye. It’s believed his performances have been so impressive that he’s set to start in the Community Shield against Manchester City.
But he’s not the only one who has caught the eye.
Harry Amass has been winning plaudits for the performances he’s put in at left-back.
Amass has received plenty of game time due to the absence of Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia to injury.
He even got an assist in the club’s win against Real Betis when his cross was put away by Amad Diallo.
For followers of United’s academy, this is not a surprise.
The 17-year-old has been earmarked as one for the future for quite a while now.
Usually, players of that age are sent out on loan to get more first-team experience.
However, it seems that the youngster is set to stay at Old Trafford.
Harry Amass set for stay
According to The Athletic, Harry Amass is expected to stay at Manchester United for this season.
United have been linked with bringing in other left-backs recently.
The most recent reports have even claimed that Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell is one of their targets.
However, it seems that the club’s hierarchy have confidence in Amass’ ability and believe that he’d be best served to stay at Old Trafford this season.
With Luke Shaw the undoubted number one, Amass will likely be challenging Tyrell Malacia for that backup spot.
But with both Shaw and Malacia suffering from long term injuries, Amass could be getting more first team minutes than he’d have probably imagined.
