The 56-year NFL curse that even Tom Brady hasn't been able to break

Not even Tampa Bay Buccaneers powerhouse quarterback Tom Brady could counter one of the heaviest hidden curses in the NFL’s Super Bowl era.

At 44 years of age, Brady led the league in yards per pass for the fourth time in his career, however, on none of these occasions was he able to win the Super Bowl, the seven times he managed to lift the Vince Lombardi Trophy, the veteran quarterback was not the NFL’s leading passer.

Super Bowl LVI will be no exception

But beyond Brady, the fact is blunt and even lapidary, in the 56 seasons in the Super Bowl era, the leader in yards per pass during the NFL regular season has not been crowned champion.

Brady, who threw for a personal-high 5,316 yards in the 2021 season, was eliminated by the Los Angeles Rams by a score of 30-27 last Sunday during the Divisional Round of the NFL playoffs.

The other three times Brady was the NFL’s all-time passing leader were in the 2005, 2007 and 2017 seasons, all with the New England Patriots.

What happened to Brady when he was leading passer?

In 2005, Brady suffered his first postseason loss in a 27-13 loss to the Denver Broncos. In 2007, the Pats went undefeated (16-0) in the regular season only to fall in Super Bowl XLII 17-14 to the New York Giants. In 2017, Brady made it to Super Bowl LII which was won by the Philadelphia Eagles 41-33.

The cases are multiple and include five quarterbacks (including the two times it happened with Tom Brady) that the NFL’s leading passer reached the Super Bowl and, in all of them, ended up defeated, however, the most curious case is that of Drew Brees, who leads this department with seven years being the leader in yards per pass in the NFL, and in the 2009 season in which he won with the New Orleans Saints the Super Bowl XLIV against the Indianapolis Colts, the leading passer in the NFL was Matt Schaub.
