Derek Chisora is an unpredictable character and no one is more aware of that than his promoter, Eddie Hearn.
On Saturday night, Chisora will have a rematch with Kubrat Pulev and the build-up to the fight has been interesting to say the least, with ‘Del Boy’ telling his opponent he has a ‘hard on’ for their fight, while he gave a fan a wad of cash after winning musical chairs at his public workout.
While this is undoubtedly bizarre behaviour, it is nothing out of the ordinary for Chisora, while one of the times we saw the Brit at his most volatile was before his first fight with fierce rival, Dillian Whyte in 2016.
Hearn recounted a hilarious story about the build-up, telling Ladbible: “When we made the Dillian Whyte vs Derek Chisora fight, we turned up at the press conference and I thought, these two can’t stand each other.
“They were actually DMing… and saying that they were going to come over to each others houses and bash each other up and it was bad.
“So, at the presser I thought it was going to be wild. I went to the press conference and Dillian Whyte was saying ‘I’m going to do this and this and smash him up,’ so I said to Derek, ‘what are you going to say about that? He’s sticking it on you.’
“He went: ‘I’m not selling this press conference for you, you’re not paying me enough money.’ This is on the mic and he didn’t want a pay-per-view bonus, he just wanted as much money as possible.
“So I said, ‘Derek, there’s been a lot of bad blood’ and he went, ‘no bad blood, I ain’t interested in talking.’ So, I finished the interview and I said, ‘Derek, you can’t do this, you’re getting a fortune, you need to talk and sell the fight.’”

The Matchroom Chairman then explained the boxer’s eye was drawn to his wrist.
He continued: “Then he asked for a pay-per-view bonus and I said, ‘but you didn’t want a pay-per-view bonus.’ So, he said, ‘what watch is that?’ I I told him it was a Rolex Sky Dweller and he said, ‘Well, give me that watch and I’ll sell the fight.’”
Considering they can cost about £30,000, Hearn wasn’t keen.
“I said, ‘No, I won’t give you that watch, but I’ll tell you what I will do – if this show does over 300,000 buys, I’ll buy you a Rolex Sky Dweller.’
Chisora seemed happy enough and then they headed to Sky Sports’ studios to film ‘The Gloves Are Off’.
“Within two minutes, they had thrown glasses at each other, they were rolling on the floor and biting each other,” Hearn added.
The incentive clearly worked, as the promotional build-up was almost as electric as the fight itself, which delivered ample entertainment for those who bought it.
Both men battled it out relentlessly throwing bombs over 12 rounds in a fight of the year contender and Chisora was slightly unlucky to lose by split decision, but it set up what was an even more lucrative rematch in 2018 when ‘Del Boy’ was knocked out.
“[The fight] done well over 300,000 buys,” Hearn added, “and I bought him a Rolex Sky Dweller and I think he sold it the next day, but that’s ‘Del Boy’.”
