Street Fighter 6’s next big DLC character is joining the game later this month. It won’t be long now before players everywhere are able to get their hands on the mainline series’ first ever guest fighter, Terry Bogard of Fatal Fury and King of Fighters fame, and there are still things we haven’t quite learned about him just yet.
Capcom continues to reveal details about Mr. Bogard and his fighting style in Street Fighter 6, and through a recent article from 4Gamer divulged the first details we’ve heard about how Terry is going to function with Modern Controls.
The entry featured a breakdown of Terry’s abilities in Street Fighter 6, which includes information about each of his special moves, supers, and the like. This article was written entirely in Japanese, but thanks to the translation work of our very own Nicholas “MajinTenshinhan” Taylor, we have the details in English to look over.
By this point, most people already know about some of Terry’s unique abilities, including his special level 2 super that can be extended for more hits and damage by using Drive Gauge and an additional bar of super meter. However, one thing we haven’t really heard a lot about is what Terry’s tool kit looks like when Modern Controls are selected.
With Street Fighter 6’s Modern Control option, players are able to get some stark advantages in battle such as doing away with complicated inputs for special moves and super attacks. In Modern, these attacks can be performed with the tap of a single button or a single direction + a single button, but the drawback is that they deal less damage and the character as a whole loses access to certain moves due to their controls being simplified.
In this case, we now learn what things Terry loses access to, and part of his loses include some very important footsies tools.
4Gamer reports that Terry completely loses access to both his standing medium kick and his crouching medium punch, both of which appear to be strong options in the neutral/footsies game. Standing medium kick is a long-range poke that acts as a swift check to stop the opponent from advancing, while crouching medium punch has been shown in various gameplay clips to be a combo starter and extender.
The article outright notes that these two omissions from Terry’s move set do hurt his overall effectiveness, however, he still has the ability to use crouching medium kick in Modern and this normal is Drive cancellable making it a powerful tool in neutral in and of itself.
We found out fairly early on that Terry has a whopping seven special moves at his disposal in Street Fighter 6, but in Modern only four of them are mapped to the simple inputs. The moves that get modernized for him are Power Wave, Rising Tackle, Crack Shoot, and Power Charge, though the rest of his special moves can still be performed by doing the traditional move inputs while using Modern Controls.
Below is the direct translation from 4Gamer’s article with all of the details on Modern Terry in Street Fighter 6:
Regarding Modern Controls
If you pick Modern controls for Terry, the special moves available to you are these four moves: Power Wave (special button), Rising Tackle (forward special button), Crack Shoot (back special button) and Power Charge (down special button). If you wish to use Round Wave, Quick Burn or Burn Knuckle, you will have to do the inputs.
Losing powerful neutral moves like his crouching medium punch and standing medium kick which is great for checking opponents hurts a bit, but since Terry’s crouching medium kick is drive cancellable it still feels like even on Modern Controls he’s a threat in the mid-range.
As for his close range, due to the large variety of target combos and that he can use the assist button + heavy attack to use the easily hit confirmable standing heavy punch, it didn’t feel like Modern really made him lose much of his combo capability or variety. For people who are interested in Terry but don’t feel very confident in doing inputs, he feels like a character where Modern Controls might be a fine way to learn him.
