After 37 years Capcom has finally decided to welcome a guest onto a Street Fighter roster, and it’s clear this is a decision they’ve not made lightly as they’re going out of their way to make Terry Bogard’s Street Fighter 6 appearance memorable for fans on every front.
The Fatal Fury poster boy isn’t set to join Street Fighter 6 as DLC until September 24 but he is available to play on a Gamescom demo build right now. Attendees in Germany have been sneaking footage of the South Town Hero onto X and someone has shared the newcomer’s character select screen animation with us, and like just about everything else we’ve seen for him thus far, it’s top tier.
Capcom has come a long way since the days of static thumbnail faces that may or may not change in color hue when players choose their characters. Now in Street Fighter 6 the character select is housed in a graffiti filled garage and the avatars are seen performing some kind of casual action while they wait to be chosen or not.
Some fighters are extremely basic as Ryu and Ken maneuver from resting to ready poses, but others like Juri and Chun-Li get additional props as the former sits upon baggage and the latter perches atop a massive tire while she reads her phone.
Developers clearly put a little extra time and thought into Terry’s character select screen animation as when you hover over him as a potential pick you’ll see him with his back to you as he plays on an old Neo Geo cabinet.
This is a callback to the days of the arcades when Street Fighter and Fatal Fury were just starting out. SNK made a brilliant marketing move by designing their Neo Geo cabinets to stand out with bright red paint and consistent decal markings. When you saw one of these you knew you were in for some top tier, SNK-brand fun.
