Terence Crawford has confirmed he will fight David Avanesyan after negotiations for a showdown with Errol Spence Jr fell through.

The undisputed WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO welterweight world title clash now seems destined to be confined to the scrap heat with Crawford instead making a make a voluntary defence of his WBO 147lb belt.

Crawford’s only fight of 2022 will be against Avanesyan

Crawford has not fought since beating Shawn Porter in 2021, becoming the first man to do stop him.

‘Bud’ (38-0) became a free agent after that bout which finally allowed him to pursue the Spence bout.

But despite the pair finally agreeing terms, negotiations fell through and Crawford will instead face Avanesyan in December.

Crawford vs Avanesyan: What has been said?

I’m excited about this opportunity,” Crawford told ESPN about his fight with Avanesyan, who holds a big win over British fighter Josh Kelly.

“I was really looking forward to the Errol Spence fight. I started communicating with Al Haymon and PBC back in June. And unfortunately, they represent a fighter in Errol Spence who didn’t want the fight as bad as I did.”

Crawford explained why he decided to take an interim fight rather than wait to face Spence: “I agreed to all of their bulls*** and they’ve been dragging their a** for months.

“Spence was nowhere to be found while I was trying to make the deal. I explained to Al Haymon and Errol that I was going to fight before the end of the year.

“David Avanesyan is a very tough task. He’s knocked out his last six opponents and this guy is dangerous. Once I’m successful against Avanesyan, my plan is still the same – whoop Errol Spence’s a**.”
