The highly anticipated Tekken 8 officially launched Thursday to the delight of many in the fighting game community, but not all is well at the latest King of Iron Fist Tournament, at least not when it comes to online aspects.
Multiple reports of matchmaking issues as players tried to compete in and spectate one another’s matches have emerged on fighting game social media, but developers at Bandai Namco are apparently working on a fix. Producer Katsuhiro Harada offered a statement on the matter.
Heavy traffic is to be expected on launch day for such an anticipated game as Tekken 8, but it seems the servers are, in some capacity, unable to keep up with demands.
Harada notes that these errors are specifically due to “heavy access to the to the matching & competition servers.” You can read his full statement via the tweet below:
We are currently experiencing an error during online matching & spectating due to heavy access to the matching & competition servers.
We are currently working on resolving this issue. Thank you for your patience. https://t.co/r5BAFvn7kV— Katsuhiro Harada (@Harada_TEKKEN) January 26, 2024
Among those reporting difficulties include Justin Wong, who laments not being able to play:
How does Under Night and Tekken 8 on launch have these issues…
IT MAKES ME SO SAD I JUST WANNA PLAY

It seems the issues tend to happen when players try to select “rematch” in the midst of an online set. Here’s a relatively detailed report on the experience of one user:
Bro, I might refund Tekken 8. This is VERY unacceptable. I can understand if the servers went out. But it actually crashes the game when you get a match. And if you do get in and you wanna rematch, it then kicks both of you out to find someone else till it crashes again.

We at EventHubs also experienced issues while trying to play online today.
