Supreme Court to hear APC’s appeal challenging legality of Rivers LGA election

The Supreme Court will later on Monday hear two appeals filed by the All Progressives Congress (APC) challenging the legality of the local government election held in Rivers State last year.

A five-member apex court panel led by Justice Uwani Abba-Aji had directed all parties involved in the suit to submit and exchange their legal arguments before February 10 (today).

The APC is challenging the Court of Appeal ruling which reversed an earlier decision by Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court, Abuja, which restrained the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from releasing voters’ register to the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) to conduct the election.

Justice Lifu had in his ruling on an application filed by the APC held that RSIEC did not meet the guidelines on the conduct of the election.

However, the appellate court set aside the verdict because the lower court lacked the jurisdiction to hear the case.
