Super Smash Bros. Ultimate just received a new update and here are the patch notes

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate fans would really love to see the game get a fresh balance patch at some point. Though it’s been a while since the game has stopped seeing content support, just yesterday Nintendo released a new update for the game — though it’s not quite for what people hope it would be.

As of yesterday, the game has been brought up to Ver. 13.0.2, and Nintendo released patch notes and directions on how to get this update installed.

As you may have already guessed based on some of the wording in this article and the above image, the new Super Smash Bros. Ultimate patch essentially makes way for the upcoming Sora amiibo. Compatibility for the figure has been introduced into the game now, though the actual amiibo itself has yet to be released.

“On February 14, 2024, a new software update for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate became available for download,” reads the official post from Nintendo. “Please take a moment to download and install this update while your Nintendo Switch console is connected to the Internet.”

The directions on how to get this update installed are fairly straightforward. Basically, you’ll want your Nintendo Switch to be connected to the internet, then you’ll want to find the icon for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate on the home screen — but don’t launch it just yet.

From there, just press the + or – button on your controller, select “Software Update,” then hit “Via the Internet,” and your new Smash Ultimate patch should begin downloading.

The official patch notes for the Ver. 13.0.2 update are very short. Literally, what we have in this patch is functionality for the Sora amiibo, and… that’s it.

On the page that contains the latest Super Smash Bros. Ultimate patch notes, Nintendo has also provided an update history list. We see that the game’s most recent update before yesterday’s came all the way back in December 2021 and it did actually include balance changes.

At this point, it has been over two years since Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has received any balance updates. As it stands right now, with the dominance of characters like Steve and how many players still dislike fighting him, the game really could use at least one final balance patch to smooth things over for a game that is still very popular.

Right now, though, there is no concrete information about the next Super Smash Bros. game nor any kind of future content support for Ultimate. There have been a lot of rumors, however, about the Nintendo Switch 2, and that it could be seeing its official reveal soon.

On top of the Switch 2’s potential announcement, there have also been signs that a new Super Smash Bros. title (possibly a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Deluxe) could be in the works for the upcoming new hardware.

Super Smash Bros. series creator Masahiro Sakurai recently made an interesting statement in which he indicated that he’s still creating video games despite stating previously that he is semi-retired from the business. What’s also curious is that Sakurai noted he’d be stepping away from his YouTube channel some time this year, and with it being one of his main focuses in recent times, fans are also speculating that he could be doing so in exchange for putting more attention and work into developing games again.
