Introducing Byte Breakers
Odyssey Interactive, the team behind the fun but ill-fated Omega Strikers, has a bold new venture in development. We call it bold because it aims to meld together two genres from opposite corners of the gaming world: platform fighters a la Super Smash Bros., and battle royales a la Fortnite.
Byte Breakers is only in prototype status right now (meaning it’s not yet far enough long to guarantee it’ll actually get made) but developers have released an enticing new trailer in which they showcase gameplay and discuss some particulars behind the concept. Sound interesting? If you’re in North America you have a chance to play it this Friday.
Details are still a little sparse, but the gist of Byte Breakers is that you’ll team up with a partner as you try to be the last duo standing amid a total of 40 players. You’ll be platform fighting as you try to eliminate opponents, presumably by reducing their health to 0 or by knocking them into the void.
Sounds fairly Super Smash Bros. thus far, we know, but an ever expanding “glitch zone” threatens to engulf any and all competitors. Giant maps become increasingly smaller as the glitch zone grows, ushering remaining players closer to one another until just one team is left to be declared the victors.
You can choose to immediately jump into the fray, trying to eliminate as many opponents as possible early on, or scavenge a bit for power ups that you can share with your partner. If goes down, fret not, your partner can drag your lifeless corpse to a respawn beacon for a full revival.
