Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has announced the death of his mother barely two months after losing his father.
It would be recalled that Nwabali’s father died in November, a few hours after he was in action for the Super Eagles in the 1-1 draw against Benin Republic in the 2025 Nations Cup qualifiers clash.
The Chippa United goalkeeper took to his X account to announce the death of his mother on January 1st, describing 2025 as the worst year of his life.
He wrote on X: “Rip mom, worst year of my life already,” while adding tears, heartbreak emoji on New Year’s Day.
Nwabali had earlier posted “A very very crazy world indeed,” before announcing the heartbreaking news of his mother’s death in the next post.
The Nigeria Football Federation commiserated with Nwabali on their X account, and other Nigerians prayed for strength, and the fortitude to bear the loss for Nwabali and his family.
NFF wrote on X: “Our heartfelt condolences to Stanley Nwabali on the loss of his mother. Stay strong, Stanley. Sending you strength and support during this difficult time. You are not alone; we are all with you.”
Football fans have also taken to X to send condolences message to Nwabali.
Naija Footballers wrote on X: “Stanley Nwabali loses his mother just a few months after losing his father. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and the rest of his family during this difficult time”.
Duchess prayed for strength for Nwabali in this incredibly difficult time.
She wrote on X: “Losing two of the most important people in one’s life in such a short time is incredibly difficult. I pray for strength for him and his family. May the souls of the departed rest in peace.”
Official AGT urged Nwabali to stay strong, while assuring him of the support of Nigerians in this trying moment.
He wrote: “Dear Nwabali; In these tough and trying times, we want you to know that all Nigerians both home and abroad are behind you, and supporting you. Stay strong, knowing you made your mother so proud of you by your heroics for your father land.”
Philip Okpala wrote on X: “Sending heartfelt condolences to Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali on the loss of his beloved mother. May you find strength in the cherished memories you shared and comfort in knowing her legacy lives on. The entire football community stands with you.”
Nwabali has been a key member of the Super Eagles team since he stormed into limelight at the 2023 Nations Cup in Ivory Coast with impressive performances for the team.
He ended Nigeria’s search for a reliable goalkeeper with series of match-winning saves in the competition to help the Super Eagles to a silver medal finish in the tournament.
Nwabali went 493 minutes across six games without conceding a goal in the Nations Cup to hold the record for the longest clean sheets among Nigerian goalkeepers in the competition’s history.
