Manchester United are headed into a period of rebuild under new owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS team.
As such a squad reshuffle is expected and a lot of fresh faces joining the club.
Young Benfica midfielder Joao Neves has been heavily linked with The Red Devils for a while now and as Spanish publication El Nacional report, United may be a step closer to securing the youngster.
According to the report Neves’ agent Jorge Mendes had offered the youngster to Barcelona but with the financial turmoil the Catalan club is going through, there is a possibility they are unable to afford him and they turned down the offer which puts United in prime position.
The Primeira Liga club want at least a fee of £68million for their hightly-coveted youngster, a fee that Barca may be unable to match.
The Catalan publication reports that Mendes wants to take Neves to a powerful club and after Barcelona’s rejection, Manchester United remains the best option.
Neves is one of the most highly sought-after youngsters in the modern game and as a 6, he will always be on high demand.
Chelsea and Arsenal last season showed just how in demand defensive midfielders were as they broke the bank splashing upwards of 70 million pounds for both Romeo Lavia and Declan Rice in that order.
Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano confirmed Manchester United’s interest in the youngster as centredevils covered.
Neves is already causing waves all over Europe and at only 19, he has the world at his feet.
It will be interesting to see what happens in the summer as top European clubs scramble for his signature.
