CALABAR– The Student Union Government of the University of Calabar has placed an indefinite ban on Campus Shuttle due to hike in shuttle price.
According to a circular signed by the Director General, Media, HON. Edim Sabastine Ndifon, the ban was at the instant of the Union's president upon failure of the campus shuttle drivers to reverse the increased transportation fare on campus which was increased from N50 to N80 per drop.
The circular informed that the SUG president in company of the Director of Welfare and other union leaders embarked on a fruitless negotiation journey with the Campus Shuttle Drivers in a bid to reverse the sudden hike in transportation fare.
The meeting which lasted for hours ended in a stalemate with neither side willing to shift grounds as the Campus Shuttle Drivers were bent on the new price of N80 while the students leaders were not ready to see the fare increased even by 1N.
The circular reads in parts;
"After intensive negotiations between the Union and leaders of Welfare Department Of Campus Shuttle Drivers, the Students Union Government strongly and totally disagree that shuttle price on campus should be raise to N80 per drop.
Also the leaders of the Welfare Department Of campus Shuttle Drivers refused to agree with the Students Union Government that price should be N50 per drop due to the high cost of pump price in the nation.
…the Students Union Government has therefore place and indefinite ban of shuttle movements on campus until the Welfare Department Of Campus Driver agrees with the Students Union Government or until the pump price reduces."
The student president, Sen. Kichi-akwo Godgift used the same medium to appeal to fellow student to strictly adhere to the directive of the union leaders while appealing for their understanding as the directive will definitely come with some discomfort.
