Capcom just unveiled their latest DLC character set to join Street Fighter 6. Ed, the Psycho Powered boxer from Street Fighter 5, makes his grand return with an updated design and some slick new moves.
With the upcoming fighter’s full gameplay trailer having been released, fans were quick to notice that a good portion of Ed’s moves looked pretty darn familiar. This new comparison video from b_HAUNT shows that Ed’s move set appears to borrow fairly heavily from a certain Tekken boxer.
Steve Fox first made his debut back in Tekken 4 and has since been a part of several of the series’ playable rosters. He is the franchise’s resident boxer archetype, using fast footwork and powerful punches to subdue his opponents.
What’s interesting about Ed is that several of his maneuvers seem to borrow not just from Steve Fox, but from the Street Fighter X Tekken iteration of the character — which was developed by Capcom themselves.
The biggest similarity between the two fighters comes in the form of Ed’s Flicker attack. Ed’s kick buttons all now perform a swift ranged jab at different angles to control space and catch the opponent off guard.
This is very similar in animation and function to Steve’s Flicker jabs in Street Fighter x Tekken, where the boxer would also fire off ranged jabs at different angles. The EX version of Steve’s Flicker saw him hit three times and at different angles, and it even appears that Ed has a target combo in Street Fighter 6 that acts similarly.
There are a lot more parallels to see here as well, including the way both characters use their sway, their projectile, rapid punches, certain normal attacks, and even their ducking uppercuts.
