Street Fighter 6 managed to beat out the competition and win best fighting game at The Game Awards 2023 last week, but the Capcom representatives weren’t given a chance to take the stage for the acceptance.
That doesn’t mean the lead developers had nothing to say about their award and community support with IGN getting full statements from SF6 Director Takayuki Nakayama and Producer Shuhei Matsumoto on its reception and future.
The public faces of Street Fighter since 2020 are of course ver appreciative and thankful of the fan support as well as recognizing their competition like Mortal Kombat 1.
“I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the players and to the members of the development team who worked so hard to bring the next chapter of the Street Fighter series to life,” said Nakayama via IGN.
We will not be complacent and will continue to develop the game and provide the best experience possible to our fans. Thank you very much for your continued support.”
It is nice to hear out of their mouths that they hopefully will not let all of this good will and success go to their heads at Capcom even though there is some issues they still need to address in the game like DLC pricing.
“We will not be complacent and will continue to develop the game and provide the best experience possible to our fans” – Director Nakayama
We of course witnessed the long, and not always great journey that Street Fighter 5 had to take to get to where it ended up, but SF6 got to mostly skip straight to the good stuff — and hopefully it stays there.
“I was moved by the loud cheers in the theater when we won the award,” said Matsumoto. “I am filled with gratitude to the members of the development team who took on many challenges and to everyone who has played the game. We will continue to make Street Fighter 6 more exciting for players to enjoy, so please look forward to it!”
It’s not surprising to hear them talk about the next chapter of SF6 considering how long Street Fighter 5 was supported.
Once again, Thank you to all players!Obrigado a todos os jogadores! 모든 플레이어 여러분, 감사합니다! https://t.co/X13X4D3pXz

If it’s at the same level as the previous entry, we could be playing Street Fighter 6 with new content all the way to 2030, which is kinda crazy to think about since we’re only about six months in now.
Capcom is still set to release Ed and Akuma in early 2024 to close out the major Year One content for SF6, so there’s still more on the immediate horizon.
The team will likely announce what will be coming in that next chapter during the Capcom Cup X finals in February 2024.
Street Fighter 6 was up against the likes of Mortal Kombat 1, Pocket Bravery, Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl 2, and God of Rock.
Capcom’s flagship fighter was also nominated for best multiplayer and innovation in accessibility at The Game Awards 2023 though it didn’t win either of those.
You can find all of the winner statements from the developers who didn’t make it on the TGA stage on IGN.
