Which world warrior wins a real martial arts tournament?
Over just the past few years, Takayuki Nakayama and Shuhei Matsumoto have gone from relative unknowns to the public face of Street Fighter at Capcom, and they certainly still have a lot to say about Street Fighter 6.
Game Informer is continuing their special coverage of SF6 with a new video sitting down with Director Nakayama and Producer Matsumoto to answer 118 rapid fire questions about the upcoming game, characters, the franchise as a whole and beyond.
There’s obviously no time to go over every single question asked to the lead developers, but one of the first ones that caught our attention was also quite humorous being which world warrior would win a martial arts tournament in the real world (presumably without special powers).
Matsumoto quietly suggests Blanka, which makes sense since he still has claws and fangs even without his electricity, while Nakayama has to think for a second before landing on Guile.
Since this is basically a lightning round session, most of their responses are short and poignant although the director talked a decent bit about the hardest Street Fighter 5 character to cut for SF6.
“Personally, I wanted to get Cody in, especially because World Tour takes place in Metro City,” said Nakayama. “He’s an appealing character who matched the universe of the game, and we really wanted to get him in.”
There’s plenty of small interesting tidbits regarding SF6 like development apparently began in 2018, more classic games are planned for the Game Center, and confirmation that Ryu is not indeed in his 60’s — but it’s also nice to hear some of the more personal questions to get to know the “new” leadership better.
As for their favorite entries in the series, Nakayama specifically enjoys Street Fighter 2: Champion Edition the most while Matsumoto was a fan of Street Fighter Alpha 2.
Both developers apparently love the 1994 Street Fighter film starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, and they even talk about Street Fighter 2010: The Final Fight.
Nakayama won’t say who his favorite SF6 character is because they haven’t been officially shown yet, but Matsumoto appears to be wholly on the Kimberly train.
