But it all works out in the end this time it seems
After waiting seven years to finally get his Evo championship, FLY|Punk has been taking it pretty easy on the Street Fighter 6 tournaments for a while now.
He did, however, make it out to compete in DreamHack Atlanta 2024 this weekend where he was looking strong and also committed one of the most infamous faux pas you can do on the big stage.
Punk was still looking really strong with his solo Cammy, managing to make it all the way to winners final after defeating the likes of RFL|Kharsonist, former Capcom Cup champ XSET|iDom and others.
Here the reigning Evo winner would have to face another player who’s had a really good competitive year in TM|NoahTheProdigy where the deed would occur.
After going up 2-0, Punk would perfectly punish Luke’s Sand Blast with Cammy’s level 2 Super on wakeup where it looked to be game over.
As such, the veteran pro stood up to try and fistbump the opponent, but Luke survived.
Punk would try and quickly sit back down, but Noah would capitalize on the error and fire back with his own combo to level 2 to take the game and stay alive in the set.
You can see both players laughing with Punk holding his head while the commentators shout the infamous line, “What are you standing up for?”

This quote goes back to at least the classic Street Fighter 4 set between Ricki Ortiz and Wolfkrone, but it’d become one of the most famous moments in fighting game history with Woshige’s botch at Evo 2015 in Guilty Gear Xrd.
We even managed to see another “Woshige moment” at Combo Breaker 2024 just a handful of months ago, though that would have a more unfortunate ending than this time here.
Although he dropped the game, Punk would come back and clean up the set 3-1 where he’d have to face Noah again in grand finals and take the whole tournament in three straight games again.

This has been a pretty wild weekend for fighting game action overall considering we saw a traditional Mortal Kombat player in Ninjakilla212 take Tekken 8 at DreamHack as well as another Evo champ in RB|Arslan Ash getting upset in pools at Thaiger Uppercut 2024.
And then there was the whole controversy around Bandai Namco disqualifying a Chinese player at the event who managed to reach top 8 because of the Tekken World Tour rules.
Punk may have won it all in the end, but this just goes to show once again that you can never make any assumptions in this genre until the KO pops up on the screen.
Now you know why he’s standing up
