Having seen his side lose three of their first four games, Steven Gerrard came to the Emirates with little intention of playing football to get out of trouble.
Kicking lumps out of Arsenal on the night, Gerrard’s instructions to his side seemed clear.
Although Arsenal lost Martin Odegaard to one of Aston Villa’s ‘tackles’, they came away with all the points to maintain their 100% start to the season.
After the game, Gerrard was asked at his press conference if he had any concerns about getting the sack, especially after being booed in their previous game. “‘Of course I do,” Gerrard replied.
“I am being honest and critical of myself. I will do my job the best I can do. I will step forward and take responsibility as best I can.
“But if I stood here and said I wasn’t concerned you’d look at me as if I was from a different planet.”
Things are not set to get any easier for Villa.
Next up for them in the Premier League is a game against Manchester City and, of course, Erling Haaland, who has already scored nine goals in his first five Premier League games.
