According to New York State Police Officials, Trooper Thomas Mascia, 27, approached what he thought was a stalled vehicle parked along the left median of the Southern State Parkway near exit 17, at around 11:45 p.m. Wednesday evening.

As the Trooper approached to offer assistance to the vehicle driver, he was shot at and struck in the leg during an exchange of gunfire with the driver of a car in the westbound lanes of the parkway, officials said.

A Trooper who responded to the shooting incident rushed Mascia to Nassau University Medical Center by RMP where the injured member of service underwent surgery on his leg and was last listed in stable condition.

The suspected gunman took off from the wounded Trooper and fled westbound in a dark colored Dodge Charger with temporary New Jersey license plate.

According to police radio transmissions, license plate reader technology matched a charger on the Verrazzano Bridge with the same license plate.

No arrests at this time and the investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
